Your top 10 metal songs

I am trying to understand other's opinion so I want to ask you which factors, or what should I call it, are the most important for a song? For me song has to have lyrics which will completly introduce you to the mind of it's creator, his vision of things and that staff. And there is music. For me songs that have endless repeating riffs or small changes in composition are boring and I consider it's creator as not that creative or talentes as I like. I really don't like dirty voices full of rage like Panthera of voices that represents Death and similar genres. Here is my top 10:

10. Sabbra Cadabra by Black Sabbath

I love intro which tells you that something awesone is about to happen and as a fan of tenor voices in metal I even more like vocals in this song. This is love song btw

9. Powerslave by Iron Maiden

Song is about Pharaoh realizing that he is not God and that he will die soon. I think that everything about this song is exellent: lyrics, riffs, drums, bass and solo is just wow. Solo starts with slow building melody that later explodes and brings cool guitar and bass parts.

8. Revelation by Ozzy Osbourne

This masterpiece has everything that song must have if you ask me. It starts like a ballad for wounded planet Earth which is burning in greed of brainless people. Text says it all. Like a Powerslave, at one moment it will show Randy's rage as he shreds through masterpiece of a solo. I simply love this song.

7. Alexander the Great By Iron Maiden

Closer track from one of my favorite Maiden albums-Somewhere in time and first song I have ever heard of them at age of 6. Text is not complex at all, it's just history telling of life of Alexander, rising conqueror. What really buys me is music. This song is fucking opera!! This guys know to how to compose the song. Melody builds slowly and you can sense that it won't stay like that!! And battle of solos is provement of that. I recon Alexander solo as one of finest Smith solos. Just epic.

6. Metropolis pt. 1 by Dream Theater

I don't quite understand lyrics of song but this masterpiece of prog royalty has music that tells story I understand. Exept fenonenal composition featuring one of greatest instrumentalists for me, this song has incredible vocal parts by James LaBrie before voice catastrophe. Just fucking listen to this song!!

5. Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden

Lyrics of this song are inspired by novel of same name and this song is closer of Powerslave album, album that for me set Maiden at the top of genre. Song is 13 minutes long and it is Maiden's second longest song. I don't want to repeat myself, everything I said for previous Maiden classics is same like here so conclusion is it's epic. Period.

4. Hallowed Be Thy Name by Iron Maiden

Song tells a story of last hours of man that is about to be hanged. This is closer song of legendary Number of the Beast, first album with Bruce Dickinson on vocals and last with Clive on drums. For me Maiden song with best lyrics. Music is just perfect and vocals are exellent aswell. Moment that gives me goosebumps even by thinking of it is ending where Bruce screams YEAAH YEAAH HALLOWED BE THY NAAAME. Live from 1982 is just perfect. Listen to it. NOW!

3. War Pigs by Black Sabbath

Anti-war song by founder of metal genre. I don't have much things to say exept "this song is fucking classic".

2. Octavarium by Dream Theater

24 minutes opera which is closer of the concept album of a same name. Lyrics is FANTASTIC, music even more. It features some exellent instrumenal parts which shows us why they are insane and why everyone should at least respect them.

1. Change of Seasons by Dream Theater

Another 20 minutes song by unmistakable Nightmare Cinema. This fucking song is, exept being a music lesson, a life lesson. Portoy wrote a text how he felt that day when his mother died and how it changed his life upside down. Musical parts are exellent, vocals too and lyrics makes me cri everi taem.

At the very end you can see that there are just a few bands repeating to the bottom of the list. I am very conservative and it is really hard for me to listen to something new because I am looking at them like at gods and I don't want to be dissapointed when I find something better. Crazy, right? I just want to remind you, this is MY list which means it is MY opinion and you should at least respect it like I would and will yours. Up the fucking irons!

Personally, a song has to touch me. It must let me feel something. And that may vary from a lot of different factors. From simply very energetic metal, to bands that give you a melancholic feeling. Or from anger to depression. And I don't care how a band achieves such. Is it with monotone, hypnotic riffs combined with shrieked vocals, fine. Is it done with very complex stuff and a complex structure, fine as well. A top ten songs would be impossible for me.

Also, you might want to call your list "The big Black Dream Maiden list".

I agree with Frostaudn. Also, the idea that you don't listen to other music because you don't want to hear anything better than the bands you look up to strikes me as completely absurd. From your post, I think you'd benefit greatly from discovering more music.

I don't know, I just felt completely bad when I found better bands than Maiden, it really was a shock for me. I knew that there must be someone better but I just felt really really bad because of it. I said that I am conservative. I had a chance to see (from some other posts) that we have completely different taste in music and view of it so I don't expect you to understand me. However thanks for replying :D

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
