The Movie Thread

After some disappointing movies I watched the past week (Fargo, Batman and Robin, Interstellar), I got to watch Dances with Wolves yesterday. Very impressive. Dances with Wolves is filled with beautiful shots, great music and some touching moments as well. The growing bond between Dunbar and the Indians is also amazing. Watching a four hour movie in one row is quite difficult though, so I would recommond it to watch it in two or three parts.

Last night I visited a "cinema".  Apparently it is a place where young and happening people go to view popular narrative on a really big telly.  Anyway, whilst I was there just generally not fitting in whilst eating cardboard in the shape of Doritos I happened upon a film about a bald man who although seemed to be very clever with his hands and feet was still learning to speak properly.

"Mechanic:Resurrection" has nothing to do with a business owner starting again after making some poor decisions in the automobile industry the first time around, in fact there's hardly any cars in the film.  Lot's of boats though, but again very little "engine-action" in comparison with what you would expect from the film name. Anyway, the bald man who spends far too much time in the gym instead of working on his social and cultural skills spends roughly an hour and a bit kicking the living shit out the whole cast and possibly some of the film crew also.  Oddly though the whole thing is actually very entertaining and even has some references to Soviet era Communism which pleased me no end!

It is a classic story of man meets woman, woman gets kidnapped and man kills other men in order to save the woman he just met five minutes ago but is now risking his life (and the safety and livelihood of others) to save when in fact he could disappear very easily and probably score on Tinder with much less hassle.

Things blow up very easily around the bald man and I never see him being careless with matches or anything so he literally must always be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Poor bloke.

Currently with a friend, we are working ourselves through the studio Ghibli movies in a random order. Literally every movie is so richly animated. From, for example, beautiful overviews, to very detailed rooms or actions in the background. The stories might not always be the best, but you will always find something to enjoy in these movies. Amazing.

Recently saw the trailer for The Rings and good grief. Ok so remakes are all the rage and whatever but The Ring isn't that old for a start. On top of which it looks like they've royally fucked it up. What made the originals (yes that's right because Ringu) so good was how well they told the story. First the rules were set out, we learn how and why the tape and Samara do what they do, then we see how things escalate leading up to the climax of the film. It makes sense, builds tension, and leads to a more engrossing experience.

From the looks of things this remake is just going to be jump scare central like pretty much all modern horror films and that shit doesn't work without context. I hope I'm wrong and it's just a rubbish trailer but we all know Hollywood's track record with remakes these days...

Heh, most of the movies I've seen lately would be improved by a little alcohol on top. Is it common for Australian movie theaters to serve alcohol?

We have a theater here that does, but they're constantly getting shit from the Mormon politicians in the state. They got shut down and fined for playing Deadpool, with the state crying foul citing strip club regulations about displaying nudity when alcohol is served. Ryan Reynolds himself gave the theater money for legal fees to fight it.

No shit, they're the fucking fun police. Were it not for them, Utah would be the perfect place to live.

I know you've got family there, but would you consider moving?

In order to keep the same climate, but with better people, I've considered moving to Denver, but I wouldn't want to miss out on my mountains. I'm used to their bullshit, so it doesn't get to me like it used to, and I've found ways around the ones that are really bothersome. It's getting better, but in a two steps forward, one step back kind of way. I'm surprised at some of the advances, I thought we would be totally in the stone age forever, who knows where we'll be in 10 years?

I watched "The Vampire's Coffin", or possibly better known as "El Ataúd del Vampiro", on Netflix late last night. I found it interesting, but a bit cheesy for my taste at times. It fulfilled the whole "guy kills the villain and gets with the girl" ending to my chagrin, but, nonetheless, very cool movie with some nice commentary on vampires.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
