Dreams

I recently quit smoking (surprisingly not because of a new years resolution) but ever since I reached the three week mark, my brain has been giving me the most f*cked up dreams. I'll go to Tim Hortons and in order to get a roll up the rim, they want me to have a smoke. If I wanna buy anything at the LCBO (liquor store) I have to have a smoke before I can go in...everyone in my dream is trying to force me to smoke again. ...and sometimes I dream that I am a helicopter pilot and I can never see where I am flying. That one is oddly more unsettling than the smoking one

I had the most disturbing dream ever last night. I dreamed I had fallen asleep with my blinds open and there was this old woman standing outside my window tapping on it with a carving fork. This obviously woke me up and I looked out my window to see her. At this point she loudly said peekaboo I see you and started cackling like well I can't really describe it. After that I can't remember the dream probably because my conscious mind is blocking it out. Creepier still is that I woke up to tapping on my window this morning which I totally freaked out about until I realised it was a bird.

In the last weird dream I had I went over to my mate at the other end of the country on the bus to get my dreads done, I was supposed to buy a camper near him and drive back home. When I got there in the evening I got him to tattoo over the hideous tattoo on my butt, not thinking about having to sit still on it the full next day so he could do my dreads. Picked up the camper the next morning and barely half way home the thing broke down and no one dared to come near me with my black clothes and black dreads, it took me 3 days to get home with the camper while I was going mental without music because I brought cd's and the radio in the camper only took tapes. When I got home my best friend, who was minding the kids, was seriously angry with me because I stayed away nearly 6 days instead of 2.5 and the kids went apeshit and all I wanted to do was blast music... Weird thing about the dream is that it's so frikkin plausible. Apart from the bit where I actually have enough money to buy a camper lol

I was having wicked vivid dreams all last week that I was involved in another crash on my tandem bike going downhill because we were in a hurry to catch my brother racing at the track. Here's where it gets freaky...Sunday morning my pilot told me he wanted to catch my brother's race so we'd ride out, climb a hill near there, and get to the track around 9am. We crest the hill and I instantly get goosebumps and a really bad feeling. We are NOT the type to hold back on a descent - he loves to go downhill fast and so do I so when I say we should be cautious he knows something is up.

Want to know what really freaked me out though? When my pilot told me a car had crossed onto the wrong side of the road at a corner, a corner which we would have been taking at exactly the same time any other day.

That is freaky... Did you get predictive dreams before?

I dreamed last night that my ex was full on chatting me up in the pub... I asked him to go away a few times and eventually I gave up and pretended to play the game with him. I  ended up going back to his house where I killed him by strangulation... And in my dream I got away with it and I was chuffed... Weird shit because he is too strong for me to strangle to death and I haven't seen him in over 6 months and really don't think about him that much anymore... I suppose it means I'm finally getting over it?

I had the weirdest dream last night. I'm in bed with this guy I like and (don't be worried) we are cuddled up together and talking for hours and hours, somehow by comparing stories we find out we both have some sort of implant in our necks. So I gently cut his implant out and then it's his turn to cut mine out, he is scared to hurt me and it takes some persuading to get him to do it, he does in the end but only because it had to come out and I couldn't do it myself. The implants were metallic, small and very detailed, shaped a bit like a worm. The feeling of relieve, freedom and rebellion was overwhelming. Now I am not bad at analyzing dreams but wtf????

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
