So what you're saying is that JT is the only one around here with any decent taste? Gotcha!

NP: Evil Invaders - Feed Me Violence.

Great minds think alike, my friend!  Fantastic choice with Evil Invaders, by the way.  The guitar work is phenomenal on all of their albums, which I own.

    Slackjaw - "Vicious Cycle"

    Some great southern groove here!

Oof. Well I guess we won't have to wonder why these Nashvillians' career never went anywhere. Only maybe JT could possibly love something like this because they're good ole southern boys like him.

NP: Necroracle - Arcane Impious Sorceries, black/death Spain. This is more my speed.

I'm playing that Temple of Brutality album as we speak!  Man, I love this stuff.

These Belgians did an album in 2018 called Blood Oath that I really loved. Played the shit out of it. I missed that they'd put out a follow-up in 2021 until I heard this new one a couple of months ago. Still love the debut, but neither of the two subsequent releases do anything at all for me. Booooooring. I hate when this happens, but it happens all the time, which I why I have no band loyalty. In my world you're only as good as your last album or two. And two shitty albums in a row means you're effectively dead to me.

Rituals of the Dead Hand - Blood Oath, black/doom 2018 Belgium

Those 3 bands sound totally different to me, so I'm not sure which vein you'd be referring to there JT. That one Iron Monkey album (Our Problem) is so badass though, might have to hit that one later. Should probably see if they have any others that are any good.

Love that Iron Monkey album!  I should have stated that a bit differently and said those three bands are all influences on Swamp Coffin.  Crowbar is untouchable for me, but Swamp Coffin has been a fantastic discovery over the last couple of days!

Yeah I wasn't quite on board with Psychosis but Inflikted was a good album.

NP: Death - Scream Bloody Gore

Very true!  And another great choice with the legendary Death.  Not a single bad album in their discography, which was cut way too short with Chuck's untimely death.

Wode - Burn In Many Mirrors, Manchester UK 2021, haven't listened to this since the month it came out 3 years ago. It's not a bad album, it just pales in comparison to the first two which were pretty formidable and superior.

Crowbar - Sonic Excess in its Purest Form, NOLA 2001. The only Crowbar album I've ever bought.

Dude! We'll be needing to see those Kirkstein snaps forthwith bro. Forth-motherfucking-with!

Didn't realize Exhorder was your album of the year JT. Thought it would have been Pweest. Heavy rotation down there in Carolina eh? Hope my earlier comments about Omnium didn't hurt your feelings too deeply.

Seems to me though when all you have left of a 30+ year old band that was dormant for many years is the vocalist, and your style has changed that much from where you started, you can't even really consider it Exhorder anymore. They should definitely change their name.

How's it going, my friend?!  Oh yes, the new Judas Priest will be hard to beat for my album of the year.  Exhorder is really good, but not album of the year for me.  The only other competitor I anticipate as of now is the new Accept album, "Humanoid", due out April 26.  We'll see how it goes!

I'll see if my technologically challenged self can figure out how to post my pics with Mr. Windstein as soon as I can!  What an incredible show it was.  I believe there were around 500 people or so, over in the state capital of Raleigh.  Really cool that you bought "Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form"!  That album is in my top 5 of their catalog - truly underrated.  My favorite Crowbar album tends to flip-flop between "Broken Glass" (1996) and "Odd Fellows Rest" (1998), but "Symmetry in Black" (2014) and the newest album, "Zero and Below" (2022) give them both a run for their money.  There's not a single weak album in the Crowbar discography, and truthfully, very few weak moments in general.  Love them to death and will be playing through their albums on my commute over the next few days!

I've tried a number of times and it just doesn't hold anything memorable for me. There's a few reasonable riffs but the lyrics and songs as a whole just aren't something I'd want to go back to like I do the first two albums.

Fair enough!  Those first two albums are classics for sure.

Oof. You're gonna hate me (as if, you are incapable of hate in your heart), that Crowbar played at the same local pub where I saw Verminthrone last Monday and I didn't go! I was keen to see the local opening band Abraxian but, since I don't know Crowbar at all, the ticket price was just a little too much to be worth it.

Kind of regret it, but I'll get over it.

I definitely don't hate you, my metal brother!  I am, however, bummed to hear that you didn't get to see Crowbar.  I saw them live back in February of 2019 and got to have a brief conversation with founder and front man Kirk Windstein before the show.  I asked his wife, Robin, if she would mind snapping a couple of pics of me and Kirk, and she graciously agreed even though she was also trying to work the merchandise table.

Kirk was very cool to me and allowed me to get a couple of pics with him.  I've got them stored in the cloud as we speak, now 5 years later.

I'd highly recommend checking out Crowbar, especially if you're into sludge at all.  They've got some great groove to their sound as well, and they're the heaviest band I've ever heard.  At the show, while the guys were doing a quick sound check before their set, I could literally feel it in my teeth, the sounds was so incredibly heavy.  Spanning from their debut album, "Obedience Thru Suffering" (1991) to the present day, they currently have 12 albums in their catalog. I've heard that Down is planning to release their first new material in a decade, and I believe Kirk is playing with them right now.  But I'm hoping Crowbar will give us another couple of albums before they call it a day!

I wouldn't have called Exhorder offensive but it's definitely nothing on their first two. I suppose that has something to do with there only being one original member left and he wasn't a main song writer of those first two I believe. I haven't bothered to watch any of their current live shows but I'd be surprised if they had whatever it was they had in the 90's.

Oh man, I'm really enjoying the new Exhorder album, "Defectum Omnium"!  Kyle Thomas is a fantastic vocalist, and the album has an enjoyable quality all the way through.  It'll definitely be getting heavy rotation for me.

On Saturday my flatmates were watching rugby. I set up a new audio interface and switched to Windows 11 to solve some problems it was having. Finally started working. I then went to a gig in the evening, but not quite worth reporting. A local band Verminthrone, (The Cull | Verminthrone (bandcamp.com)) which sounds like it would be black metal, but closer to Pantera. Meat and potatoes. Decent. The opening band was Electric Wizard worship (Industrial Nightmare | Voidlurker (bandcamp.com)) but just a little too simple for me. The guitarist lost his pick before the last song and played with a credit card. You couldn't tell the difference. My favourite part was the knob twiddling guitar effects feedback over drum and bass that they finished with. That was pretty cool.

Sunday was fairly uneventful. Played mini-golf. Point being, I found occasion to write something on this here forums.

Oh, big name drop, on Friday night I had quite a long chat with Karl Sanders from Nile. It was like we'd been buddies forever. Nice bloke.

I saw your comparison of Verminthrone as being similar to PanterA, and that's all I needed to hear!  Checked them out immediately and I now have "The Cull" in my library.  Fantastic album with sick, heavy groove.  Doesn't get better than that for me!  I also hear some similarities to one of my top 5 bands of all time - the mighty Crowbar!

  9. DragonForce - "Warp Speed Warriors"

I'm a couple of days late on this one, but my favorite power metal band has never disappointed me, so I cannot wait to dive into the brand new album today.  This has been the longest gap between releases of their career - including the time when they changed singers.  The pandemic set them back for sure, but finally, the new slab of majestic melody and speed has arrived!

Only giving electronics work a portion of your attention is not a great idea. I've zapped myself a few times when I wasn't paying attention and I'm sure I'll zap myself again one day and not that many people would care but for my own safety I probably shouldn't give myself the opportunity to feel too many amps through my body.

What I really need is for my wife to go out instead of being home and watching TV, while telling me it's too hot to be outside, then I could crank the stereo up!

Fair point!  Whenever you have the opportunity, I'd be eager to hear your thoughts.  It's a little after 10 p.m. here on the east coast of the U.S., and I'm about to crank up the volume and blast the album once again!

Given Exhorder's last album I am hoping for something with a bit more punch this time. I did listen to the first single they released but I obviously didn't commit it to memory because I feel like I'll be listening to this album blind with no idea what the new sound will be. Slaughter and The Law are still two albums on high rotation in my house.

I like 72 Seasons too, not sure I love it because I haven't listened to it more than a few times, but I do agree with the way you look at such albums.

It's a bit warm here at the moment (36C and still rising) and I was going to go out in the workshop and listen to JP while I do some electrical work but maybe I need to give it full attention.

I'm ashamed to admit this, but I didn't realize Exhorder has a new album coming out!  It's been amazing to have them back on the scene after a 27-year gap between full-length studio releases.  "Mourn the Southern Skies" (2019) still gets heavy rotation for me - I love it to death.

But back to the kings of traditional metal, that trip to the workshop sounds like just what the doctor ordered.  However, if you feel like you could give it more attention in a different setting, then I'd definitely understand that, too.  "Invincible Shield" is a great album - if you don't initially think it's anything special, I'd encourage you to stick with it, because it may take some time to get into it.  Or, at least, that's what happened to me.  But hey, you might end up loving it right away.  Long live the Priest!

  12. I've also listened through:

Exhorder - "Slaughter in the Vatican"

    Exhorder - "The Law"

Yeah, it's tough to tell - still way too early for me to comment on where "Invincible Shield" stands in the catalog, of course.  And honestly, I approach each album as a stand-alone effort, without allowing a comparison to other albums dictate my feelings about it.  Similar to the way I love "72 Seasons" from Metallica - I don't look at it within a context of whether or not it's "Ride the Lightning, Pt. 2".  It's just a great album on its own.

The same goes for "Invincible Shield".  As a rock-solid heavy metal album, it is a fantastic album.  "Crown of Horns" is a true triumph!
