Most Talented Women in Metal

I have to say, even as a guy who can admittedly tend to act fairly chauvinistic from time to time, I've always been fascinated with the amount of female musicians in the metal scene, seeing that growing up all I seemed to encounter was the ones who were basically forced to lifestyle by boyfriends until it became second nature....which sounds pretty terrible..but okay. Anyway over the years I've gotten to know a lot of women in the metal community who possess such talent that simply stands out from the male-dominated genre we're all used to, whether its for pure talent or just because they're pleasurably observable, in which the latter may be a component of an argument I wish not to go into here.. Anyway, made this thread to discuss who we all think are the best female metal musicians in our scene, because there's plenty to pick from. My first and foremost choice is Rae Amitay of chicago's Immortal Bird. She's the lyricist, vocalist and session drummer (sometimes live) and does a simply masterful job of each. Her lyrics are a bit on the emotional side, but twisted into a manner that will make you die-hards not so ashamed to relate to. Though she has a limited amount of range, her perfectly mid-pitch shriek fits their often fractal but natural death metal sound well enough to the point that I really couldnt imagine another vocalist for the band. watch?v=qfNkFxnZjZk (two-song set) She is the recording drummer, but think she cant do it all at once? Think again fuckers. (fun fact: catch 12:43 for my sexy paper-white ass in the emperor cutoff to pop up ready for my hollywood-headshot) watch?v=WxdMqmJktl0 (full set) Edit: good look Gorbo

I'm the last person who aught to hand out technical guidance, but... if it's a youtube video, you write (youtube)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e__a8LQlqsI(/youtube) Only you need to cut all the "https://www.youtube.com" out such that your left with... (youtube)/watch?v=e__a8LQlqsI(/youtube) except use brackets, [] , instead of parentheses (). /watch?v=e__a8LQlqsI I don't know when I've ever felt so useful! The above is the most fully awesome short science fiction movie in the whole world, so go ahead and watch it if you like.

props for the tip Sally Gates is the lead guitarist for Orbweaver, a miami band usually described as psychedelic death metal, one of my absolute favorites from the Florida scene. While I'm not always crazy about the tones she uses, her solos and schizophrenic interludes between riffs are the bread and butter of their sound. Plus what's not to like about a hot blonde chick playing a PRS? I couldnt find the studio recording of the song I wanted to reference on youtube, but here is their bandcamp with the latest album, Church Warden Procedure is my favorite https://orbweaver-official.bandcamp.com/ And here's a live vid of it just to see her in action. That closing riff, man does it get me. watch?v=er0qUO6laJ8

What don't they have to do with metal ? I am afraid my knowledgebase of the numerous subgenera's is out of date. I am 48 and discovered metal in the late 80s with bands like Death' date=' Venom ex. Have had a tendency to refer to it all as simply metal.[/quote'] They're not even remotely close to a metal band. It would be fine if the question wasn't about talented women in metal, but it is. My bad. Do you have any recommendations? I joined this forum to discuss a musical topic foreign to the people around me' date=' and learn something along the way.[/quote'] We have recommendation threads set up at the top of nearly every genre section that you could select in the middle of the front page, but if you're not sure what you're looking for specifically, that may take some navigation. What are you after specifically? Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

I would say : 1. Lita Ford, because she inspired a lot of us to become just more than spectators. 2. Angela Glasgow and Tarja Turunen because both of them gave different significance to the vocals and put some kind of high standars for the newbies ( I'm not letting Alissa White-Gluz nor Simone Simmons appart) 3. Finally, I would say Joan jett, but because she managed a whole band on her own.

I can't put her on the same level as many of my favorites simply for her one-dimensionality, but Katherine Katz has one of the sexiest screams in all of metal to me. Her tracks on Agorapocalypse are simply incredible in a despondent, filthy way. I've also recently discovered Cloud Rat, in which Madison Marshall has a similar style but not quite on par with Katz imo, but I really dig it.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
