  1. We Russians, Caucasians, have our own big stereotypes. And if you imagine a Caucasian metalhead, it sounds pretty funny to us! (if you're wondering why, I can describe it later.) And then the Caucasians created their own Black Metal album! In fact, it's very unusual for these places. And what about this album... He seemed very good to me. except that the first track seems to me very low quality I like the philosophy of the band more. She is focused on love for the motherland, her loved ones and patriotism. I really liked the history of their album, I advise you to read it) (it is available on the Internet) I personally talked to a member of the group, which is why I wanted to write my review like this They also announced a new album, which will be released on March 23. They promised that it would be better than the first one. Well, I hope I like it. So what do you think about it?
  2. <img>https://archive.org/download/pakkaslumi28/Valovoima%20-%20Vuonot%20cover.png</img> Finnish composer Valovoima has released new album Vuonot (Fjords). Vuonot includes 42 minutes of instrumental black metal with symphonic elements. Album can be listened and downloaded from the following links. 3. Hi everyone. I released my first single as a solo band on Spotify and Youtube and I'd love to share it with you. It's called "Forsaken Realms and Forgotten Heroes", and it's fairly inspired on RPG music and Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. I hope you like it and I wish I could hear your opinion. I want to keep with this project, introducing some black metal, heavy metal and RPG Synths, so if you like it don't be afraid to follow on Spotify or YouTube. Have a nice day y'all. ❤️
  4. Hi guys, hope you're all good and well. I've been working on my black metal project for a while now and it's at a point where the songwriting is done and all the instruments are recorded. It's currently in the mix/mastering stage. That said, In the process I was left without a vocalist (unfortunately too busy with his main band), so I'm hoping to find someone who's interested enough to step in. I'm also looking to get more releases done after this one, so preferably this would be an ongoing project for you too. Regarding the expectations - really the only requirement is that you can pull off black metal vox (preferably higher pitched) and have some recording gear, maybe some experience with writing lyrics, but we can also work on this together. Regarding the project itself - it's a black metal project. Nothing too raw, rather melody driven. The songs tend to be a bit longer then they usually are in this genre and they also explore different influences outside the BM realm (different chord progressions, odd time signatures etc). I'd also like to think it's got good production value. Currently it consists of two people. I'm doing the writing/track guitars and the bassist who's also taking over the engineering part of it. Let me know if any of you are interested. I'm happy to send over some demos, so you can hear what the previous vocalist did and what's 'expected' for the lack of a better word. Both, the bassist and I are easy to work with, so if you're looking to be a part of something like this, let me know. Best, V
  5. Dissonance has been popping up in some extreme metal (and hardcore) for decades, but the past few years have seen a lot of bands embrace dissonance as a defining feature of their music. Whether these groups come from a death metal or black metal background, I hear a good bit of stylistic convergence going on, so I'd like to gather them under one big disgusting umbrella here and post some links. A lot of this music is intentionally, almost perversely impenetrable, and isn't well-suited for casual listening; if that sounds appealing, awaken your inner masochist and dive in. In the spirit of maximum disorientation (or because I'm impulsive and lazy?), I've posted these in no particular order. I have several more bands to add to this thread when I have time, but feel free to post anything else that fits. ____ Gorguts - "Obscura": from late '90s Canada comes one of the essential founding documents of dissonant death metal. This album (their third full-length) was a bold shift away from tradition for Gorguts, and at the time it was very much an outlier. Brazenly fragmentary blasts, sickly churning grooves, gloomy melodies, haggard and frantic yelling, what's not to love? Gorguts - "Pleiades' Dust": I have to give Gorguts another entry here. The brilliant "Pleiades' Dust" is Gorguts back in their prime with a new lineup, eighteen years after the release of "Obscura". It's not as consistently aggressive as their earlier material, but the common thread is apparent; intricate musicianship, rich atmosphere, and refined, dynamic songwriting show a band eager to push their own boundaries. Ulcerate - "Destroyers Of All": Hailing from New Zealand, this band has been at the forefront of dissonant DM for nearly a decade, putting their stamp on the genre with twisted guitar lines and almost inhumanly complicated drumming, offering long and dismal songs that create a sense of slow, brooding menace despite remaining in nearly constant motion. This album is the one that drew me in, and it's still the one I enjoy the most, with drawn-out melodic ideas and post-metal textures reminiscent of later Isis. Deathspell Omega - "Fas - Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum": another one of the most influential bands in the style, this French black metal band is consistently jarring, abrasive, and chaotic, with excellent musicianship. Plebeian Grandstand - "False Highs, True Lows": while we're in France, this group should appeal to DSO fans; I could use the same adjectives to describe them. Tons of energy and aggression on display, with a bit of a hardcore edge at times. Apparently this album was recorded live, which is very impressive to me. Ad Nauseam - "Nihil Quam Vacuitas Ordinatum Est": an Italian band with a lot of similarities to Gorguts and Deathspell Omega, with vocals that often remind me of Marten Hansen (of A Canorous Quintet/October Tide). They've found their own voice in this style, and their energy and dedication to songcraft is obvious; this album manages to be complex and brutal while remaining consistently enjoyable. Mitochondrion - "Parasignosis": dark, murky black/death from Canada, with swirling guitar lines and a vibe that's somehow both hypnotic and pummeling. Portal - "Outre": Remember that time you got hit by an earthquake in the middle of a sandstorm? Almost the definition of murk, this Australian group offers very little to grab onto, basically forcing you to live this record from moment to moment. Abyssal - "Novit Enim Dominus Qui Sunt Eius": black/death with fragmentary, bludgeoning riffs that are more involved than the overall dark and distorted sound might suggest, conjuring both anger and a sense of melancholy. There's a lot going on here if you dig for it. This album and their debut are fantastic, although I found myself underwhelmed by their latest. Jute Gyte - "Night Is The Collaborator Of Torturers" (from the album "Discontinuities"): microtonal experimental black metal, a solo effort from the impossibly prolific American musician Adam Kalmbach. Unique, unsettlingly bent guitar parts that inhabit an uncanny valley of almost-recognizable tunefulness, with tortured screams that recall Rainer Landfermann's classic performance on "Dictius Te Necare". Most of Jute Gyte's albums are available as name-your-price downloads on Bandcamp; my personal favorites are this one, "Vast Chains", "Verstiegenheit", and "Isolation", but take the plunge for yourself. Krallice - "Ygg Huur": a group of musicians truly on their own path, NYC's Krallice combine discordant riffs with snatches of broken melody and intuitive but precise shifts in meter and tempo to create an immersive journey for anyone who's willing to follow along. The organic sound, melodic sensibility, and passion of black metal with the technical accuracy and structural flexibility to which death metal often aspires. This was recorded live, and watching them perform it live remains a highlight for me. Zhrine - "Unortheta": another phenomenal live act. I was unprepared for how crisp and powerful they would sound; I don't think this recording quite does them justice. Hailing from Iceland, they play an atmospheric and moody brand of blackened DM reminiscent of Ulcerate, but more accessible, with more of a focus on melody and groove. EDIT - full album stream got taken down, here's the opening track. Setentia - "Darkness Transcend": these guys are another group that could accurately be described as "like a more accessible and melodic Ulcerate", and as a result (especially since they're also from New Zealand), I think they tend to be overshadowed. That's a shame. This album has its own voice, apparent in their melodic sense as well as their songwriting style, despite obvious textural similarities. The work and energy they put in shine through. Mortichnia - "Heir To Scoria And Ash": a gloomy Irish group. Melody-driven but discordant post-black metal with pained shrieks, lumbering bass, and crushing atmosphere. Skaphe - "Skaphe 2": Originally from America but now apparently based in Iceland, this duo plays cavernous yet suffocatingly dense black metal shot through with atonal, delay-drenched leads and ghastly howls. Patterns resolve only to disappear, and somehow it remains captivating throughout.

  7. OUT NOW on SOL RECORDS TAAKEN - På mørke stier 7"EP On TAAKEN's debut ep "På mørke stier", German Odal's homonymous mastermind presents us with two tracks of raging elitist black art. What you get is Black Metal uncompromisingly worshipping the old Northern gods of the genre, nothing more, nothing less - pounding drums, ice-cold riffing and a rasping hateful voice, held together by a proud and passionate dignity that can not be caught by any lines in promotional texts like this, but must be felt, lived and breathed, with all anger and solemnity that you're capable of. It's exactly this torrential attitude and conviction that sets TAAKEN apart and poisons your veins with black freezing venom in each and every second of this seven inch wax damnation. From the underground, for the underground. Sol Records releases this testament of grimness as 7" ep, limited to 166 handnumbered copies, mixed and mastered at Black Wave Studios. Sample Track: Den kalde døden Purchase: Deviant Records / Sol Records Onlineshop * Bandcamp +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ OUT NOW on DEVIANT RECORDS ETERNAL MAJESTY - Black Metal Excommunication LP Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s several split releases with protagonists like Judas Iscariot, Antaeus and Krieg as well as their masterful debut full-length “From War to Darkness” (2003) made ETERNAL MAJESTY a household name not only in the French Black Metal scene, but a constant deliverer of pestilence throughout that meaningful period of underground radicalization. More than 14 years after their second album “Wounds of Hatred and Slavery”, E. M. complete their trilogy of terror with “Black Metal Excommunication”. Still, this is not your typical miserable ‘comeback album’ banking on something long lost, but an independent and distinct landmark of a band continuing its own path and identity. While its exquisite riffing, confident songwriting, outbreaks of furious aggression and the band’s highly intensive trademark vocal performances preserve strong nostalgic glances, “Black Metal Excommunication” does not feel like living in the past but culminates in something severely personal, straight and precise, heavily layered with a diabolical gravitas that is longing for a dark escapist journey. Deviant Records is proud to handle the 12”LP release of “Black Metal Excommunication”. Mastered for this lim. 300 vinyl release (incl. poster and insert) by Henri Sorvali (Trollhouse). 9. The other day I picked up a copy of Burzum's "From the Depths of Darkness" despite owning the four original black metal albums that Varg recorded in the early 90s. In case you weren't aware, "From the Depths of Darkness" is a compilation album of rerecordings of material from the albums Burzum and Det Som Engang Var, along with three new tracks which are mere ambient intros. I picked it up because I had not heard it, and I generally am interested in rerecordings of seminal works once better budget and production facilities are available. But I have to ask myself: Was this compilation really necessary? The recordings are better and of a higher quality, sure but don't really do much to change the overall feel of the songs. Sure, the production is less "necro" and cleaner, you can hear the various instruments better but a Stormblast 2005 it is not. The new tracks are nothing more than "intros"... ambient tracks that Vikernes probably had left over from sessions for the recent albums Belus and Fallen. He could have simply released them as an EP, maybe a 7" instead of rerecording mostly tracks from Burzum with cleaner production and slapping them on there. Having been wrong before about rerecordings of seminal black metal albums, I hesitate to call this a "cash grab" by Vikernes, but that's exactly what it feels like. It would have been much more interesting had he varied the material more and included tracks from Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Filosofem (maybe a fresh recording of "Dunkelheit"?) instead of just rerecording the majority of Burzum and two tracks from Det Som Engang Var. Granted the music is an easier listen now as the production is cleaner and feels a lot heavier, less tinny and with much less treble, but not much is very new here. I'd personally be more interested in seeing Emperor rerecord "Wrath of the Tyrant" with cleaner, less "necro" production because let's face it: there's not a lot that can be done to tighten up these songs besides removing a lot of the hissy treble and making the mids and lows more prominent to create a heavier feeling. My guess is that this two disc release in a beautiful gatefold sleeve, was intended for younger listeners and only the most hardcore of Burzum fans (which admittedly I am) but I don't feel that it was truly necessary in the long run.

  18. For a while I've tried to pretend that I did not like Dimmu Borgir. Don't get me wrong, I used to love them as an older teenager because they were my first introduction to truly symphonic black metal. I had the albums Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, Spiritual Black Dimensions, Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, Death Cult Armageddon, and an older album called Stormblast. Stormblast quickly became my favorite because I existed in a phase where being kvlt and tr00 was all that mattered in my circle of black metal dork friends. While Dimmu Borgir was routinely mocked in this group after Bam Margera began using their music in his videos, I defended the kvlt nature of Stormblast. I liked how the keys were pushed to the front, swallowing the guitars completely, how the album was in Norwegian compared to their later English offerings with silly, flowery lyrics that often didn't make sense, and the overall production and tone of the original album. Which is why I was completely devastated when they rerecorded it in 2005, and figured that it was a shallow and cynical cash grab that was forced on behalf of Nuclear Blast, and I quickly became angry at Nuclear Blast for "making black metal accessible to normies" so to speak. Granted this was in the time where I was collecting CDs instead of vinyl, so I guarded my copy of Stormblast heavily and it was one of the only albums (along with Nokturnal Mortum's discography) to survive the collapse of the roof of the garage I was living in during Hurricane Charley, a hurricane that absolutely demolished my area and turned it into what appeared to be a war zone. When I started collecting vinyl, I began looking for a copy of Stormblast to no avail. The cheapest copies I could find were purple vinyl rereleases from 2011 for $155 and I am willing to pay ridiculous amounts for single discs, but not almost $200 when shipping is factored in. So I went without. Until today, when I went down to the record store and noticed that a copy of Stormblast was available... but with one small problem: it was that cursed, goddamned cash grab rerecording from 2005. I was hesitant about using my store credit from trading in some records to pick it up but reasoned that I could not spend actual money on it, listen to it once, make fun of it and Dimmu Borgir for "selling out" and then slap it up for sale in my pop-up record store and make a quick $20 off some dumb kid who thought he was cool. Keep in mind I had been hating on this album for fifteen years and had never listened to a single track off of it, because the general consensus was that Dimmu Borgir rerecorded the album to make it more accessible to Hot Topic teens who couldn't handle the kvlt and tr00 nature of the original's production. So I used some of my store credit and grabbed it up. Quietly and sheepishly from the shop owner who is just happy that someone under the age of 60 is in his shop, infusing it with current records and grabbing up the pithy offering og metal that his distributor has made accessible to him (we had a long conversation about this today: He wants to stock the shop with way more black and death metal, but his distributor says that nothing is ever available, so he gets what he can and hopes for the best. So far I have bought 3 Burzum albums from him, 2 Emperor albums, and now 2 Dimmu Borgir discs, and this keeps him attempting to bring in more metal because he knows "it's what sells") And now I realize just what a prejudiced, moronic, stuck-in-the-past asshole I truly am. This is a great album. It's everything I liked about the original Stormblast but with much better production value. The guitars are full and no longer tinny or pushed to the back, so it sounds like a proper metal album. The synth and keyboard work is more lush and filled out, giving the album a higher symphonic quality than even my previous "favorite" post-Stormblast DB album "Spiritual Black Dimensions" (which I bought the other day). It's now possible to hear this album the way that the band wanted it to be heard, but lacked the budget to do the first time around. It's heavy af, much heavier than Spiritual Black Dimensions or Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia. It has a very Death Cult Armageddon feel to it in terms of production without compromising the fact that it's easily their best work remastered and rerecorded in the way they can be proud of. While I previously thought that the original recording of Stormblast was fine, I don't think that I could now justify spending money on a pressing of the original album because I have this one. Oh and it came with a bonus 7" with two additional, until now unreleased songs on it. The cover no longer says "Stormblast 2005", just "Stormblast" so it's obvious that they want this to be the official version of their amazing second full length album & I agree. I know all the songs on here like the back of my own hand and to say that they sound better and more like what I would expect from Dimmu Borgir post Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is an understatement. I'm actually finding myself liking this version of the album much better than the original and that's because I'm 35 and no longer care about being "kvlt" or "tr00" because I have absolutely nothing to prove to any other human being anymore. So in short, I feel bad that I shit on this album as a "sell out project" for as long as I did, because at 35, I really like it a lot and it's probably the best album that Dimmu Borgir has done. All of the melodies are the same, it still gives me that dark feeling of October 2003 (when I got the original CD) and just generally feels less like a really good demo and more of what the band is capable of producing. Granted I stopped fucking with Dimmu Borgir for a long time because of their association with Bam Margera (who I personally despise) but I am mature enough now to say that this was juvenile, prejudiced, and that I was wrong. There's absolutely nothing wrong with listening to Dimmu Borgir. They've done a lot to give black metal a wider recognition beyond that of darkened bedrooms of teenage satanic dabblers and garage practice spaces in the suburbs. I should not have judged them so harshly just for appearing with a specific celebrity. I have returned to appreciating the artistic merits of this band because of this rerecording and will never say another unkind word about them. Maybe I just grew up and realized that it's ok to like what you like, that's also a possibility.
  19. So the Under the Black Sun (UTBS) festival is celebrating it's 20th anniversary this year and it's my third time to be there. It's a pure black metal festival with only around 1,000 people, great atmosphere and everything you would want from a black metal festival. Unfortunately the location where the festival took place for the last 12 years is not available anymore (and it's a shame because it was nothing less than brilliant), but I'm nevertheless looking forward to going there tomorrow. It just feels like some kind of "home sweet home" for black metal. Following bands are playing this year: ANGANTYR ARKONA BALMOG BEATEN VICTORIOUSES BESATT CHOTZAE CORPUS CHRISTII CRIMSON MOON Cryfemal Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult Darkmoon Warrior ENGULFED EVIL SPIRIT Hetroertzen IN THE WOODS ... 23. Hello everyone. I am new to this forum (and forum positing in general) I've been listening to bands like nokturnal mortum, emperor, shylmagoghnar etc - along with some less "black" metal bands on and off for over a decade. nokturnal mortum and emperor are life long loves of mine in particular. I had a death metal phase for a while too - gorotted, gorgasm, dying fetus, pig destroyer, black dahlia murder, etc... Whereas I think my own relationship with death metal was a reflection of a certain time in my life (I don't enjoy it so much as I used to) - black metal seems to have a timeless quality (at least to me). I've been wanting to get into art for a few years.. but have kind of hesitated.. now I am beginning to think I should just ease my way into it and let it grow naturally. I have decided to start making atmospheric black metal. I am not yet a musician.. I cannot play a single instrument.. but in the true tradition of black metal (at least what I understand it to be) - I'm going to start with whatever resources I have (I own an acoustic guitar and have access to music making software) - and go from there. I am hoping there might be some people on this forum who could offer me some tips. I want to buy an electric guitar eventually. Maybe even a drum kit in the future too (when my finance allows - though for the meantime I can use a drum machine). I was thinking I would start by getting to know the guitar via my acoustic. I guess my question is, in terms of learning to play the acoustic, what genre best translates to that classic "atmospheric black metal" sound that we hear? and which ones best translate when moved over to electric? If that makes sense. I have played around a little with simple finger picking exercises.. but knowing which genres would translate best into atmospheric kind of black metal would make a world of difference. And any other advice others have in these regards would also be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks to anyone who comments. Tony
  24. hails just joined but very excited to be here and to meet new people with common interests. my favorite genres of metal are black metal, doom metal and death metal
