Nobody who remembers your old avatar is gonna buy this for a second. You're a fruit who dressed as a mammal. We all know it.

But I'm actually on the other side of this argument when it comes to genre labels. People struggle to figure out what to call bands on the edges of different styles, and maybe they settle on something for a while, and then more stuff happens and the boundaries need to be revisited. It's not "redefining history" in the way you're trying to do when you pretend you never pretended you were an orca, it's just (mostly) trying to integrate new information in a way that makes sense.

Oh shit, I was wondering where the cucumber guy went.

I do like Leviathan a bunch and agree. For the time it came out, it was groundbreaking and quite the departure from what other "prog metal" bands were delivering. Mastodon always gives you what you expect but not always the way you expected it. I can't say I dislike anything they've done. And they're such a tight band. Hearing a CD is one thing, but seeing them live really drives home how good they are. I've seen them 3 times in drastically different venues and it's always spot on. No need for a live album because they sound exactly like the CD. Something fairly rare and I've only seen a handful of acts that can manage that: our beloved Rush, the Cure, Emperor, and Mercyful Fate.

Not as crazy about the latest album, but it's good. Once More Round the Sun is usually my go to because it's a bit of an outlier in the discography and I just jam the shit out of it whenever the mood strikes. The only one I don't revisit often is The Hunter, but only because I didn't have it which I recently corrected.

Just bought Tix to see them again in May with Gojira.

Mastodon are such a solid outfit. I concur.

  3. You know, I've never delved into this genre. Don't know what has been stopping me from doing so really. There's bound to be some fantastic bands out there, guess I'll have to look for them.

As for it being a fad, that may not be the case for much longer. Would be interesting to see it evolve.

For st anger. Going in with no expectations helped. I switched it off on last track but I was amazed I got that far and enjoyed it overall even with those drums and it's bit repetitive. It's definitely worth another listen. Only one mind you. It was background music when I played it as I was doing some work. Maybe this helped.

I will have to hear this black Sabbath album. I've heard some others say they like his vocals. It's difficult to follow Ozzy, Dio, Ian gillen. All legendary imo.

It's hard going in with zero expectations after they released such classics, but I'll take you up on that and give you my thoughts when I can :)

No disrespect to Tony Martin but he cannot match the talent of his predecessors. He does try, though you'll be begging for anyone other than him on the album.

I'd forgotten about that one. It's called forbidden for a reason. 😉 Hopefully it improves. Let me know how you like 2nd half of album

I listened other day to st anger by Mettalica with zero expectations and I must say I liked it alot more than I was expecting. It was bit repetitive and some songs a bit long but I liked the energy. I used to hate that album. Now I appreciate the energy which reminded me of there glory days of thrash. There were punk, groove metal, nu metal bits but I still liked it somewhat

Forbidden is definitely the correct word to describe it! It gets worse during the second half, dear lord. Tony Martin's vocals lack finesse. They sound weak on every song which is a crying shame. Ozzy had a booming voice that took control of each track, this is more power ballad than metal.

There's one decent song (Shaking Off the Chains) but everything else is filler. A terrible album indeed. Not even Tommy Iommi could salvage it.

As for St Anger, I found it to be garbage. Only lasted four songs before giving up, but you've convinced me to give it another shot. Surely it has good parts right?
