  1. Metallica were arguably my into to metal as well, heard Enter Sandman on the radio and thought "well geez, if this is what metal music sounds like it's nowhere near as goofy as I imagined." - and here I am today listening to dignified bands like Amaranthe, Archspire, Mr. Bungle and Volbeat...

That's weird, I've heard that the later games in the series are some of the easier fighters to pick up. My friend certainly shills pretty heavily for them. I've only ever played Super Smash Brothers Project M as far as fighters go. It's a great modification of Brawl that more or less fixes all of its mistakes. Got reasonably good at it but my friends are better, perhaps because they drill movement and combos and I couldn't be bothered.
  3. "Flesh Eater" by Crypted. Promising young fellas from Chennai in India, I'd like to hear a full debut from them. I love the catchy drums on this one. Even if the middle of the track gets repetitive, the song still has some recent variation and the riff 30 seconds in is absolutely awesome.
  4. A reading from the Book of Heavy Metal, Chapter 7 verse 3-6. "It was at the twelfth hour, around midday that Ghouly was seen to emerge from the dwelling; and upon her egress the beams were found to reflect from her visage and pierce the clouds. And Helios was afflicted with blindness, and he was laid up for a time on medical leave. Thus it was that the heavens were overcast on the outskirts of San Fran in the land of Cali, for seven days and seven nights. And amongst the Katatonia fans there was much rejoicing."
  5. Canadian tech-thrash outfit Droid deserve mention, if you're at all into Vektor these guys are well worth checking out. https://droidcanada.bandcamp.com/album/terrestrial-mutations
  6. @RelentlessOblivion I'm pleased to hear things are improving somewhat for you and that you've been able to maintain willpower with such consistency. I do realize that makes me sound like a blowhard but that is my assessment from what I've read most recently. I took the general GRE to get into an international relations program, I've got about six or seven I want to enter. Planning on taking it again since I think I could improve my quantitative score. As for food - well, it was good enough to warrant Cheesecake Factory, which somewhat compensated for my having eaten only a couple pizza rolls beforehand.

Interesting. You ever play Melty Blood or Guilty Gear Xrd? I love the art style for the latter game but apparently it's one of the most complex fighters on the market.
  8. first - an unassuming sentiment that became ubiquitous and remained a well-studied phenomenon well after its obselescence fake and gay - the predecessor to the false even-handedness practiced by poorly-informed lazy blowhards across the political spectrum that now constitutes a fundamental paradigm of discourse on all news sites Hey guys I Have found link to Avengers 5 the Bloom Brightens you can watch here https://www.obviousscam.ru/watch/youcredulousnitwit/vid.mp4_wOLolOloLLhuUeHUEHhuehehUEHU3H3 - a sentiment formed hand-in-glove with globalization that facilitated the expansion of digital discourse to include overambitious third-world con men
  9. Took the GRE and did OK, so I'm going out to eat with a couple friends this evening.
  10. Definitely sounds like my kinda thing. ^ Also both of those albums kick ass.
  11. I mean if it's anything like Nucleus or that Contrarian you recommended I can dig it. Sounds fine so far.
  12. I liked IDP and TSOP is OK. Haven't liked much of anything else, so on balance I wouldn't say I like Death. As for originators, I coulda put either Atheist or Pestilence on there but I don't know that either are particularly prolific, especially not Atheist. I also wanted to acknowledge the ubiquity of the wank school of tech-death for which I think Mr. Sucmiez is indirectly responsible (much as I hate it), hence Negrophagist.
  13. I figured! It's a great comic but I'd imagine you almost feel like hiding it from a kid that age in case they get any ideas from the guy.
  14. He dae no' eat, nor dae he sleep; and feeds he only on the black-tar heroin o' the living. His imposing keep may be found in the outskirts of Dundee near a drainage ditch, he dunnae keep a moat so much as a ring of dilapidated cars guarded by rottweilers.
  15. Man, I first heard the phrase "bouncing off the walls" during a church service in Houston when I was about 11 or something and it was all I could do not to issue a resonant guffaw through the sanctuary. The mental image of a toddler just rocketing about a bedroom like a squash ball turned out surprisingly evocative, something of the Calvin and Hobbes to it.
  16. "Maniacal Renderings" by Jon Oliva, a man whose metal is so heavy it caused him to gain a good 300 pounds over the course of his career. No pop star could look and dress the way he does and get as much adulation...gotta love a man who'll literally wear a McDonald's shirt to an interview.
  17. One guy on Facebook used the phrase "slugfuck pacing" which certainly gave me a chuckle. Definitely gotta integrate that one into my vocabulary.
  18. Tech-death: Death Nile Necrophagist Suffocation Not that I like any of them that much. If I could make a big 4 list synthesizing sustained quality, longevity and success it'd probably be: Gigan Gorguts Gorod Wormed
  19. "Mechanical Spin Phenomena" by Mnemic. Unfortunately I don't have a Monster and Cheetos to accompany this. If only this vocalist sounded older than 24...
  20. Can't say I really get the whole 'unhear' thing, the only time I get that feeling is with really obnoxious pop songs, particularly ones with an ethos I hate. I guess I wish I'd not heard Pyramaze after "Legend of the Bone Carver" since that's their last really good album. The band have some phenomenal potential but they're utterly wasting it. Wish I'd never heard anything by Into Eternity (except maybe "Buried In Oblivion"), since they're good on paper but I just never listen to them anymore for whatever reason. Same goes for Holy Blood's "Waves Are Dancing". Bought t-shirts for both of those bands too...
  21. BAN and NTNR like some, but they've got a better tolerance for monotony than me and different sonic tastes besides. Bongripper and Mudbath are pretty close but they just drone on for too damn long without evolving their songs.
  22. Snowy Shaw and Jon Oliva's Pain work pretty well.
  23. Usually my temptation is to say it's uptempo or in the words of absentee member AkselJ "has more notes". Obviously you're then confronted with doom metal. To be honest, my general understanding is that it's just more intense in what it sets out to do. Might be useful to ask people what they don't like about metal, and the answer I'd say is just that it's loud. Sure, you get the more contemplative fiddly kinda guys like Fleurety or Spiral Architect, but even then the quiet aspect is more a trick of production. I do think it comes down to the loudness and pitch, as other people have stated, because the only other genres that are comparable in this regard are probably electronic - i.e., industrial, dubstep or maybe trap. These genres, however, can be immediately distinguished from metal by nature, so that's not a problem. So then, the difference between metal and rock. I might put it down to the use of palm-muted riffs. It's not like there's no use of palm muting in rock, but it's far more common in most metal music. Doom metal comes up again...well, technically if you speed doom metal up enough it either resembles other metal or perhaps rock, depending on the production. Las Cruces are pretty close to being a rock band even though they're pretty strongly doom. I do think metal does also tend to go more for the flamboyant and/or oblique than a melody that's memorable by popular standards, so that might be worth taking into account.
