Re: favourite food/drinks/restuarants

Tequila (to-kill-ya) is one of my least favorite drinks. When I was 16 I got so drunk on tequila that I did naked cartwheels around my house and ended up smashing the tequila bottle on the ground in my garage' date=' and didn't have the good sense to put shoes on to clean it up, so I cut up my feet pretty badly. I've had a hard time drinking tequila ever since, as it also gave me the worst hangover I've ever had.[/quote'] I had a bad experience puking right in the middle of the bar in Bucharest because my Romanian friends' Finnish friends kept buying me shots that I was trying to refuse. Tequila sucks. My favorite chips are wasabi-cuttlefish, hands-down. Or jalepeno and vineagar at a regular grocery store.

Re: favourite food/drinks/restuarants I've yet to puke because of alcohol, I've passed out before (after what I'm told was a seven hour session I tried to pace myself as I normally do but clearly it didn't work and the one person who stayed sober-ish informed me that by the end everyone was in pretty bad shape, I don't even remember what we were drinking) that doesn't happen regularly I generally handle my alcohol very well

Re: favourite food/drinks/restuarants Checking my Pom to Oz-and-everywhere-else-for-that-matter dictionary...chips equal...crisps  (chips here are what you all call fries - weird world isn't it!) ! Personally, I like a lot of the basic flavours, ready salted, salt and vinegar, cheese and onion, smokey bacon and steak. McCoys chips are also by far superior to all others - good and thing and big and strong flavoured :D !

Re: favourite food/drinks/restuarants Well, I like Kettle pepper and salt chips quite a lot in addition to a wide spectrum of Ruffles. I also like nacho flavored Doritos, Cheetos, Chili Cheese Fritos, and Ranch flavored wavy Lays. Yup, mainly American tastes there...at least until they make brisket flavor chips...

Re: favourite food/drinks/restuarants Man, all this chip talk is making me crave them, especially some of these great flavors being posted that I've never had. The "grilled chorizo & caramelised onion, fire roasted chilli and sea salt" especially caught my attention, as I'm a big fan of chorizo and most spicy foods. I'm partial to sea salt and vinegar or sweet maui onion chips myself, but I'm going to have to find these chips that murph is talking about. Now I'm craving chorizo as well, I had a ton of it in Bolivia and it makes me miss that place even more. You could get choripan (a chorizo sandwich) from most street vendors down there, which was delicious, and they put it on their pizza, which is beyond awesome. *drool*

You know, they say that, but when I was in Europe, all of the "crisps" I tried that weren't just American chips (which I didn't see much of, not that I ever thought twice about it) had a really different consistancy than ours. It was a pleasant consistancy, but they were lighter and crispier than ours... almost like Pringles. Not that I eat chips regularly. Most of my favorite foods are fruits and vegetables.

I'd be pretty bored with food if we didn't have a great international market so I can cook all sorts of supremely spicy nonsense. Thanks be to the migrant workers and foreign university students in this sea of southern Illinois whities.

Re: favourite food/drinks/restuarants I actually had something similar happen to me at an Indian resturaunt in Brisbane, I ordered the beef vindaloo and because most indian places give you a choice as to how spicy you want it I said extra hot of course, waitress says "are you sure?" I say yes she says "no really are you sure?" I say yes again and they gather around like it's some major spectacle, I don't see what the big deal is what a white bloke can't like things spicy, I reckon they stuffed up too because I'd only rate what I got a medium maybe medium hot but it was nice so no big deal

Re: favourite food/drinks/restuarants

You need to try a Phal' date=' they are supposed to be the hottest. When I was in India I found you could get all the regular types of curry, they all had their own flavour but you then had them as hot as you liked.[/quote'] This discussion is somewhat funny because I had an English tennis player for a flatmate in my first year at college and he said he got well tired of all the spicy food when he went to India for some tennis matches. We've got an Indian place with great food in Albuquerque called Rasoi that I liked a good deal more than I thought I would.

Re: favourite food/drinks/restuarants My favorite Indian so far has been my brother's wife's cooking. Her parents are from India nad she lets me help her cook; when I got back home from visiting them in Phillie I was using Jhiru (I think it's spelled) for weeks. And I love going to ethnic resaurants and groceries and being asked "You like/ know that's intestine/brain/tongue/etc? You like Salt fish? You like Spicy? You like preserved vegitables?" Because I understand WHY they're asking. But, yes, I do. :D

Re: favourite food/drinks/restuarants unfortunately it's a forty five minute trip to the nearest ethnic grocer which is really just a collection of stalls more of a market really so I don't get in there as often as I would like but I do love eating different foods and that is part of the reason why I'm excited for my trip to Thailand in September

Re: favourite food/drinks/restuarants Just made some ridiculous steaks last night. We went to a local butcher shop and grabbed some monster sirloins to cook for my father in law for father's day, they seasoned them with their homemade dry rub and they turned out fantastic. They were about 20-24 ounces each, and I could only fit 4 on my grill at a time!

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
