What are you drinking?

When it's available, CBS is a bit over $30 a 4-pack here. My brother told me he knew of people buying it up and selling 4-packs for $100 at one point. KBS is around $25, haven't seen any of the other varieties.

I love coffee but I don't love it in stouts most of the time. Sweetness usually ruins coffee for me. My favorite coffee beer was a lager they had at some brewpub I used to like when I lived in Brooklyn. Clean, easy-drinking golden beer that tasted like a cup of cold brew. I don't know how they did it but the balance of flavors was just perfect.

CBS for $30 sounds about right for my area as well...I still remember one year I saw a place selling Goose Island BCBS in 4 packs, which I'd never seen before, and that shit was like $40. Regretted it, especially as it was still pretty hard to find at that time, but had to pass. Now days you can usually find it fairly easy in bomber sizes for about $12

Still not sure what's up with CBS...they made an announcement that 2019 would be the last year it was brewed, but I'm still seeing people reviewing it even now. Not sure if the price point + lock down made it a shelf-turd for three years or if they backtracked and made more

I bought a bunch of CBS last summer, found a couple of 4-packs and then I saw it in those big bottles for $20 each so grabbed like 4 of them. Which was probably too much to pay because those big bottles only hold like 2 normal sized bottles worth, but I thought they'd stopped making it so it was my last chance. And more importantly what's done is done.

The stuff I have is from 2019. Maybe the stores have been hanging on to it and doling it out here and there. Also heard that it got pulled from some shelves around then after a controversy with the company, so maybe that's part of the reason they still have stock laying around?

$20 bucks for the 750ml was a bargain...those were closer to $30 when it first came back out.

Just looking around a bit on some beer forums, general consensus seems to be that it was discontinued in 2019. Seems like Founders couldn't come to an agreement with the company they got the barrels from so it went on hold. The reason it's still popping up is apparently the 2017 batch sold really well because it had been discontinued for something like six or seven years. When distributors ordered heavy on it in 2018 and 2019, it didn't move nearly as well so there's a lot of backstock sitting around

I wouldn't mind some of that coffee Ziltoid came searching for.

I don't even know what brand I'm drinking right now because the wife made it.

Likewise, as for brands I’m half-enjoying the Nespresso pods, I’d rather roast and grind my own coffee but thus far nothing I’ve looked at is particularly friendly to the vision impaired.

It's only 20 degrees here but humidity is up around the 80% mark and I've just been out with the pressure washer cleaning down the patio of dried brick dust after cutting down some water features the other day. I don't think I could drink something hot if I tried. Thankfully 10am and now the sun is over the yard arm (I'm sure it is!)

We've had a shitty summer with humidity here in Vic. It wasn't as bad as a few years ago where the floor tiles in the house sweated for three days, but it has been really shitty.

If I was in need of a caffeine hit now I'd probably go for an iced coffee.

Been a mostly cool summer here, much needed since it’s helped us get most of the way through bushfire season without serious fires.

We were suppose to dock at Kangaroo Is. two days after the bushfires started there in 2020. That time of year we are often down at Mallacoota fishing but they had it just as bad at the same time.

I was thinking of going to those shake things when I started to get serious on the bike every morning, but in the end I decided I'd follow a different path.

My wife used to use the protein powders, there is still some here somewhere, I probably would consider them more if their prices were more reasonable. But this time around I've decided to listen to my niece who is a sports psychologist and dietician and rather than use powders and meal substitutes to 'lose weight' I'm actually watching what I eat better without being fanatical about it.

I just got home from my 35k ride, I've watered the garden and now I'm sitting here drinking a bottle of water and it's still not 7am yet. Nearly time for a coffee and breakfast though.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
