You'd love it.

It's cheaper than marmite. I've got no excuse not to get a jar 🫣 I can see why you don't like marmite as Vegemite is very different. Its essentially same product but it tastes so different

I can agree with that. I just tried baked beans and vegemite and while it wasn't terrible, I'm not sure I'd bother doing it again.. It doesn't get into the beans, and I wouldn't expect it too really, but it adds an interesting tang to the sauce.

This sounds bit better than marmite and honey. That was disappointing. Marmite toastie was excellent.did you try a Vegemite toastie.

Stock cubes are ok. I'm sure my wife knows I'm the big mouse taking a nibble here and there. 😉

Not sure how vegemite and honey would go either. I'd image the saltiness and the sweetness would fight each other a bit too much and possibly even negate each other.

I haven't tried a toastie yet but I'll give it a go eventually.

I don't use stock cubes here, I used a powder, so I'd have to take it by the teaspoon :)

Marmite and Vegemite are waste products and as such they belong the same place where the rest of our waste products go. Why would anyone ruin a perfectly good grilled cheese sammie by putting brewer's yeast waste on it? Crikey! Just have a beer with your cheese sammie.

That's a bit unfair, the products themselves aren't waste products. They are created from something that was once a waste product until some genius found a use for it and stopped it becoming an issue. It's like in Bartertown where they used pig shit, a waste product no one wanted, and turned it into something good. We are yet to work out how to power the country with Vegemite but it sure as hell tastes like it could be straight out of a pig's arse.

It's a cold wet miserable day in the Bush Capital today and my lunch time cheese and Vegemite toasty was superb and will see me through the afternoon. Later I'll have a beer, make a pizza for dinner and watch the footie. Ain't life grand?

In between my wife and daughter have gone to see the Baz Luhrmann Elvis biopic - I have never had any interest in Elvis and I fail to understand why Baz Luhrmann is given money to produce unwatchable movies - so I'm home alone and will listen to whatever 'orrible music takes my fancy.

Been a bloody cold week down here but thankfully we haven't had the miserable side of the weather. It's almost a heatwave here today at 14 degrees, but we've barely had any rain all week. I believe the east cost is going to cop another hammering this weekend, if it hasn't already, but I don't think it's going to make it down here.

My wife emailed me from work at 5 past 9 this morning to tell me she'd been into the shops and found chicken schnitzels and rolls on mark down so I didn't have to bother thinking about dinner tonight. It's a good Friday!!

Now does any old hunk of chicken qualify as a "scnitzel," or does it have to be a breast, or does it have to be breaded?

Looked it up. The 'Belgian' with the Dutch name. Brewed right there on the Gold Coast. By all accounts it sounds delicious.

It was.

And I think it has to be breast to be a chicken schnitzel  - and breaded -  but I can't remember when I last ate one so what would I know.

I probably wouldn't want one served parmagiana with mozerella cheese and tomato sauce like they do at the pizza place. My brother in law loves that, but to me putting tomato sauce on food is boring.

I don't eat too many of them, but if I was to eat a chicken cutlet (we don't use the term 'schnitzel' here unless we go to a German restaurant and order Weinerschnitzel, which is of course a veal cutlet pounded out thin, served breaded and pan fried with gravy over it) I would probably just have mine (breaded or unbreaded, doesn't really matter as long as it's crispy) on a sandwich with crispy bacon (streaky of course), melted cheese, spinach leaves, tomato, onions and lots of spicy chipotle mayo. Avocado or guac as well if they had any, but a lot of places don't. I'm sure you Aussies would want to call this a 'chicken burger' but that makes no sense to us here in the states because a burger means a chopped meat (mince) patty, usually beef, but it could also be lamb, turkey or chicken or I suppose whatever kind of minced meat you've got lying around if you want to get exotic.

Only losers have their parma's with just plain sauce and cheese. :P

The idea of a parma is to experiment and put all sorts of things under the cheese. Eggs, bacon, BBQ sauce, ham, tomato, avo, just about anything, even vegemite....maybe!

Oh maybe vegemite, egg, chilli sauce, bacon and then cheese....ok now I must remember to get some schnities tomorrow when I'm shopping!

I can totally get down with experimenting and adding interesting stuff to my chicken sandwich. Melted cheese, bacon, tomato and avo are standards for me but I'd be open to other shit too. Well excpet for brewer's yeast waste products obviously, that's just stupid. I just leave off the tomato sauce (which comes standard here on chicken parm) in favor of mayo or some kind of aioli or mustard or just about anything but tomato sauce. Even the 8 year old has outgrown his former love for the tomato based pasta sauces and he prefers when I make pasta with creamy white sauces. He'll even eat my Cajun cream sauce if I don't spice it up too much. While I do love eggs, they don't come as one of your standard options for burgers most places here (although I have seen it on a menu or two) and I probably wouldn't put an egg on my chicken sandwich. There are other meats we associate with eggs, most of them pork based.

I still find it funny that so many people, mostly here, think that burgers, sandwiches etc aren't 'aussie' if they don't have egg and beetroot in them. Yet so many take away shops that advertise hamburgers don't put either in them. Even McDonalds can only get it half right with an 'Aussie burger' that has beetroot but no egg. Hungry Jacks (Burger King) do an Aussie with both but the egg usually taste like cardboard...actually so does the bacon, the meat, and the beetroot and the roll taste like sugared tissue paper because for some reason they use a heavily sugared roll not a plain roll.

My late wife swore to me that fast food in New Zealand was way better than the smooshed down cardboard crap covered in plastic we have here in America and she said it actually looked like the pictures. I never believed her. Fast food is garbage everywhere. The only chain fast food burger place I tried while I was in Oz was Oporto when we were at some mall one day, but then it turned out they didn't have any burgers on the menu all they had were chicken sandwiches.

This is true. And I have to point out yet again that the pickled-red-stains-your-hands-and-your-shirt-and pants-too-if-you aren't-careful shit that they put in burgers is vile, and devalues the whole concept of what beetroot is and can be.

Well it makes sense, give most people sugar and their body will crave more, little surprise them that fast food outlets load up all the food with sugar no doubt in hopes of Luehring people back for more.

When it comes to burgers I would much prefer to make my own, there are three that I make on a semi regular basis.  My favourite probably being my lamb burger, mix garlic, rosemary, oregano, parsley and onion through the mints, make my own tzatziki, crumble some Greek feta, and normally some rocket and red onion.

HJ/BK have a national contract with Tip Top. Tip Top rolls have always been heavy in sugar. Put a HJ and a Macca's burger side by side and you can tell the difference, Sunicrust rolls don't taste sickly sweet. I'd suggest the amount of sugar is also more to do with preservation than seducing people. When I used to deliver to HJ's (for Tip Top) we often delivered rolls that were still partially frozen because none of the fast food outlets get 'fresh' rolls. The extra sugar helped fool people into thinking the rolls weren't a week old.

The best one I ever witnessed was the week leading up to Easter 2006 when I delivered 64 crates of 5 inch rolls to HJ's and all of them had a "Baked On" date for the following week. The loaders at the bakery had brought and thawed the wrong batch from the freezer and my local HJ's and three others got rolls that were baked in the future while the rest of the stores got rolls with stickers on them that said they were baked the day before delivery, as they wanted customers to believe.

I gave Vegemite a go. It's better than I remember. It's kind of half way between marmite which I don't like much and Tesco yeast extract which I do.  Thanks for the recommendation mate. 👍

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
