Metalcore

That's one of the reasons I can't listen to metalcore' date=' I just hate whole emo scene. I have a few friends that tried to get me into asking alexandria and the more they showed me their music I just hated it.[/quote'] I'm a fan of proper emo music, as in the 90's alternative rock sound of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, and some of the earlier post-hardcore/screamo bands. Modern supposed emo music is generally pretty dire, though, and has a lot more in common with the gutless, wet, bland limp-wristed pile of wank known as pop punk imo.

Re: Why doesn't Metalcore have it's own section

Metal core' date=' while having metal elements, just doesn't have enough metal in it to be classified as a form of metal. (And it sucks.)[/quote'] In the cases of pop metalcore, you are correct, and that was how I felt until I heard better stuff. f5q3YlRoetQ Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

Re: Why doesn't Metalcore have it's own section

That sounded more like black metal mixed with punk. However' date=' I have to admit I would much rather listen to this than any of the other metalcore I've ever heard.[/quote'] Based on the baphomet on the cover, I would guess they have been informed by black metal (the tremolo section didn't hurt either), but are mostly a thrash/hardcore hybrid with some grind elements, aka metalcore. They're my favorite, but they're not alone, their sound was heavily based on Cro-Mags to my ears, a band I really dig (at least the album I've heard, The Age of Quarrel), but don't own anything from yet. Up until now I've completely disregarded metalcore as a legitimate genre of metal. I must say though listening to some of the aforementioned bands I seem be drawn towards it (at least what now obviously seems to be the "true" metalcore and the, for lack a better word, poser shit that is considered metalcore nowadays). Point is perspective and some extensive knowledge of the genre are required to make an informed decision on whether or not to like the genre as a whole and now I would like to say while previously hating metalcore with a passion I now retract my feelings on the matter and must say that the bands Ive heard suggested and discussed about in this thread are actually quite good. The ones that stand out for me in particular are Axe to Fall ablum by Converge and the song by Dillinger Escape Plan that BAN suggested. I must say the right information can definitely help when searching for good bands in a fucked up genre. Well that's it people I'm off again to truck the US. I might be able to post something later on this week but no promises. As always keep it metal.

Likewise Kishor, and it was going well until I realized that because of our merger with Swift that for some reason I am unable to fuel. So no I sit here waiting for my dispatch to fix this along with the 1000's of other problem that have arisen due to the changes in our dispatch communication system. It's actually gotten so bad that the phones lines to my dispatches office in Fontana CA are down. Of course this is all happening while I'm loaded and on a deadline. I need to be in Denver by tomorrow at 6am and im sitting in Snowville Utah. It's about a 11 hour drive so I do have some time to spare but I would prefer not to push my luck considering the weather has been shit as of late. I had chain up to go through Oregon just the other day and now I have to go through Wyoming and Colorado both of which have far worse weather. Yet here I sit waiting for this bullshit to end so I get moving again. Other than this current problem I've actually been quite good though, went and spent $1300 in 2 days about a week ago and I made $900 back the following week when I went back to work. And I'll make sure to check them out BAN. Any particular songs or albums you might recommend?

I've never heard of Snowville, UT, I'll have to look up where that's at. I would suggest dodging Wyoming whenever possible though, the drive to Denver is much nicer and seems to suffer less weather delays taking I-70 as opposed to I-80, but you can't use that route to get to Denver if you're hauling hazmat stuff. It's easier on your truck too, less hills and wind that way. Are you still with Central Refrigerated? I didn't know they had merged with Swift. As far as Ringworm goes, I like everything I've heard from them, but I only have The Promise and Justice Replaced By Revenge. Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

I might have to listen to these to change my view on metalcore.
There's some good stuff out there, but IMO the good bands are of a different species than the "melodic metalcore" we all love to hate. They're coming from a different place. That whole popular melodic metal style is pretty rotten to me. I even have a hard time listening to some of my old favorites like At The Gates and Dark Tranquillity because of it. Actually I'm kind of glad there's a thread for this stuff, even if it's of trollish origin.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
