What are you drinking?

That's cruel and unusual. An EGD as we call it is pretty miserable. When I used to do sedation for those procedures, I was always a little heavy handed on the "forgetful juice". It was always the one procedure I never wanted to have myself. For my procedure yesterday (which was all clear btw), I had propofol (aka Milk of Amnesia, the shit that killed Michael Jackson). It's pretty great stuff. Just lights out until it's all over. I had heard over the years that there were places in Europe that didn't use any sort of sedation for gastroscopy or colonoscopies. I can't understand why. Sedation is safe and effective when provided in a monitored environment and makes the whole thing much less unpleasant.

Wait, you get sedation for *scopies? I've had gastroscopy, colonoscopy, Sigmoideoscopy, at the most I've gotten some paracetamol and something that was supposed to calm me down, but did shit. Some colonoscopies were fine, but some hurt like a motherfucker, especially when they inflated the colon with air. Ugh.

Anyway, glad to hear they didn't find anything significant Navy.

That's crazy. Can't imagine doing any of those procedures fully awake.

Portello which according to wiki is a carbonated grape and berry flavoured soft drink. I'd have never picked it as that, but I don't care I've been drinking it on and off since I was a kid. Although it's available in bulk packs from the supermarket it's not available at every take out place any more so I don't drink it too often but I had Subway for lunch so a sugary drink complimented the diet!

Eeewwww I remember that gross fucking powdered milk my mum used to buy when we were kids. How the fuck that even passed the test to be called milk was beyond me and it hasn't improved. (I say that now knowing that the majority of milk produced by my fellow farmers in this country goes to make powdered milk products so therefore it is at least in part milk.)

Watered down milk still tastes better than the dregs at the bottom of the tank, or creek water after a lot of rain up in the hills. But sometimes we have to play the hand we are dealt.

Is no coffee directly related to covid or just because you didn't feel like eating or drinking in general?

Around here after about 24 hours everyone got their appetites back and for the week my wife was home I found out just how much coffee she drinks while she's at work. I was sure there was a hole in the bottom of the coffee tin for that week.

Yeah my symptoms were completely different to what everyone else in the house experienced when they caught Covid, and I was the only one who had the fever for a start. I’m sure I would have been a nightmare to be around being unable to drink my coffee but fortunately for everyone else my space is separate from the rest of the house. Now I’m just waiting for the text to come through granting me permission to finally leave the house again, cabin fever is definitely setting in.

I don't even know if the wife and child even measured their temps. I know they had bad head aches for the first 24-36 hours but I don't remember anyone going for the thermometer or mentioning a high temp.

You need permission? In Vic we don't even need a negative test, it's just out after seven. Mostly because they've also realised that many people can still show positive after 7 days but not be contagious. I thought my wife would need some kind of proof she had covid for work (gov. depart) but she didn't even need that.

Yeah yeah quarantine doesn’t end until 11:59 pm on the day you get your text from SA health to say your isolation period what is up. Darren might that might not necessarily be seven days after you return the positive test it could be 10 days because of issues with the system which me and your report isn’t always processed on the day that you actually let them know you’ve tested positive we are very backwards in South Australia when it comes to this

I couldn't have coffee for a couple months after Covid. I couldn't really taste it and it made me feel weird. I guess I went through caffeine withdrawal while I was sick enough not to notice, and I could have kicked the habit then, but life is better with coffee.

Between coffee and black metal I don't know which one I would begrudingly agree to give up gun to head. They're both essential. I've just finished my "morning" coffee here at 2pm after an epic game of Uno with the kid and yeah I don't think I'd want to live my life without coffee.

Two of my best friends are not coffee drinkers at all and that perplexes me when I stop and think about it. One dude drinks a lot of Coke (he usually buys Pepsi or the cheaper RC Cola brand actually) which I can't stand, and the other one drinks sweet tea and/or Red Bulls. I could drink a sweet tea if I had to on a hot day but I haven't ever even tried a Red Bull which people seem to think is strange. No idea how they make it through life without coffee.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
