What Metal Band Describes You Best?

When I saw the thread title I thought, wow that's an interesting idea for a thread. What band would I say really reflects who I think and feel that I am as a person? What style, atmosphere, level of technicality, level of aggression, is emblematic of me and my perspectives on the world around me? 

Then I see that this is another one of those mysterious and somewhat sinister first posts that proliferate these forums. A sure sign that it's click bait or worse. 

I'm going to call the OP's bluff, however, and answer this question properly (I'll refrain from doing the quiz or whatever tomfoolery the link might bring).  

While I'm not going to be as myopic as to claim that anyone, including myself, can be summed up by a band or two, or that the complexity of human existence can be condensed into a musical expression, I am going to suggest that there are elements of myself in the music of both Katatonia and Septicflesh. 

Here's some self-analysis: 

Katatonia: I have a penchant for the melancholic and sombre. I'm romantic at times and sometimes reflect nostalgically on lost/past loves. I'm not overly intense yet I think I hit some natural highs, like a decent chorus. I have regrets, especially as I'm getting older, although they aren't desperate but rather nostalgic for the good old times. I appreciate dark atmospheres and feel at peace in darkness and in solitude. I can sometimes shun crowds and love being by myself. I love poetry and the atmosphere of words.

Septicflesh: I love bombast and larger than life concepts, be they astronomy, art, music, literature. I'm a huge history buff, especially of the classical world and its mythologies. I've travelled to exotic and mysterious places. I love the grandeur of classical music and it reflects my view of the world, as something to be cherished and experienced. I feel a lot of wonder and awe at things. Lovecraft is one of my favourite writers. I have an increasing respect for the numinous. 

What do you make of that, internet Freuds?

I got AC/DC. I'm okay with this because I enjoy AC/DC, unlike most of the other options. 

 

However, I didn't like most of the questions and answers. I don't mean to offend, but the quiz read like it had been made by a teenager.

 

If I had to choose a spirit-metal band, not counting the band I'm named after who are probably more punk anyway, I might go with Ministry. I've always found Ministry's music weirdly empowering. It's like saying you're an outsider but you're going to kick ass anyway. In a way, Ministry has the same "beautiful freak" dynamic that Ziggy Stardust does... like they're freaks, and they're amazing, which can be inspiring.

I have to admit, I'm a sucker for online quizzes. I think some small part of me thinks if I take a quiz and find out what cat breed I am, for example, I'll potentially discover some great truth about myself and reality.

 

A word of advice: Quizony may be the best quiz site.

If I was forced to choose, I'd have to say Queensryche: a penchant for dumb outfits, derivative and self-important beginnings that nonetheless showed a lot of promise, a brief period of flowering, years of dissolving further and further into confusion and irrelevance while the world moved on, long dry spells punctuated by internal strife and increasingly rare forays into creativity, desperate attempts to relive glory days, and the gradual realization that I'll have to hire a new frontman because I can't hit all the notes anymore... Yeah baby. I need more sleep.

While that is all slightly depressing, I'm just glad that someone had a go at it! Comparing your own life's path to a band's - that's a pretty cool idea.

That's OK, on good days I'm hoping I'm more like Gorguts, and my years of dormancy will ultimately bear fruit! :D

Okay, I'll bite.  Well sort of.  I wish I could say I had the youth of Metallica.  Evolving relatively quickly and finding my feet into manhood with a surety and prowess that culminated in my own "And Justice For All" as I reached full maturity.  Sadly, if anything my life from late teens to young manhood was probably better exemplified by the same bands 90's onwards output.  Starting off with an unexpected change of direction leading to a prolonged period of patchy and largely poor output causing disenchantment with long standing fans  and more than a little denial from myself that I was not trying to be something I was not.   Thankfully though I did come round to the facts - unlike Metallica - so there the comparison ends.

You are KoRn! You are one hell of a weird person, and strange is your middle name, but you're very in tune with other people's feelings. Sometimes the demon inside you makes you a person you are not, so you hurt others unintentionally. You do things without thinking, and it can get you in trouble. You pick up a lot of heavy stuff throughout your life, and can easily get confused on which paths to take. Remember that your heart is always the leader, not your brain. You love deeply and care about others, and you won't let society change you. You want to let people know it's okay to be different. So even though challenges seem to defeat you easily, people still love your crazy ass for everything you are.

This is me apparently. 

You are Slipknot! Who are people to tell you who you are? You are nothing but your crazy ass self! You are somebody who expresses yourself freely, no matter what others think and no matter how weird you look. You express yourself through your art and/or music because people don't easily get you. It's not that you are mean to others, some just don't realize what they're missing out on. You're very passionate towards people, but sometimes they turn their back on you. You get angered easily by this, so you find a muse to let it all out. You're hard to understand, but you use that to your advantage. Music and any art form is your way to communicate yourself through society. You find the people in your life who love you for who you are, and you couldn't have asked for anything better. So use your individuality to your advantage and keep being you!

    • Sacred Reich "Awakening"

      Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

      Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.


      There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

      Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Overkill "The Wings of War"

      Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

      The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.  


      There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
