Some fairly tragic shit going on at Casa Navy this week. We lost my wife's father unexpectedly under gruesome circumstances. She's an only child and I was pretty close to him too. It's been a rough few days, so music choices are pretty chill.

Rush - Presto - this is my go to comfort album. I can't begin to think how many times I've listened to it in my life, but it has to be tops on my all time play count. This is the one that got me into Rush. Not a bad song to be found.

Opeth - Damnation - I don't know if Mikael intended to, but this is the perfect album to mourn to. Perfectly captures the emotion of unexpected loss.

Mastodon - Once More Around the Sun - this was in rotation up until we got the news. Maybe not their high point, but it's the one I keep going back to.

My condolences as well. I have lost my father a month ago as well quite unexpectedly so I know what you are going through.

Thanks @Sheol. It's a slog at the moment dealing with funeral planning and estate stuff, not to mention an emotional wife with a hair trigger. But we'll get through it. Been through worse and survived. Everything in life, including life itself is temporary.

Sorry to hear about your father @JohanV. Mine passed last year. I wasn't particularly close to him. He was a bit of a scumbag, but it still hurt. Hoping it gets better for you as the days go on.

Fuck. So much fuckin' death 'round here lately man. I've never been any good at death.

When famous people or strangers die I rarely feel much of anything at all to be honest, even when it's a musician or artist or actor whose work meant a lot to me, which has led me to wonder at times if maybe there's something wrong with me.

When people close to me have lost loved ones then I feel empathy for them and their loss if not necessarily sadness for the actual person who has died. But I never quite know what to say to the survivors as I know from persoanal experience that mere words are generally inadequate for these types of situations. Standard stuff like "Deepest sympathies" or "My condolences" or "Sorry for your loss" or "If there's anything I can do" seem trite, empty, banal and stupid to me. I often feel like if I can't come up with something more or better than just that then maybe I shouldn't say anything at all.

When I've lost people close to me I've always felt more than a little uncomfortable with the outpouring of sympathetic rhetoric I've received from friends, coworkers, acquaintances and strangers alike. And that's not because I don't appreciate their condolences, it's mostly because I honestly just don't know what to say to them in return. "Thank you" seems trite and stupid while "it's ok don't worry about it" sounds cold, unfeeling and stupid too. "Shut up" would be downright rude and inappropriate.

I guess I don't like death because it's just about the only social situation I can think of that can leave me feeling awkward and at a loss for words. A feeling I'm not used to and don't like at all, so I do what I can to avoid it. But that's selfish of me I suppose, when a friend, acquaintance or someone close to me has lost someone dear to them I shouldn't be making it all about me and my feelings.

So for Navy, FA and Johnny5 as well as anyone else who may have lost someone close to them recently, know that I am truly sorry for all of your losses.

In the emoticons there needs to be something equivalent to Radar saluting the helicopter when Henry Blake takes off in the third season of M*A*S*H*.

Anyway, hails @navybsn and @JohanV

Tbh, I don't think there actually is an appropriate response, nor way to express sympathy. It's all weird, awkward and self-conscious. I think in general it's better to say something, even if it's a cliché than not say anything at all because then it feels like the other person doesn't even think of you and your loss.

Death - Human - now I think back, Lack of Comprehension was one of the first death tracks I ever heard and oddly this album is one of my least played Death records.  Relapse re-release/reissue so has instrumental and demo tracks on second disc which I don't think I have ever listened to.

Mutilation Barbecue - s/t - dumb name for a meat n' potatoes death metal EP that has no fucks left to give.  Concise and to the point.  Does what it says on the tin.

Mork - Katedralen - one of my recent bm band discoveries and fast becoming one of my preferred "safe" bm records of 2021.

Mörk and Afsky are playing in my town in November. We'll see if Covid is under control by then (all restritions are lifted tomorrow). Never heard Mörk so I'll have to investigate.

Fuck off Johan! I sadly agreed to go see Jinjer and Suicide Motherfucking Silence in Brooklyn in November so you'd better drag your lazy ass down to that show. Do it for me. The General commands you. Mörk and Afsky?!? I'd find that pathetic tour sneak backstage and kill every member of Jinjer and Suicide Silence with my bare fucking hands if I thought there was a slim chance they could get Mörk and Afsky to replace them.

Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta I - Fathers of the Icy Age

This landing yesterday on vinyl virtually sealed the deal on it being in my top three of the week.  Less ambient than the debut and I think it benefits from it really.  The cleaner vocals/chants do not sit as well with me as I had first realised (in fact I would say they are out of time in more than one place) but those exquisite leads do fill the air around them superbly.

Necrophagist - Epitaph

Oddly I had only ever bothered with Onset of Putrefaction before this week and so when the sophomore came up in conversation this week I ended up having a great time listening to this again.  For a technical death metal album it does not stray into wankery at any point.  In fact, both the tracks and the album length overall are quite succinct, showcasing the talent on display well without getting into ego massaging territory.  Another release with sublime leads.

Just the two this week.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
