Destroyer 666 "Phoenix Rising" - as Destroyer 666 sought to remove themselves from the retro-thrash scene they made a fucking fine follow up to "Unchain The Wolves" as it turns out.  Actually prefer this to the debut full length at the moment.

Weakling "Dead as Dreams" - a real find for me as I have pushed on to discover some unheard BM records this past month.  So full of emotion and harrowing structures that traverse into doom metal lengths, I am just hooked.

Immortal "At The Heart Of Winter" - I don't play this enough.  As well as being an icy cold blast of BM, I find this to be Immortal's real heavy metal album also.  Full of riffs and great structures.  Fuck yeah!

All great albums, and all from 1999/2000. Who says that was a bad time period for black metal?

Sorhin, Mortuary Drape, Sabbat, Countess, Nifelheim, Summoning and Obsidian Gate released good stuff as well.
Don't forget ...And Oceans, Demoncy, Dolorian, Lugubrum, Manes, Nokturnal Mortum, Sigh, Primordial, Taake, Antaeus, Mayhem, and Necrodeath, who all released standout albums during this time period. I'm sure that there are plenty missing, but while some bands fall into self-parody, others flourished.

Honestly, that period was a pretty interesting and surprisingly great time for the genre overall.

New week, new playlist.
1. Judas Priest - British Steel
2. Vader - Reborn in Chaos
3. Captain Beyond - (self titled)
I've never understood the heaps of praise that British Steel receives. It's a huge step down from 70's Priest in terms of songwriting and musicianship, and while it isn't their worst album of the 80's with a few redeeming songs being featured, it's not one that I reach for very often.

Blood Incantation "Starspawn" - well, this somehow passed me by originally.  These boys can fucking play.  Can't remember being this entertained by a death metal record in a good while.

Behemoth "The Satanist" - I never tire of this if I am honest.  It holds up well some 4 years after being released.  Definitely a band at their songwriting peak (even if that seems to piss the purists off) with this.

Orbital "Insides" - yep a non-metal release.  Fucking sue me!  The calm I have enjoyed this week, soothing the inflammation in my soul with the electronic tonic of Orbital has been a true gift.

It took me a while to get on board with them as well. I was blown away by their live set last week, so I finally bought the CD. Not in a DM mood lately but I'm sure that will change soon enough.

This week it's been:

Lethal - Programmed

Titan Force - s/t

Apollo Ra - Ra Pariah

Current week;

1) Baise Ma Hache - Bréviaire Du Chaos. That was unexpected, I'm digging this band quite a lot. While it doesn't reach the levels of their peers Peste Noire, it features the same melancholic/Byronian attitude of the latter, which makes their compositions sound more like a military march rather than a metal song.

2) Deathspell Omega - Diabolus Absconditus. I'm a seasoned listener of DsO, but it's still amusing how little I know about them. This EP is a total mind screw. Endless layers of dissonance and tempo changes, surreal lyrics (which seem more like a philosophical essay to be honest) and a lenghty interlude in the middle of the song, creepy yet relaxing at the same time.

3) Sadistik Exekution - The Magus. Well, they literally have a trilogy which consists of the word "fukk", so that's pretty self-explanatory.

From what I have heard, I think that they are able to replicate the attitude of KPN pretty well (which is significant, in my opinion).  However, I would agree that they are unable to surpass the mighty KPN in compositional ability.

Titan Force was a great band. Two great albums overall. I would have loved to hear more from them, even if Harry Conklin went on to do other things.

They brought out an interesting side of his vocals. I haven't explored much of his other stuff aside from a bit of Jag Panzer, but his approach to Titan Force seems unique. I usually like more aggressive vocals but I find myself preferring his lighter side. The self-titled is gold; I'm coming around to Winner Loser, which strikes me as both more inventive and more awkward. Definitely a grower. I wish the guitar and drum sounds on both albums had a little bit more bite, because they feel more low-energy than they should at times, but the softer mix also gives them a haunting quality that I haven't really heard anywhere else.

Three brand new albums are taking all of my time lately:

At the Gates - To Drink from the Night Itself. An epic, emotional monument.

Dimmu Borgir - Eonian. Epic, unusual and darkly grand.

Amorphis - Queen of Time. Some great moments but the queen generally lacks balls. Time will tell if this grows.

"Pesta Kommer" - Erebos My newest cd.  Though it seems to have more in common with ambient music/dungeon synth than black metal, it is nevertheless immensely atmospheric.

"Nacht" - Paysage d'Hiver I really have to be in the right mood to listen to Pd'H.  Few can come close to the level of atmosphere in his music.

"Wolf's Lair Abyss" - Mayhem A nice change of pace from the other two cds.

At The Gates “To Drink From the Night Itself” - as i stated elsewhere this has grown on me, although it only makes my top 3 of the week due to my efforts to get to grips with it causing me to play it so much.  It isn’t a bad record, just underwhelming and a tad flat in places.

Mournful Congregation “The Incubus of Karma” - harrowing melodies? Check! Drums that sound like tectonic plates clashing together? Yes please.  “Rock” guitar solos somehow blended in to death doom? Hmmm not sure it will catch on, but I like it here.

Aura Noir “Aura Noire” - we got some sick fucking riffs on here folks.  Nope, the wheel isn’t reinvented and who fucking cares?

It's funny, I'm having a similar experience. If the same album had been put out by anyone other than ATG I might not be so critical of its flaws, but at the same time I might not feel compelled to put any energy into listening to it.

Edited and placed in the At the Gates forum.

Three albums of the week:

Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi - Seventh Star

Dimmu - Eonian

Amorphis - The Bee Hive of Queen Nightwish.

  • 3 weeks later...

Winterfylleth "The Harrowing of Heirdom" - beautiful and heartfelt.  A real sensory experience.

Septic Tank "Rotting Civilisation" - knarly, hardcore/punk written by a now 50 year old Lee Dorrian and most of Cathedral and full of more "fuck you's" than you can count on one hand.

The Crown "Cobra Speed Venom" - The Crown are on form again, no emergency drummer shenanigans makes all the difference this time around.

That’s a really cool Cradle album.

Check out the Cradle of Filth thread in the gothic metal forum. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Mgła — Exercises in futility (I think I'm slowly getting into this band)

Czarface & MF Doom - Czarface Meets Metal Face (not metal; sorry OP)

Tomb Mold — Manor Of Infinite Forms

"Exercises in Futility" is a great album.  What has kept you away from Mgła until now?

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
