Sat through the latest Underworld movie last night.  If ever there was a franchise that should have been ended 4 films ago it is Kate Beckinsale's fucking Death Dealer vs big packs of wild dogs.  Utterly predictable in that (shock horror) neither vampires nor werewolves can be trusted even when they are in bed with one another.  So we have another 90 mins of indestructible entities killing one another loosely linked together by a script and some non-action scenes were vampires and/or werewolves take a long look at themselves and remember "better times"!

Yawn.

At the very least, they could have hired a consultant. I know a guy.

My son has become addicted to the Despicable Me franchise, including Minions. My wife said he'd "found his people". Accurate and disturbing.

Haha, as long as he's not a purple minion, you're in the clear.

I really like the Despicable Me movies actually, very funny and entertaining.

I've seen Minions all the way through but only caught bits of the others. I like that my son enjoys them so much, I'll have to watch them with him soon. He goes around making funny noises and saying "Kumbay! Banana!" and I guess it couldn't hurt to know exactly what he's on about.

They're really pretty good for kids movies, especially considering how vapid the medium has been for years. They're worth your time, even if the Pharrell score is completely insufferable.

I can't remember which cartoon movie was it, but there was one I saw that had plenty of classic heavy metal songs! Like "Crazy Train" and some Guns N Roses stuff.

Coulda been Despicable Me? Anyways, I loved those cartoons.

I also remember that "Monsters University"'s trailer had Motley Crue's "Kickstart My Heart" :D

Despicable Me's music was all done by Pharrell Williams, and I can't stand him. The Minions spin-off movie featured a soundtrack of most 60's and 70's rock that, while predictable, was a lot nicer to listen to. Kids movies aren't known for having the edgiest music around, so that's about the most that you can hope for.

It was this cartoon movie right here! I must've watched it a few years back with some chick I used to do who must've insisted on watching this instead of the shit I wanna watch all the time (that is vintage live concerts and rockumentaries)... In the end it felt great cuz I got my dose of lethal metal anyways.

I think I saw that once, but I don't remember it. Maybe I'll see if my daughter likes it.

The music definitely annoyed me when I heard it wafting in from the other room. Nowhere near as bad as when my wife developed an obsession with "Strange Magic", though. I know she likes fairies and happy endings and stuff, but what a weirdly thin plot, and the music made me cringe. As a good hubby, I watched it with her anyway...

Haven't seen that one. I'll try to avoid it, thanks for the warning.

You're all very well versed with children's movies. Even allowing for the parents around here this is weird...

My two vampiria infanta and I watched good old Mary Poppins for the second time. I was uncertain about whether they would take to it, but they love it. The classics never die.

They also love Frozen (of course - and our entire castle is bedecked with Frozen merchandise of every kind). A great kids movie we watched the other day was the one with the rabbit who becomes a cop in animal city... what the hell was that called again? Zootopia!! That was a great movie.

Zootopia is an awesome movie! Turned out a lot better than I thought, and I must have seen Mary Poppins about 5 times..... haha

There's something just hypnotic about Mary Poppins and those 1960s musicals. It's almost impossible to imagine anyone acting or dancing in this way. It's just bizarre. I watch them, half enjoying them, half completely stupefied by what I'm seeing.

Mary Poppins director: "Ok, so now the chimney sweeps are going to come up through the chimneys. They'll be all covered in soot, right? Then they do this ridiculous dance, like this. That's it, shake your legs weirdly like that. Good. Now all waddle around in circles like ducks. Yes, that's right. No, more like ducks. Now jump up and down on the spot a few times and wave your arms around like propellers. Good. Ok, we'll film this and everyone will love it."

Last night I watched a Japanese horror movie called Jigoku (Hell or The Damned in Hell) from 1960. I got the Criterion Collection version (I always recommend Criterion if you can get it). This was an awesome movie with vivid, disturbing images of hell. The essay in the booklet came with lots of suggestions of other similar titles I'll have to check out.

Who digs Japanese cinema?

Not particularly familiar with Japanese cinema per se however certainly enjoyed "Grotesque". Actually you can add "Ichi The Killer" & "Audition" (Takashi Miike has done some intense stuff - even made a cameo in "Hostel"). Now there's a great film...

So last night was Doctor Strange,  a movie that served as little other than a reminder that Benedict Cumberbatch really should just stick to being Sherlock.  I might be getting old (well, fuck I am getting old) but my tolerance level for these superhero movies just gets lower and lower of late.  I will confess upfront to knowing nothing of the Marvel character - not that the movie peaked any new curiosity either though - but the whole thing just smelt of very tired and familiar themes that were done years earlier (and much better frankly) with the likes of Batman for instance.

At some point during writing the movie someone got "Inception" on DVD/Blu-Ray for Xmas or a birthday and then decided to spend their special effects budget for Doctor Strange with scenes taken directly out of that film.  The ending is terrible too, I suppose the only redeeming feature being that I didn't see that dull and lame a termination to proceedings coming.   I am sure that if you have seen Green Lantern or Batman Begins you will just go - "this is the same two films edited together with that bloke from Sherlock in them!"

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
