2017 Top Tens

Ok, well maybe you noobs can include albums you haven’t purchased. For instance, I don’t own God Dethroned but it’s in my list.

Otherwise the lists are going to be me, Deathy, Macabre’s Final Countdown, and @Will‘s favourite Muslim release by “Halal Maw”, who I presume used to be called Hadal Maw before their Cat Stevens-like conversion to Islam.

Dammit, I remember writing this on my phone, so once again I'm staunchly and angrily blaming auto-correct.

MacabreEternal’s Top Ten Albums of 2017

10. Body Count “Bloodlust”

It seems the world needs the message of Body Count to be heard louder than it ever was audible back in the 1990’s.  Gritty, with politically and racially motivated lyrics and song titles galore on one of the most aggressive releases of 2017.  Yes, for all it’s relevance there’s a thankfully less than equal amount of plain immature, cock wielding arrogance that fits even worse than it did at times twenty years ago.  Ernie C’s riffs and playing in general are improved with age though and the collaborations with Mustaine and Cavalera come off respectfully enough.  The piss poor attempt at covering Slayer should be expunged from history altogether though.

Of the two songs I've heard (the Slayer cover and "No Lives Matter") I preferred the Slayer cover although I didn't really care for the way the vocals were done.

Guess I'll check out some other tracks. Any you would recommend?

Black Hoodie, All Love is Lost, Ski Mask Way are all good tracks.

MacabreEternal‘s one post has already generated more discussion than my full list, you ‘orrible lot.
Earlier today I checked out ‘Black Hoodie’ and I really liked it. That’s a really happening track. I wasn’t expecting a great deal but gosh it’s good.
Sorry, I haven't heard any of the albums that you posted to be able to discuss them. We did discuss a certain omission that led down quite the tangential path though... [emoji39]

MacabreEternal’s Top Ten Albums 2017

9. Cannibal Corpse “Red Before Black”

To the probable eternal bane of the lives of most underground metal heads the consistency levels of CC reach all the way to 2017.  As explained in the blog review I did for the forum, whether you consider that consistency to be a source of “safety” or just further evidence of their evergreen mainstream appeal nowadays is matter for debate on thousands of blog, YouTube comments and social media arguments.

The fact is that whilst reinventing zero wheels, “Red Before Black” leaves me feeling thoroughly entertained after every listen.  Meat and potatoes death metal it may be, but there’s almost an arrogance to the confidence in which CC continue to churn out unapologetically simple death metal.  This record makes my neck hurt.

There are some cool moments sprinkled throughout those. Not my favorite thing but certainly fun.

I've only even heard of 3 of these. Can you give some background on the others?

MacabreEternal's Top Ten Albums 2017

8. Chelsea Wolfe "Hiss Spun"

Dancing like some spasmodic demon out of a million horror films through a landscape of hazy, grungey, alt-rocky, industrial clattery places of interest, "Hiss Spun" weaves a wonderful and memorable experience into the mind of the listener.  Sure, it is not an album that gets played everyday but it makes regular enough passage through my speakers to land slot number eight in my top ten of this year.  Emotional it is - although not in a soppy way, more in a stabby ex-girlfriend on crack kind of scenario - it never grates nor becomes overwhelming.  It is edgy, unpredictable and more than a little dangerous.  Just how I like my women!

Devangelic is a brutal death metal band from Italy with a style similar to Disgorge(USA)

Desecrate The Faith is a death metal band from my hometown of Houston, TX my band plays shows with them frequently and they are a really good band. Similar to old Suffocation but with some new school influence

Condemned is another Disgorge style band from San Diego CA but add some dark melodic overtones to their sound. All of their albums are good.

Logic of Denial is a death metal band from Italy and their new album Aftermath is just brilliant. Chaotic riffing and numerous changes throughout each song. Takes a few listens to digest.

Posthuman Abomination is a new brutal death metal band from Italy and I got their 2 song promo with an order I placed from comatose music and I was thoroughly impressed after the first listen.

Hour of Penance and Hideous Divinity are both death metal bands from Italy that have a Florida death metal sound but on steroids lol.

Ah, that makes sense. I don't get into a lot of brutal death metal, so that makes sense as to why I haven't heard of most of those.

I see. I like a lot of different styles of metal but as you can see death metal and black metal are my two favorite.

Those are my favorite genres as well, along with doom and thrash metal, but most brutal death metal sounds samey and dull to my ears. I can get into the more original sounding stuff like Lykathea Aflame, Wormed, and Mithras, but I would rather listen to Suffocation than a bunch of bands playing their sound through an even more narrow filter. That's just me though, I know not everyone shares this sentiment.

Death metal is my most-listened-to genre as well, but a lot of newer brutal death leaves me pretty cold. I dig the bands that spice it up a bit, like Wormed and Unfathomable Ruination. I've found myself getting into a good bit of recent tech DM, which surprises me since I don't tend to go for widdly shit and sterile production, but my favorites tend to be of the progressive/dissonant/blackened varieties, and the 90s continue to be a goldmine.

Wormed and UR are both excellent. Exodromos is a great album. For me the late 90s and early 00s had some of my favorite DM albums. Immolation, Hate Eternal, Morbid Angel, Nile etc.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
