I'm sort of a mixture between the two. I am aware of scale and chord theory, and I know how they work together, but I don't sit down and write a riff using theory, I just play the guitar. I use the theory to know which notes work together, but beyond that I just play till it sounds good.
Some of the stuff by Blue Stahli and Celldweller could be considered industrial, but i dunno. You like KMFDM? Atari Teenage Riot's sort of metal, but its more punky than metal. Filter, Gravity Kills and Stabbing Westward are pretty good, as well as Gary Numan's new albums and some of Kreator's stuff.
I like cyberpunk shit, William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, etc... I also love Tolkien, Lord of the Rings. As well as gothic fiction, Dracula, Picture of Dorian Gray and so forth
