I hope you have success in the path you have chosen. :)

I´ve had my struggles with diet changes, dropping caffeine and nicotine and such. I have since determined, that my happiness surely doesn´t come through suffering, thats the path most people try to take to achieve something better. Currently i eat pretty much anything, but reasonable amounts and with enough variety. I am much happier (and feel better too) than i did ie. when trying gluten free or vegatarian diets (not to mention everything from visiting the store to cooking was an intolerable chore). It´s surely a worthy cause to try to drop the things you grow addiction to, and i still wish to drop nicotine.. It´s just tough, really tough. We are all unique (far less so than many wish to believe though) and different things work for different people, some people seem to love the effort it takes to follow a strict diet. :D

My main problem is I've gotten a bit lazy in cooking of late. Easily remedied to be honest.

Not gonna lie. Did not even know how to cook more than using a microwave or heating up Ramen til I went vegan. Totally understand. Nobody taught me how to cook growing up.

Regardless of what I tend to eat I wish i could get my self to eat about half as much of it as I tend to. I like coffee but don't imagine it does me much good, especially that second cup. I feel like a chump when I get a headache on a day when I've had none (with enough water I can avoid that, but it takes an effort).

Meat is definitely murder, I've shot enough pigs in the head to know that for sure. Veganism is square one if you want to dial back on the monstrosity factor of being human (actually... getting off of fossil fuel is a bigger deal than that but who is planning to do that?), but I'm relatively comfortable with my monstrous meat consumption. One final thought... I'd hate to be in the position of controlling the food habits of a recalcitrant MoFo like BAN when I can't even get myself eating as I'd like to.

How many pigs have you shot in the head, and in what context did these killings take place?

  • 1 month later...

I kicked caffeine about 6 years ago due to constant migraine and cluster headaches. Took a good month to feel normal and have good sleep patterns but was one of the best things I have ever done, even my skin was better due to no caffeine.

It is obviously hard to avoid completely but in the most part it can be avoided.

Well I know where I'm going for my weekly goat sacrifices from now on lol. In all seriousness I won't be giving up caffeine. I like coffee way too much, and decaf is wholy unappealing.

I have only decaf, taste is no different.

Long term side effects of caffeine would be enough to make me cut it out even if I didn't suffer with headaches because of it. People seem to forget it is a psychoactive drug and has long term use issues. But each to their own and all that!

What "long term use issues" would those be? Headaches from caffeine withdrawal are well documented, but that's the extent of what I've seen on the subject.

Headaches from withdrawal should tell you that your body is dependent and the change in the chemicals in the body have caused a form of shock, hence the withdrawal. Long term side effects include, depression, anxiety. Raised blood pressure, higher rate of cardiac arrests in long term coffee users. Indigestion, Gout. List goes on.

I am not preaching at all, just responding, I could not care less on peoples coffee habits. I smoke so I cant give anyone advice on addiction and abusing the body. Just my personal experience with caffeine is not good.

According to the so-called experts everything we do and consume is bad for us. I feel healthy and don't see the harm in two or three coffees a day. To be fair though It's summer right now and I think I've had one cuppa in two months.

Life is short, why not enjoy the things you like? That's my attitude these days.

Im trying this again. This time im being a little bit smarter about it and weening off. Stepping down from energy drinks to coffee. In time we will transition into Green Tea.

Good for you! It's rough, but I was able to make the transition as well. I reward myself sometimes, but I've had barely any caffeine the past 2 months.

Even just quitting energy drinks puts you in a better place. Adrenal fatigue is a bitch.

Fuck yeah it is. The coffee feels almost as though its doing nothing (i was a 3 or 4 monster a day kind of guy).

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
