Top 10 Heavy Metal Albums

Recommended Posts

I shall consider this a hypothetical "desert island" thing ... and with some pain-in-process select ten classics, but I refuse to arrange them into a hierarchic order (as that would give me a headache). They are all equally worthy, and it's all my taste, no objectivity even vaguely attempted ... which means there will be no accounting and no explanation. Oh, and just one album per band. Shit's gotta be difficult, right? Or at least painful.

Mercyful Fate - Melissa

Motörhead - Overkill

Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality

Iron Maiden - Killers

Judas Priest - Sin After Sin

Witchfynde - Give 'Em Hell

Budgie - Never Turn Your Back On A Friend

Diamond Head - Lightning To The Nations

Hackensack - Up The Hardway

Lucifer's Friend - (self titled)

- Black Sabbath - Paranoid

I'm impressed. Not only did you fail to list a single heavy metal album (or traditional metal as it were) you also snuck in some self promotion. So now I get to bust your balls about mixing up your sub-genres AND the whole promo thing.

Let's start with the big no-no shall we? Self promotion, of any kind, is forbidden outside the designated sub forum. Exceptions are made in very rare circumstances and this isn't one of them. So this is a caution. Next time you promote in the wrong place there will be a penalty.

Man, oh man. I mean I like the songs of my band and listen to our demo from time to time but generally I don't really bother listening to our songs so much because I sing them 3 times a week during practice and sometimes more often when we have a gig coming up.

Self promotion

Yea, it is self promotion but I think the rule is there to prevent spam. To me, if He really likes his music that much that he puts it in his top 10 "Heavy" Metal albums it is not so bad. Not like he spams the whole forum with it, but what should I say, just my point of view.

As to my top 10, don't usually listen to Heavy, so I can't come up with a distinct list. I do enjoy Ozzy, Maiden, Motörhead & Venom from time to time though.

Yes the rule is there to prevent spam. However we have had this before - people start out putting their music into top ten threads, then find a way to relate other bands to them in different threads, and suddenly they have 100 posts promoting themselves and you realise that's all they were doing. Giving him a bit of an informal warning now will hopefully stop something like that happening later. I want to keep this place running smoothly and if every now and then I'm a bit heavy handed in doingg so well so be it.

Wow, you think your album is one of the 10 greatest heavy metal albums ever made? That’s some confidence. And foolishness.

I’m a great looking guy, everyone knows it, but I’d never put myself in a ‘top 10 best looking guys list’. I’d leave that for others to say so...

There is also the minor issue of carcass being a goregrind band, Crimson Glory a power/prog band, Pantera a groove/thrash band, Megadeth a thrash band, Iced Earth a power metal band, Dream Theater a progressive metal band, Yngwie being neo-classical, bfmv being hot topic-core, and I honestly don't know of that one band left that isn't his own (which I haven't bothered looking at because reasons) Sure would be nice if he you know mentioned actually heavy metal bands.

I think he just read the thread title as ‘metal’ and in the hurry to self-promote didn’t read the other lists. Easy mistake to make in 2019.

How could I be so foolish? It all makes sense now. No one has time to read in 2019. We're all far too busy being offended by things on social media and obssessing over the latest celebrity gossip.

Emotions rule like angry Archons, performed by bad actors in a play of 140 characters or less. To offend or off/end oneself, for guns have no trigger warnings to stress. But, spiritually, they're already dead. 'Tis better to mime the magic of memes unsaid. Thus, let Gnosis lead the way for the Elect, and leave the rest in mourning, unwoke, instead.

Heart? Apparently a metal one, no less.

Courage? Even if it be a cowardly kind.

Brain? He's off to see the wizard it would seem.

That’s enough slam poetry out of you, thank you very much. Or should that be vam poetry?

@RequiemThat level of punnery should be pun-ishable by law. A case of fourth degree worder.

The allicin wonderland of words is the cure for what ails me. I’ve always got my heart up my sleeve (f)or a mean-ing doubly crossed in translation.

Your double-crossing has nought to tic (tak) toes boxes, and now I’m mad at yer, as a march hare or there as I down this rabbit whole with gravy.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
