Just saying hi

Hi everyone,

I am Sisa, I am in my thirties and a single mom of 3 kids between 7 and 13. I live in mid-west Ireland. My choice of music is a very long list so I'll just name the ones that dominate my stereo: Dark Funeral, Marduk, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth, Belphegor, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Slayer, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Entombed, Unleashed, Amon Amarth etc. (I can keep going but I think you kinda know what to expect in my music collection)

I am a welder by trade but currently being retrained as a bus driver and I am a bit of an entrepreneur online. I also paint slates and furniture, mostly family and football crests on the slates but I do some interesting furniture.

I have to admit, I have an Irish metal forum of my own which goes with my website which we started recently and I am here to see how a forum works. (admin, I am not copying your forum, nor am I here to advertise mine, I am only here to get inspired and see what it will take to keep a forum going, no bad intentions at all! If it's a problem, please feel free to remove me)

Any questions, just ask. If it's not too personal I will answer, if it personal I might answer too but that depends on the question.

G'Day Sisa hope you enjoy it here. Some killer bands in that list. If you need anything please don't hesitate to ask either myself or the other moderators we'll be happy to help if we can.

Regarding your own forum might I suggest using our Personal Message system to get in touch with dilatedmind? He's the guy running this place and I'm sure he can give you some pointers. Dude is seriously busy as we go about overhauling the site but will likely get back to you when he can.

Hey Sisa, welcome to the forum. Painting slates sounds enigmatic to me. Is that a common art form in Ireland?

It's not common. I only know of one other person who does it. Believe it or not, I only started doing it because I was told I couldn't. Lol I can pm you the Facebook page if you want to see them. Not sure if I'm allowed to post it as a reply because it could be seen as advertisement.

Thank you :) I will ask but if he is busy at the moment it can wait. No rush. Where are most of the people here from?

Mostly it's Americans. There's a few Brits, a Belgian, and 2 more Aussies that are semi-regular but it's a pretty small community here. Upside of that is a friendly community where people just talk about whatever.

Please do post them, thanks. I imagine that everyone here will agree you have scored high marks as forthright, engaging and unassuming. Given that, you can likely get away with anything.

I think I need to shrink all the pictures in order to post them. It's easier to post the link to the Facebook page for the slates:

I think I'm able to post a few tables I painted. If you can see them it worked. :)

And I am not going to test that theory. I'm not here to get away with anything. I'm happy to meet a few crazies like myself, have a bit of craic (fun) and learn a few new things.

We've got a thread for sharing our artwork, if you feel like posting images of your slates. We've had a few illustrators advertise there before, so occasionally we see some pretty cool work, although they hardly ever stay for long.

Only seen your post now... Already shared them here... I'm not here to advertise though, I have more work than I can handle at the moment, it's always busy before xmas and it's only a hobby really, I'm too busy to do it fulltime...

No worries. Cool stuff. I'm not Irish, but, sláinte.

Sláinte! Ceol agus craic! Listening to Hang The Bastard and drinking the last of the fire eater (cinnamon whiskey). Slightly tipsy so it's a good thing it's nearly bed time lolhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvYvGo2CBxw&feature=youtu.be

Hello, sorry it has taken me a while to respond.  I like to see nowadays if new arrivals post in a few threads first before I go as far as saying "hi".  Some good bands on your list and I hope your website and forum take off for you.  Hope you stick about and continue to get involved.

I like it here so I'm not going anywhere :) Thanks!

Perhaps an introduction to our forum's pride and joy is in order then...

May I introduce MetalForum's crowning glory the mighty Sexually Efficient Oyster. Formed in response to another user's introduction thread this band will rock 'til you drop. After that well do you really want to know? :D

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
