Just got back from a local racing themed brewpub in my neck of the woods. Not my scene in terms of atmosphere, but their brews were decent and the food was surprisingly good. I had some sushi nachos that I was not expecting to be as great as they were.

Sushi nachos, what the hell?

Tonight I had pizza by the slice after being unable to eat my family meal (lamb etc) due to an out of control 4 year old that ruined my appetite. I hit the pizza before reaching the metal pub. Alright it was too. Proper pizza is so much better than the Dominos we usually get. Funny that...

I ate pizza as well last night, can't really complain about food here in Italy, it's amazing overall.

I just want to say that I love your country and your food. Keep it up! ;)

Yes, sushi nachos. We did a double take too, and ordered them out of intrigue more than anything else. The chips were wontons, and were covered in the regular sushi sauces and trimmings instead of cheese and peppers, and finished with crab and tuna. They were wonderful.

Dammit, that sounds fantastic. We went out for sushi for my son's birthday (his choice), which was really good as usual. It's easier to find good seafood and Asian food here than it was in NYC, so there's a plus.

I shouldn't be surprised, with Massachusetts being known for their seafood. Do they use a lot of Atlantic fish that are outside the norm from the mostly pacific selection traditionally used? My kids are crazy about sushi too, so they'll often request it as well. There are only a couple of places that will fly it in fresh daily here, but those are the ones that I go back to. You can definitely tell the difference. Being in food shipping, it bothers me more than a little that trucks will bring pallets of sushi to our dock for redelivery, because one driver has a hard time delivering to 20+ locations. That part is understandable, but when the customer tells me that none of these stores want to receive their sushi for over a week, and it just spent how many days coming to us from a cold storage facility in Minnesota (WTF?), and who knows how long it sat there before getting put on the truck?

I actually don't know the provenance of the fish. I've never eaten sushi anywhere but the East coast, though, so I suppose I don't know what to look for. They offer a good few raw options I haven't tried there yet - mackerel, black marlin, striped bass, fluke, surf clam, and scallop - in addition to the usual yellowtail, salmon, and tuna. We usually wind up getting rolls because that's what my wife and son are into, but the next time we can afford to go I hope to get some sashimi for myself. I've been impressed with everything so far. Food service and my contact with food shipping certainly woke me up to what goes on behind the scenes, and I'd imagine that's even more of an issue with coastal seafood delivery to the middle of the continent. Watching raw fish thaw on the dock sounds fucking gross!

I've tried mackeral, but never black marlin, striped bass, or fluke, those might be the more regional ones. I'm up for trying whatever though, I like when a new fish comes up on the menu that I haven't tasted before, especially in sashimi form.

As far as the shipping portion goes, all of our trailers are new and have good, dependable reefer units, so the fish definitely isn't thawing in our care. That said though, for the kind of food that maybe marketed and charged for most due to "freshness", it seems weird to store it in Minnesota (from who knows where before that) and then distribute it out and have people ask your hold it for s week before you accept it. I'm sure the safety of the product isn't compromised, but I don't see how the flavor couldn't be diminished.

Lebanese. Very thick. My wife occasionally makes it, her family is from Lebanon.
Must be pretty similar, looks just like the Turkish variety, and I believe they're neighboring countries. If it is the same, it's fucking delicious, so good on you. I'm being sad that all of mine is gone, and that I no longer have a connection to that side of the world anymore...

I once received a free coffee in Turkey. True story - my wife and I went into a restaurant, for some reason had a coffee first, changed our minds about the food and as we were leaving the guy said no charge. Sweet memories of Istanbul.

FYI, I've also had one of True Belief's coffees and I can verify their deliciousness.

I'm jealous. It might sound weird, but there's not another place on earth I would like to visit more than Istanbul.

Just had a $5 Dominoes pepperoni pizza and now I have significant indigestion. I'm sure it will clear when I eat a huge pack of crisps (that's chips for you Americans) and a chocolate chip cupcake later.

With the house to myself I'm hardly going to cook up some vegetables....

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
