The Beard thread.

A very impressive production Jeffery, but you might ought to hide the craft a little and keep the fussy regimen details under your hat. Though perhaps I ought to google Biotin, come to think of it.

Ah come on, Gorbo - I know you're an advocate for the power of the mysterious and ineffable, but surely that doesn't extend to avoiding discussion of beard-grooming tips and tricks in the very thread where they're most pertinent. Perhaps, given your recent acquiescence to your own inner tonsor, you find yourself less likely to be a staunch champion of hirsute heroics? I, for one, value the generous (and I daresay brave) contribution Jeffery's made to our discourse, furthering the laudable goal of maximal beardedness for the greatest number.

I have been growing a beard and taking it seriously for well over a year now. Beard oil, beard conditioner/shampoo/wash, and the right comb(s) is crucial to maintaining a healthy and good-looking beard. Also, a healthy diet is incredibly important and some growers use Biotin for healthy and fast growth.

Nice. I recently trimmed mine up, but it's about that long. It's thinner than I would like though, as my infant daughter likes to use my beard as a handle, and there are some inevitable losses from it.

All right, all right, I acquiesce. This is the time and the place. You know, I wash my beard with borax and then rinse it with vinegar. Well now, it's not a beard, it is muttonchops, so there's that. It's also stalled out a bit, so it may be time to star downing some raw egg yoke and mixing up a little brewers yeast, molasses and kefir. What's the consensus among my fellow beards-men here, does that sound like a good approach?

Feel like yourself again? I still have the same "short beard with no mustache" thing going on. I shaved for a little while right when we moved but it wasn't making me happy.

As much as I can at the moment. Now if I could just get the hair to stop sprouting up everywhere else...

It's your dwarvish blood. Just wait till you have to teach your daughters how to shave. [emoji3]

That's honestly been a concern of mine. Both of them have thick hair like mine, but I'm hoping that they take after my wife when it comes to body hair. Otherwise, they've got an uphill battle ahead of them.

I am all for "it's your face, grow your beard down to your knees, if you want to", I do prefere some facial hair like the  "musketeer" style, side burns or a single braided beard. But as for wild bushy beards or hipster beards...ehrm, no!

However with that said, if I was a guy I would grow a beard...I would wear it in spikes, hang skull led lamps in the ends, and go around scaring the shyte out of everybody *lol*

I've never really had a proper beard because even after a day of not shaving I find the whiskers quite annoying. After two days it's on like donkey kong and at that point I shave it. I guess I should probably grow a beard at least once in my lifetime...

I'm about 9 months into growing mine back, and my daughter isn't impressed. She says, "dad, in going to need you to have a lot more beard!", so I guess I've got a ways to go. At least my new employer ended up being accepting of it.

I keep mine trimmed to about a half inch. We've had a run of upper 80s days with a lot of sun and humidity, no goddamn way could I keep a full beard going. I'm glad my hair is long enough to tie back again, or else I'd be shaving my head in a quickness.

Salt Lake City has been hitting the hundreds well before the first day of summer this year, which is unheard of. Now I'm contending with 110 in Las Vegas, but then I remember that no amount of hair will make it feel any more or less like I have just opened a hot over and stepped into it any time that I go outside.

I shouldn't have to deal with both Mormon's and 100+ degree temperatures, either one is torment enough on its own. ?

Just think of it as the Mormons' punishment for being so absurd. You just happen to be stuck in there with them through no fault of your own. Move to Denver, one of my best friends (and sometime guitarist) just moved there, and I could try to hook you up with my old drummer.

Denver is great! It's a lot like Salt Lake, but without Mormon's. They have a really great scene there, but most of the musicians I know there are busy with a bunch of other bands, especially Blood Incantation and Spectral Voice. It would be nice to play with some different people, but I have my hands full musically right now too. Edgar and I are writing some weird space-themed black metal right now, in addition to doing the post-Nevertanezra album. I have a lot of friends there too, 3 of the guys I went to MDF with live there, so it's kind of the ideal place for me. Now I just need to find a job there and convince the Mrs...

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
