Obsidian's Achievements

  1. Re: Behexen I was referring to the style of Black Metal fitting in with the Orthodox trend, rather than their actual beliefs.
  2. Re: Behexen I have "My Soul For His Glory". If I'm in a Behexen kinda mood, that's not the album I reach for though. I don't like that they've gone for the Orthodox Black Metal sound done by bands like Ondskapt and Deathspell Omega. "By The Blessing Of Satan" really stood out, but to me, "My Soul..." doesn't.
  3. Re: Morbid Angel I heard the new one on Youtube, and while it sucks in general and there are some pathetic excuses for songs on there, at least it has the odd half-decent riff that you can actually hear. "Heretic" is just a sludgy mess with no redeeming features. Not a single good riff can be found. It's utter garbage.
  4. Re: Christian Black Metal Call it Unblack Metal, so that we can avoid it and you can have you own thing, if you insist on listening to it, but I stand by my statement that there is no such thing as christian Black Metal. It's a contradiction in terms.
  5. Re: Tool......Progressive or Alternative?? Tool are just alternative rock as far as I'm concerned. I can't see what they do that one would class them as Metal. I don't find them particulary progressive at all really, or technical for that matter.
  6. Re: Opeth "Orchid" is my favourite album of all time, by anyone. Perfection. "Still Life" is close, and I really love the aothers up to and including "Blackwater Park". They definately lost their way after that album, although "Damnation" was fantastic. I think they dumbed down a bit for "Deliverance" (probably why it's so popular) and "Ghost Reveries", which eventually grew on me. I didn't like "Watershed" at all. There were hardly any songs - just a collection of ideas, which was very frustrating. The cover of "Bridge Of Sighs" was by far the standout track for me. I'm glad they are going in a pure Prog direction because I don't feel they have any more to offer Metal. I think the new album will have the passion that the last one severly lacked because Mikael Akerfeldt will be playing the music he really loves the most. I wish their involvement with that hippy twat Steve Wilson had never happened - it was all downhill from there.
  7. Re: lamb of god Lamb Of God have absolutely nothing to do with, or in common with Death Metal, other than the fact that both have guitars, bass, drums and vocals.
  8. Re: Morbid Angel The backlash is because of the extremely poor new album. But while it is crap, Morbid Angel have been very poor for some time now. I don't think they've done anything worthwhile since "Domination". the first 3 albums are manditory for everyone who considers themselves a Metalhead. My personal favourite is "Blessed Are The Sick". As far as I'm concerned, they died when David Vincent left the band.
  9. Re: Suggested bands? My definition of Doom appears to be somewhat at odds to most peoples. As far as I'm concerned, Doom needs to be slow, heavy and crushing. So basically, Doom/Death and Funeral Doom. Among the best are Thergothon, Evoken, Wormphlegm, Ataraxie, Worship, Tyranny, Catacombs, Esoteric, Morgion, Ordog, Shape Of Despair, Indesinence, Disembowelment (although that is more doomy Death Metal). Anathema's early stuff, up to and including "The Silent Enigma" is Doom, but all their stuff is fantastic. My Dying Bride have a big slice of goth in their Doom, so if you don't mind that, "Turn Loose The Swans" is the best place to start. Also check out the Loss EP, Celestial Season's first 2 full lengths, Cemetary Of Scream's debut, perhaps "Dawning" by Mindrot, "O Solitude" by Pantheist, as well as Woods Of Belial,Wraith Of The Ropes, Ahab, Winter, Asunder, Desire, Doom:vs, Ghast, Hierophant, Mar De Grises, Paramaecium, Skepticism. That should be a good start. The common definition of Doom appears to be traditional heavy metal to me. I can't see what makes St Vitus, Candlemass or Pentagram Doom. I also don't see what Stoner has to do with Doom either.
  10. Re: Christian Black Metal There is no such thing as christian Black Metal. Christians and sheep of other faiths should stay clear of Extreme Metal if they feel it's an affront to them. I certainly find the existance of these bands offensive.
  11. Re: enslaved I love their mid-period progressive albums the most. "Mardraum" is probably my favourite, closely followed by "Monumension" and "Below The Lights". Their early stuff was a bit hit and miss for me. I love "Frost" and "Vikingligr Veldi" are great too, but the next two are quite different and not particularly great. "Isa" is my least favourite though. I hated the change of direction away from progressive music into Prog Rock. To me it sounds like modern day Satyricon and that is not a good thing. However they are slowly getting back on track. "Ruun" was slightly better, while "Vertebrae" was a lot better. The last one is pretty good too, although there are a few too many ideas ripped of from Opeth, which is unnecessary.
  12. Re: Behexen "By The Blessing Of Satan" is a fantastc album. The production is so raw and powerful. If fact, I can't think of another Black Metal album that rivals it in terms of sheer ferocity. The Split with Horna is also very good. I'm not too keen on "My Soul For His Glory" - it sounds a little too Orthodox and doesn't come across as passionate as the aforementioned. I've never heard "Ritual Satanum". I bought it off Ebay a few years ago but the purchaser ripped me off, and I never bothered getting it again for some reason. A couple of years ago, they supported Archgoat in London and their guitarist tried to pull my wife (then-girlfriend). Check out Sargeist if you haven't already. The band is made up of members of Behexen and Horna. Oh, and Finland, for the most part, fucking RULES!

    IMMORTAL

Re: IMMORTAL For me, the only 2 albums I really love are "Pure Holocaust" and "Battles In The North". I also think those are the only albums that totally embody the Black Metal spirit, despite the fairytale lyrics. "Diabolocal Fullmoon Mysticism" just sounds like a Bathory tribute, and I think they put a little too much Death Metal into "Blizzard Beasts". I thought "At The Heart Of Winter" was compitant and enjoyable, but not really very Black Metal anymore. The fact that this is the album when the mainstream Metal community first being interested in Immortal is testimony to this. Off course, Immortal have always had ridiculous aesthetics, but they took it to the extreme with "At The Heart Of Winter", which I think helped spread their name even more than their music at the time - very clever marketing, especially for guys who don't take themselves too seriously. "Damned In Black" was a little worse, musically, but not bad. " I didn't like "Sons Of Northern Darkness" though - it just sounds too safe. This is probably why it's often regarded as their best album. I've not bothered checking out the last album.
