Hey everyone, there were no news for a long time! Finally, the full discography ("the flesh of forest crucified" 2008, "the symphony of the ultimate collapse" 2014 and "№3" 2015!) of the Max Shtanke melodic band Black October (ex-Alkonost, Winter Dream, White Midnight) is available on bandcamphttps://blackoctober.bandcamp.com/album/the-symphony-of-ultimate-collapse

A press release of the full-lenght CD 2014 were stated: “It is the project of the current vocalist of the famous Russian pagan metal band Alkonost Maxim Shtanke, on which you will hear extreme melodic blackened beautiful death metal of the highest quality with its unique melancholic atmosphere and a sense of awakening at early spring morning, covered with dew drops and mist, after which you will find the brightest ray of risen sun breaking through your ghostly dream. Very much expressive and seething with emotions and a variety of changing colors this music for all fans of Omnium Gatherum and Embraced, although these are only approximate comparisons.”

And here again I talk with the band from the city of Naberezhnye Chelny, though this time, a wide range of little known Russian metal listeners - melodic death metal band BLACK OCTOBER, which released a few days ago their remarkable debut album. Yes, despite the fact that this town is appreciated and known more for its pagan metal collectives, there are not bands only playing that style, but also theres a beautiful melodeath crew, with neoclassicism and with the spirit of the 90s, in general, different rare music in our time and in our country. If you love classic and very melodic extreme metal - certainly check it out album "The Symphony of the Ultimate Collapse", but in the meantime read my interview with vocalist / guitarist / composer Maxim Shtanke (who also sings in the famous band Alkonost) and guitarist Victor Buznaev.

  - Welcome! Tell the story briefly of your band.

M- Hi everyone! The very name of the band Black October is already being used by me for a long time, but as we stand MDM group and exist - its since 2006. It was then distributed the first self-made CD-r bootleg in 2006, containing about 10 songs. Despite absolutely bad quality, Disc received positive feedback, thereby increasing the activity of the band. In 2007 for the first time we entered the studio, and a year later released demo-album "The Flesh Of Forest Crucified", containing 4 compositions, of which only one has been overwritten for full-length, and three of them were only available in "The Flesh Of Forest Crucified." In 2009 was one of the attempts to write the full-length album, but due to the poor quality of the first track, the case was immediately frozen.
V - In the end, a second guitarist in the band and the movement was resumed with renewed vigor. A second wind. And, in the end, jointly managed to finish the job!

          - Why so long after the album was recorded longtime demo?

M - To begin with, thats the previous record "The Flesh Of Forest Crucified" was to be our debut album. Just so happened that at some stage of studio works we were unhappy with the recording process, although I have while recording drums felt we'll still torment ourselves at mixing, since usually soundengineers do not know how to record the drums good, I mean this is not drumming, but specifically the recording of drumming. Although it was a long time ago. In general, we decided to break the record after 4 record, not to kill all material with such quality. As a result, even when we found some sort of system, like all well-written, the process is not particularly accelerated. Everything depends not only on me, but from people with whom I work. Someone is always slow, fucked your brain. If I tell the details, it will be boring, dull and uninteresting. But all works on «The Symphony Of The Ultimate Collapse» finally completed. All is well and I'm happy!

Whats about your lyrics? Why you sing in English?

M - In lyrics there are the reflections on the contemporary world and the future, about the final collapse and the uprising from the ashes. All this filled with romance, elements of fire, the mystique of another reality, dreams, ups and downs, victories and sufferings. Prior to 2007, all lyrics written in Russian. But honestly, this was done because there is a theory in Russia that the Russian band has to sing in Russian, because like "You sing primarily to those where most do not understand a foreign language", "groups of texts originating from non-English countries are blunt, illiterate, and sung with an accent, "" English-speaking countries will laugh"," need to be a patriot"," Russian language is steeper."

          - Are you fetched with exclusively Russian metalheads' problem about language selection for singing by Russian metal bands?

Well, yes, I already started on this in the previous answer. I can say personally to your taste, and on behalf of all those who supported me in this regard - that all these allegations, which are often addressed to bands from listeners, almost by fiat tone - bullshit! It's just a matter of taste. Explain: on the eve of recording "The Flesh of Forest Crucified", I sat and listened domestic metal bands, most of which are sung in Russian, for example, various brutal death metal bands, where absolutely no discernible in what language songs are sung and nothing does not bother, but something like mdm and thrash / death bands, despite the good music and sound cut my ears, and I realize that I can not listen to metal music of pure European or American school in RUSSIAN! Naturally in such bands as Black Obelisk, and the like, which, in principle, play music so distinctive, it's okay in this regard! Well, we had an issue with the lyrics quickly to decide, I called my old friend to consult how to be received and simple tips on type "You still can not play commercial music, though not noise-grindcore, but still. Just do what you like, do everything correctly and efficiently, but to your own taste. "Well, even pros drawn, but I think that it is too long. Overall, I spat on those stereotypes that does not suit me as the author of my songs, and rewrote all texts to fuck.

- Whats the music do you listen to? Is something the musical reference for you?

M - At this moment, completely different from the blues of 30s to various modern music. Special guidelines are not we play what like.
V - I also listen to different music. Basically all in the mood. More often than others I have in the playlist such bands as Septicflesh, Gojira, Decapitated; such tough guys as Ihsahn, Devin Townsend.

          - What are the main problems in Russian metal or rather Russian metal scene together with fans of music do you see as much touring musician?

M - If previously all had problems with the sound in the main, and often the device was just plain shit, which did not give the required strength and quality for a relatively large number of people, but now that's all right, but the playing is now only for the elect...

          - Maxim, what is more important to you: Black October or Alkonost?

M - Well, there certainly is no single answer. On the one hand, I have now a number of works related with the album of Black October "The Symphony of the Ultimate Collapse", and of course for me it is more important at the moment. But on the other hand we have many works and gigs with Black October. I think we will record a new album of Alkonost soon. Well, Ill cope. We still have some musical surprises with our participation, in addition to these two gangs. So all fumes and fun, the main thing that opportunities remain to do so.

          - Do you have a confrontation with former vocalist of Alkonost or okay?

M - Well I do not know, we do not talk so close.

          - Do you think the choice of a trend at-the-moment metal subgenre is dictation of the heart or commercial conjuncture? I mean too widespread nowadays pagan metal...

M - Yeah... good question. And partly provocative. Of course, I think it's like you said... there is a "commercial conjuncture", yes. The word is still picked. Let now some people will throw pieces of shit in their monitors, but, alas, most of heavy music now tries unnecessary. That is why there is a bunch of young, which would be glad to play your favorite metal music, but they understand: 1) to play in small clubs they are tired 2) their records are not needed to anyone in the form of real cd 3) most likely none label will not sign them 4) all fixed costs, no payback. This is not my personal guess, it's all of the communication with the musicians, who are divided with sore fairly. Now I'm not talking about all bands of course, some really like that genre, in which play, but this is units.
V - I think this is the overall capture of attention, as earlier in thrash, grunge, alternative. There is nothing wrong with that. All the time and I think the time will come soon for MDM or another style and it will be as in demand as ipagan metal now.

          - Do you have the stuff for the next album, the project will be continued?

M - Yes, there is. Moreover, 80% is ready for recording. Because it is independent of all circumstances. I think because the music is not sucked from the finger, without the thoughts in the type "how to write something commercial, whether it will be fashionable - or not fashionable." We just play those tunes that come from the heart and mood.

          - Ok, thanks for the interview. Finally, name the top 5 of your most favorite music albums of all time:

M - Thank you! Five metal-albums: Metallica "Master Of Puppets" (1986), Megadeth "Youthanasia" (1994), Children Of Bodom "Hatebreeder" (1999), Necrophagist "Epitaph" (2004), Black Obelisk "Dead Season" (2012). Goodbye all, success to you, and listen to "The Symphony of the Ultimate Collapse"!
B - Thank you, dude! My Five - Pantera "Far Beyond Driven", Gojira "The Way of All Flesh", Decapitated "Organic Hallucinosis", Ihsahn "After", Devin Townsend Project "Deconstruction".

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
