yes  even  Insomnium  already  working on their new album since august 2018. i've put big expectation if they're new album will released this year. yes both saor and rotting released 15 feb. i don't know is this true or not. but fenriz said on his facebook fanpage next darkthrone album will be primitive and raw black metal sounding again

Well, I'll be interested in checking the Darkthrone album out if that's the case. Although history shows us that when bands make claims about the next album's sound they're almost always fraudulent. Hopefully it's something that appeals to me, if not, no big deal.

Wormed just posted an update on their FB page that says "New Recording Finished":

Season of Mist seem to have all the bands at the minute.  I only seem to play Wormed when the release comes out, I rarely go back to their releases with any regularity but I always enjoy it when I do.

Here's the latest Contrarian promo track. I don't know if this link will work, since it's from an exclusive premiere on Heavy Blog, but this sounds really cool to me -- building on the late 90s progressive DM vibes they established on the last album, strongly recalling Death in spots. Great melodies, cool ideas, featuring George Kollias on drums and vocals.

So, Abbath sophomore due in July, entitled “Outstrider” album teaser up on YouTube (all 26 seconds of it).

New EP due from Lvcifyre, “Sacrament” is ‘due soon’ (thanks Dark Descent Records for that unwavering level of detail) after a 5 year gap from the band.  Track up on YouTube also (yep, too lazy to link), sounds reasonable enough.

Darkthrone

Can't wait for these. And Memoriam. And (hopefully) new albums from Tool and Faith No More.

Sentient Horror have a new one coming too, I really like their debut.

A few of my favourites of 2019 so far:

None - Damp Chill Of Life
Kever - Primordial Offerings
Zohamah - Spread My Ashes

New album of Dark Throne "Old Star" will be released 31 st May this year. Anyone is hyped for this one?

Not at all.

The new material sounds as bland and paint-by-numbers as most of their stuff from the last twenty years. They used to be innovators and frontrunners, but most of their career they’ve been content to be a tribute band to 80s metal, basically. Fenriz doesn’t even try to hide that fact. He just wants to ape the bands he loved back in the day. And that’s fine, but it leaves me flat (and also confused at their continued cult status).

I also have a problem with their riff quality control - as in there doesn’t seem to be any. Any riff they seem to come up with over the recording weekend seems to make it on the albums. Some of them are dire.

I’ll forever love the first six Darkthrone albums, but I can’t find a lot that moves me on the rest of them - Old Star’ pre-release track included.

New Mgła album "coming soon"!  @Requiem

Yeah, this is going to be interesting. I still haven't heard the above track because the time hasn't been right and I'm not ready. I might actually wait until the album is released and purchased before I start dipping into it. Death to the internet.

It's going to be impossible to live up to 'Exercises in Futility' so I'm just going to look for things I can enjoy in it and not be disappointed. Hopefully it's a cool album.

The song was good, and pretty catchy.  I have high hopes for the album, but am prepared for a knockoff of Exercises in Futility.

I broke and listened to the song.

Yep, very much like 'Exercises'. It might just be the youtube sound, but the cymbals and high-hats were so damn loud in the mix, they were a bit distracting. I hope it doesn't feel that way on the CD. Loved the riffs and melodies though.

Vastum will release Orificial Purge on 25th October.  Current track that is available for streaming ticks all the right boxes for sure.  Straight up sadistic Death Metal, what's not to like?  Seems a short release with only six tracks on offer but the quality in the line up (members of Acephalix, Necrot and Ulthar make up the band) will hopefully deliver a killer full length number four.

Fen will be releasing The Dead Light on December 6th. They claim to have cut down on song length this time around. I loved Winter, but it felt long-winded at times... interested to see what they came up with.

Also, @True Belief brought this to my attention a little while ago - I'm really looking forward to the upcoming Obsequiae album, due on November 22nd. Promo track sounds great:

A new Reptile Womb album, Grizzly Fetish ep, and Paysage d' Hiver album are all slated for release in December!

Did they ink a deal and now they’re slated for release? I’m sure there’ll be parchment written about them.

What do you mean?  All are being released by different labels (and I think the Grizzly Fetish is self-released).

Also, apparently the new Paysage d'Hiver will be played in full in Switzerland for an event marking its release.  It would be really cool to go and meet the man behind this project (and an awesome label too)!

Sorry, I was too subtle.

You said they were "slated" for release and I just thought that was a funny expression. Also, when people write that such-and-such have "inked a deal" it's a strange thing to say. I was just rapping on that theme. Totally off topic and unhelpful, but there you go.

'Slated' does sound like an odd word choice in retrospect! Sorry, I can be a little obtuse/literal in online conversation.

  • Our picks

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
