  1. Re: Neurosis Any room for opinions in that little box of yours? They were a pioneering sludge band, sludge being doom + hardcore, and while they're more on the atmospheric side, I don't think you could seperate them from either metal or hardcore as such. To combine Swans artistic atmosphere with the visceral nature of sludge is what makes them so great, some may not get that, but it's definitely no reason for disrespect.
  2. Re: Extreme Doom EHG were early sludge, but one of the most hardcore and upbeat among their peers, so calling them more extreme in terms of slowness seems odd. Their lyrics were certainly extreme, as well as the vocals, but not the riffs. Great band though.
  3. Re: Up Coming DOOM Releases Things change, and I could really use some more creepy ass black/doom...
  4. Re: Suggested bands? NTNR's reason for the division seems to solely implicate trad fans as the instigators, but as I said in my post, many extreme doom fans will talk down on trad doom as being "just classic/hippie rock" or "nothing more than Sabbath worship". It comes from both sides and is absurd, if slow and heavy shalt be the whole of the law, who gives a shit about the specifics?
  5. Re: Funeral Doom I disagree, Skepticism are at the forefront of the genre not just because of being there at the start, but also because of their immense songwriting skills. Stream From the Heavens is totally alien sounding and still unique to this day. Evoken aren't pure funeral, but conjure the same atmosphere with proto funeral techniques ala dISEMBOWELMENT and Thergothon and a heavy as fuck doom/death base.
  6. Re: Septicflesh That's what I hear, hoping I can get ahold of them without breaking the bank...
  7. Re: I'm starting to like it here. Seems cool so far, been on a few forums, all of which started well, got great, and then either were overrun by trolls and idiots, became overly pretentious and driven by idiotic "kvlt" types, or were inexplicably shut down. Currently on one other forum, but traffic is limited.
  8. Re: Best live show? Best live bands I've seen: Suffocation Immolation Nazxul Celtic Frost Napalm Death Candlemass
  9. Re: What bands do you want to see live? Two years ago was probably the best lineup they've had, but this year is close. Bethlehem, Winter, Unanimated, Godflesh, Electric Wizard, don't have the lineup in front of me, but it looks quite good.
  10. Re: Black Metal Finland has great black metal, death metal, grindcore, and extreme doom, an excellent country for metal in general. Ugra Karma is my favorite Finn BM album, probably followed by Drawing Down the Moon and any of Horna's many greats, but Baptism is also awesome. Not familiar with Sagreligious Impalement, I would assume they're a bit more bestial sounding?
  11. Re: Black Metal I appreciate the compliment. I love Scandinavian black metal as much as the next guy, I just get sick of it being the only focus for most, and black metal from other countries tend to represent far different sounds and takes on the genre than the distinct Norwegian, Swedish, or Finnish sounds. Especially right at the bridge between the first and second wave, there was great stuff coming from EVERYWHERE and it was all pretty unique sounding for the most part.
  12. Re: Who are your current top 5 bands? My current top 5 (not all time): Autopsy Blut Aus Nord Mayhem Bolt Thrower Bethlehem
  13. Re: best thrash album Tough to pick a clear favorite, but Coroner's Punishment for Decadence, Sabbat's Dreamweaver, Morbid Saint's Spectrum of Death, Dark Angel's Darkness Descends, and Sepultura's Schizophrenia are all up there for me.
  14. Re: Neurosis Neurosis is great. They don't really have have much doom in their sound, but they are intense and harrowing in a similar fashion to many sludge bands. Another band that grows and evolves, but keep a sound that is unique to them despite many attemts to imitate it.
  15. Re: Extreme Doom Love Burning Witch, still need to get Khanate's debut. Not familiar with much otherwise, but EHG and Noothgrush aren't anywhere near as slow and extreme as the other bands mentioned.
  16. Re: Funeral Doom Some of the newer, more melodic acts like Shape of Despair and Ahab are great, but I like the otherworldly feel of Skepticism, Thergothon, Worship, Esoteric, Evoken, Hierophant/Catacombs, a bit better. Funeral doom is awesome, with an atmosphere unlike any other form of music.
  17. Re: Candlemass Epicus is their best, but Nightfall is so close it's unreal. It takes a special band to release a masterpiece of that caliber, let alone 2 with 2 different vocalists. Brilliant band, one of the best metal acts out there, doom or otherwise.
  18. Re: Suggested bands? Any reason why nobody has brought up Trouble yet? Psalm 9 and The Skull are classic doom metal, some of the best in the genre. Not sure why there has to be so much division between trad doom and extreme doom, there's plenty of great stuff on both sides without having to claim that it's a "Sabbath ripoff" or "just slow death metal". I love albums all over the doom spectrum, though admittedly I'm not the biggest drone fan. My favorite bands from over the doom spectrum are Katatonia (when they were actually a doom band), Thergothon, Skepticism, Unholy, Anathema, Trouble, Cathedral, Black Sabbath (doom for most of the Ozzy era), Candlemass, Eyehategod, Burning Witch, Electric Wizard, Esoteric, Evoken, dISEMBOWELMENT, Worship, etc...
  19. Re: Up Coming DOOM Releases Looking forward to new Esoteric. Wonder if Unholy will do another album now that they're (at least temporarily) reunited?
  20. Re: Disembowelment!!! Evoken is really the only band to recreate their unique atmosphere. Even then, they're still quite different, but both excellent bands. Transcendence is one of my favorite albums ever.
  21. Re: Black Metal Big black metal fan, especially the first wave and the early second wave. Really been focusing more on non-Scandinavian BM lately, especially Sigh, Necromantia, Mortuary Drape, Necrodeath, Master's Hammer, Blut Aus Nord (obviously), Tormentor, Havohej, etc...
  22. Re: Dimmu Borgir! Much like Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir aren't really black metal anymore. They're not really worthy of either the hatred or the accolades they receive from both sides, they're overrated and don't deserve the attention they get, but they aren't a bad band. The old stuff is the best, just like most things...
  23. Re: enslaved Even after having their demos released on the same split, I wouldn't really say that Satyricon sounds like Enslaved. I love everything they've done (not that I don't like Satyricon), they're one of my very favorite bands. They've continuously reinvented themselves over the years, and the only slight slump they faced was not really modifying the formula after Isa as they had been doing all along. The new album is right back on track, being both uniquely Enslaved and different from anything they've done before, which would make a special band by itself, nevermid how fucking good they are at it.
  24. Re: Samael Switzerland doesn't have many good bands, except, ya know, Celtic Frost and Coroner. Only the most influential extreme metal band of all time and one of the best thrash bands to walk the face of the earth, no big deal. Samael is awesome, Ceremony of Opposites and Blood Ritual are absolute black metal classics that shouldn't be absent from any fan of the genre's collection. Passage is also cool, and to a lesser extent the albums that followed it. Great band, glad to see them brought up.
  25. Re: Cradle of Filth I like all of their stuff, but they haven't really been black metal for some time. The influence is still there, and even in their death metal days, the gothic influence was there, so they've really just shifted focus over the years. That being said, I don't think they'll ever top Vempire or Dusk.
