Underrated-but-great oldskool death metal

Seance - Fornever Laid to Rest (1992)

I've got a couple of old, classic demos to throw in too:

Prime Evil - The Manifestation (1988)

Some great death/thrash. There's a couple of compilation albums out that this is on.

Necrovore - Divus De Mortuus (1987)

Rough sound quality, but furious sounding shit. Absolute classic DM.

One of the earliest tech-death albums, and yet somehow one of the least appreciated considering its influence. What a way to shit all over their legacy, their later albums are awful.

That's a good point; the heap of their later output that it's buried under probably leads people to assume it's more of the same. 'Hallucinations' is a great album and a piece of history.

It definitely fell through the cracks for me, I hadn't listened to it until you posted it here. Thanks for sharing.

Don't sleep on Todessehnsucht either. Gorguts credit Atrocity as their inspiration for exploring stranger territory in death metal, but their contributions seem to be mostly forgotten these days.

so here's my newcomer faveourite band's

1. AtomWinter

if you're fan of bolt thrower,or swedish old school band's like entombed, dismember.try this band. it's like crossover sounding between European/american death metal scene with Swedish Death metal.solid riff with buzzaw guitar tone, and  The vocals on display here are a very sickening and throaty sort of howl.such great newcomer band

2.Blaspherian

it's very dissonant sounding,heavy/brutal music, with lot chromatic riffing style and very evil & blasphemous lyrical themes .if youre fans of Immolation, incantatiom,Dead Congregation this band are fit with you.

Deiquisitor

Deiquisitor came from Denmark. another Immolation sound's wankery.but they've bring more chaotic and dissonant sound.and their vocal style are really like inhuman voice.such overwhelming band which came on unpredictable country

A lot of the newer "OSDM" that I've heard leaves me cold, but there are a good few bands that get it right for my taste -- Funebrarum, Disma, Dead Congregation, Cruciamentum, Krypts, Ritual Chamber -- as well as some other groups that combine modern ideas with old-school sound and attitude, like Grave Miasma, Suffering Hour, Golgothan Remains, Ulthar, and Blood Incantation.

Might wind up merging this with our existing old-school thread, since it was headed towards newer offerings last I remember.

First here's some to me really original sounding groove death metal that leaned more to the experimental side. First 2 links. Then I gotta post some thrash/death.

And by the way that Necrovore demo is the titties. I'm pretty sure I jizzed in my pants the first time I heard it.

Afflicted - This band is weird, they've got some almost middle eastern sounding acoustic parts that I love and they are just different. More groove oriented death metal from 92. Their next album is power metal, a shame we didn't get a follow up to this.

Mercyless (France)- This is not the Swedish thrash/death band Merciless, different spelling. This is some to me really original sounding groove death from 93. The Swedish band is good too but this so much more obscure. I just can't get over the mannequin head coming out of the va-jayjay on the cover.

Believer

One of the most original, weird and extreme death thrash bands ever. Also they went against the grain with religious lyrics etc. They got too weird and proggy for me after this album but this one here is a masterpiece. It has a kind of annoying intro to the song but don't worry it gets to the heavy and doesn't disappoint.

Massacra

France's best thrash/death band. They had a few classic albums. The follow up to this is great too.

Master

Every band with Paul Speckmann rules. Abomination, Deathsrike and many more but this 1 takes the taco. A real cult band that has a diehard following. Master has over 10 albums and all of them rule, including the new one.

Hexx

This band started off power ten they did thrash and here really groovy death metal. This is the cheesiest band iI posted but I love this album. It starts with a classical piano intro and then the riff kicks in to hyperspeed and you know what you're in for. An instrumental death metal cover of the Spiderman theme song on this album too.

Hellwitch

Weird, almost proggy thrash death that just pummels. This album hits you like a brick in the face.

Sadistic Intent

The best death metal band to ever come out of LA. A truly cult band that doesn't get enough respect. Dark, raw and heavy. They stand apart from the pack.

Morthra

Another really obscure one I found a few years ago. This is really a gem. I wouldn't really call it doom/death but it has a few of those kind of parts. Old school Swedish death metal.

Megaslaughter

Another Swedish classic. This is really heavy and crushing. Pretty much straight forward death metal but done really well. I found out about them on a blog years ago.

Cruciform

From Australia back in 93 really doomy in parts yet straight forward death metal. A friend from Australia recommended this to me years ago. I knew he had good taste because he digs Excoriate. his recommendation didn't disappoint.

Pentacle

Vicious sounding vocals and gnarly riffs. From the Netherlands. Very strong early Celtic Frost influence. This came out kind of late in 96 but it's classic osdm for sure. Very raw. Kind of gallopy at points. I found out about them because they are friends with the Sadistic Intent guys. They were talking about them and I said I never heard of them, they said you gotta check em out. They got me into Dead Congregation too. This sounds like "old skull death metal" the really raw and dark stuff inspired by CF and Hellhammer. It's got that kind of guitar tone and simple yet crushing riffs.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
