I fucking love paella. There's only one Spanish restaurant in town I've found, and they'll make it, but you have to special order it at least a day in advance and they make it in a portion that's too big for us. Once when we ate there, someone didn't pick up their special order, so for that day they sold it as a menu item, and it was one of the best meals I've ever eaten.

A day in advance? Well, shit, that had better be the best goddamn paella to ever have been yanked from the shining seas and glowing fields of Valencia... Seriously though, that makes at least some sense. I'd imagine it's not worth it to them to keep the necessary quantity of fresh ingredients around at all times just in case.

I've been super hungry all day, and I'm currently eating carrots and corn chips with hummus.

I'm sure that's the reason. It's an expensive dish to make, and if you don't have anybody show up to order it, that's a big hit to your bottom line. But yes, it was the best goddamn paella I've ever had, and if I could ever gather up a large enough group of seafood fans, I would gladly call in and special order it. We would feast like kings, and the setting at the restaurant would accommodate this. Their booths are extra large and have pillows, and they encourage taking a healthy amount of time to eat and let you lounge during and after your meal.

It's really a nice place all things considered. Salt Lake has low cost of living, isn't too big to have a lot of the big city negatives like heavy crime, but is large enough to have most amenities available, most tours are coming through here now, all manner of outdoor activities are readily accessible with usually an hour or less drive time, etc... Really the only negative is the Mormon's, and their influence in the city is waning.

Paella. More of the frozen stuff. I loaded it down with a bunch of harissa this time and it's fucking awesome.

You and your frozen paella. It sounds awesome though and just reminds me that I've only ever eaten paella outside of Spain once. I'll have to remedy that because it's good stuff. With a nice big jug of sangria to wash it down, of course. ;)

There obviously are Spanish influenced restaurants in Melbourne, but there aren't many of them comparable to other cuisines. Thanks for the reminder!

Had an interesting lunch today. A friend and I had various tasting plates which he cunningly claimed as a work related expense (don't ask). Salt and pepper calamari, Mediterranean dips, beef sliders, salami board washed down with two small beers.

Curiously, this semi-upmarket place played a mixture of classic hits including AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne and Whitesnake.

Just bizarre because it was a regular sort of gastro pub and quite frankly I didn't appreciate the identity crisis.

Dinner tonight was scrambled eggs on toast.

It does have a bit of that tone. Now I'm imagining you with a Hispanic accent, shouting "countess, joo got some esplaining to do!".

Just noticed this cool post. Sadly, it's usually me who is doing the esplaining...

The closest I've been to Spain is probably the east end of Long Island. The frozen stuff doesn't really hold up to fresh, but it's not far off - just gotta be careful not to overcook the mussels and calamari, see. $5 for a pound of delicious seafood and rice that I can prepare in one pan under ten minutes! Count me in.

I made more hash browns and eggs with salsa, and now we're gazing, with a certain amount of longing, at a juicy half of a watermelon that my wife just put on the chopping block. Also coffee and cookies. I'm fueling up for either a bike ride or a long day of painting.

Chicken coconut curry that my wife made. It's pretty good, and she always makes too much, so I have leftovers for days.

Wawa? Is that kinda like Subway, Deathstorm?

Wawa is more like a convenience store with a sandwich shop in it, but their sandwiches are better than Subway's. Not that this is a huge accomplishment, but the only time that I had one was at 3 AM after MDF, and it hit the spot.

Panang curry. It's good, but it should be spicier. I wish there was something like a card that I could carry to show "hey, I'm not just another white guy, I can handle the heat", but they usually don't believe me until I've become a regular. The last place I would frequent by my old job won't sell it as hot as I like it over a phone order, they made me work my way up to it until they remembered me.

I'll keep a pack of baby wipes in the freezer in case you visit. :D

Just had some pizza. It's not NYC pizza, but the crust is good, and it has chicken and peppers and onions on it. I'm psyched about that because I'll be having it for breakfast as well.

Oh, it still burns coming out for sure, no matter how much tolerance your mouth builds up. The flavor is wonderful though, it's worth some residual pain. ?

I'm all about thin crust for pizza, and lots of toppings. I'm not a big bread/dough eater, but a good combination of flavors up top is where it's at.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
