i have recently been doing meditation and mindfulness in genral, and i find burzum ok to meditate with. also, clearing your mind can be fun to do before listening to metal, as i find a clear mind can pick up and take in all aspects of the complex musical structure. dark ambient is also fun to meditate with

Not sure if these questions haven't been posed in other threads, I know the Spotify v CD's one has.
I've lost count of my CD's, the drawers I made was designed to hold about 1000 and they are over 80% full by the look of them. Not all of them are metal, and most of them are just dust collectors these days because I generally don't listen to music in the lounge where the CD player and stereo is. I don't buy vinyl any more because of the outrageous prices here in Oz and because I don't visit too many second hand stores, but everything I have on CD, cassette, and vinyl are all ripped and digital music is generally just easier for me to listen too, because everything these days from the computer to the car, to the phone, even the tractor has either USB or SD and I can put a heap of albums on a single card and listen to it for weeks.

I use every available means to listen to music. I know some of the streaming platforms can cause controversy, but I don't listen to Led Zepplin or Neil Young or CCR etc. enough to purchase their music. So streaming is fine for that stuff (things I don't intend to own but still listen to once in a while). Also convenient for stuff you own but don't have handy (not ripped/not accessible). Otherwise, the CD collection is reasonable. Don't have a firm number as I haven't counted recently. Somewhere around 400. I donated a couple of boxes a few years ago of stuff I didn't want to hang on too in order to thin the herd some. I have a buddy who runs a small local distro and sells used CDs/tapes at merch tables for local shows. He uses it to supplement his income and I didn't need a bunch of stuff taking up space I didn't care about.
That said, I buy CDs over vinyl these days predominantly. Vinyl is just too expensive and I don't have time to listen to the 500+ I already have. 95% of my listening is digital via my home server and phone. That probably won't always be the case, but for now I have enough vinyl. I buy the CD when either 1) it's something I really want a physical copy of, or 2) the price is close enough to the digital download that it makes sense. My only issue with buying CDs is having the time to sit down and rip them to the server.

eternalcrypt gave a Damn to MacabreEternal in Author & Punisher - Krüller (2022)
In niche sub-genres such as drone metal and industrial metal the ideal scenario for me is to have a go-to artist I can really rely on.  I cannot say that I listen to much of anyone else in either genre and so the assured and emotional consistency of Tristan Shone's output in Author & Punisher is a real bonus for me in a world of thousands of artists and much less time than needed to fully explore many of them.  As time has gone on I have discovered two main themes in his work.  Firstly, he gets better with every release.  The maturity he is now able to exhibit on "Krüller" is just so confident that it is obvious in every track on the album; his experience over each passing year and release simply makes him better.  Secondly, as time has gone by I have ceased to be astonished by just his incredible ability to make all manner of alien and horrifically atmospheric noises from whatever ungodly bit of tech he has made with his bare hands.  I am now just as astonished by the emotional tautness of his output that stirs responses in me that I had not thought possible with this type of music.
At this point in his career, Shone is untouchable in terms of not needing to rely solely on the harsh, abrasive and heavy aspects of his music to get his message across.  If there is anyone using textures better than he does on tracks like 'Incinerator' then I damn well demand a recount!  This track in particular is a rollercoaster that goes from broody and sultry onto anger and sadness before giving way to mental torture.  Listen to this album through a couple of times and you will understand that Shone is able operate on multiple levels and can hammer home his message without the need for blunt force every time.  'Centurion' relies on a subtle yet ever-present urgency to press home its threat.  'Maiden Star' operates meanwhile in a whole separate stratosphere with dreamy melodies and blatant rock guitars as its main ingredients.
Whereas previous A&P releases lacked range, on "Krüller" this is not a problem that is even on the horizon.  Without having to go avant-garde or just plain old wacky, album number nine just delivers on every level.  The drone elements are stable without being excessive and the industrial elements play as influences (albeit big influences) that do not rule the roost as such yet the album is still so very industrial at its core but feels so open and varied without disrupting the sense of balance that permeates the record.  The cover of 'Glorybox' by Portishead feels like a huge moment for the album and indeed Shone's career itself.  Taking the elements that make it such a brilliant piece of dreamy trip-hop in the first place, A&P manages to elevate this with his trademark droning, industrial intensity whilst still capturing the heartfelt message at the centre of the track.
"Krüller" is Tristan Shone at his best and is far and away his finest hour.  Able to command enough respect at this stage to have Tool's Justin Chancellor and Danny Carey guest on the album, Shone can use his ever-growing confidence to allow his vocals to shine more as he (consciously) removed much of the trademark distortion that layered them in the past in favour of what to me is a more personal connection.  One of the best finds of 2022 so far.

eternalcrypt given a Damn from Thatguy in Cattle Decapitation - Death Atlas
My first album review was quite a while ago...since then my taste in metal has become varied. i recently bought this album from HMV after listening to the first 3 tracks on youtube. I was blown away, and have recently started listening to the rest of their discography. I stopped myself from listening any further without buying the CD because there's something so great about CDs. it may sound like I'm romanticising inconvenience, but there's something SO GREAT about having them all on your shelf, flicking through your collection and opening up the incredible album art, putting the CD in the player and sometimes reading the little booklet. but were getting off topic here. from the top....
Death Atlas is, an amazing record. A review by RockHard states it is the "ultimate soundtrack to the downfall of mankind", and it really is; The first thing i noticed? "Anthropogenic: end transmission" gives the whole record this sort of cinematic feel. with a pair of decent headphones it sounds like you are inside the lyrics and it builds up the sense of depth and severity before "the geocide" is delivered. listening to radio transmissions of other countries state (in Travis Ryan's words) "our place in the universe" is harrowing and hits closer to home. according to Travis,
“The intro music is a collaboration we did with Riccardo Conforti from a phenomenal band called Void Of Silence from Rome. The transmission is meant to symbolize humanity’s place in the universe. At the end, it cancels out—the End Transmission—because we’ve been destroyed. We had to get clearance from NASA to use the sample that’s in this. It’s the 55 languages of planet Earth, taken from the Golden Record that’s on the Voyager space probe that was sent out in the late ’70s. The lady at NASA was super cool and we got everything cleared. It’s by far the best intro we’ve ever had on an album.”
i just think its a really decent, on topic way to start an album. "the geocide", like the entire album, is a roaring, hurdling pile of death metal at full speed and it sounds amazing. the riffing is legendary and the drums are relentless. vocal transitions are smooth and demonic, with a slight echo, creating the sense there's multiple voices. the Van Halen solos are melodic and the peak of the song. the whole album in my opinion is very atmospheric in the non literal sense; it has a certain "end of everything" vibe around it. the lyrics "fuck the future" don't change my mind..."Be still our bleeding hearts" slow things down and create a thicker, dramatic atmosphere. the guitar sounds almost mournful and apocalyptic, the lyrics "death is part of life" are obviously philosophical. the next song, "Vulturous", slow things down a notch too, but only at times. drumming still relentless, the song picks you up and drops you. the vocals are on point and in tune, none of this random screaming shit, only decent on point growls. the song is sonically a blast and has a lot to offer.
from here on out the album only gets better in my opinion. it slows down at times, thickening up before going quite fast or sometimes re-enforcing this feeling of two planets colliding. the guitar tones and effects placed on them in "times cruel curtain" compared to the drums make the song seem slow and fast at the same time. it carries on into the distance of your headphones, never to be seen again....overall the buildup of songs like "absolute destitute" followed by extreme vocals and those completely ripping guitars is just really effective.
the instruments chime; "sonically" is the key word here.
in conclusion? the last track, "death atlas" sums up the album and is heavy, brutal, and oppressive. its nice to see death metal bands exploring other, relevant topics instead of constantly going on about blood, guts, gore, horror, screaming, eternal damnation, satanism and skull thrones and stuff....since "humanure", Cattle Decapitation have refurbished what modern death metal has to offer and will forever be a gem in the community. the album art, displaying a skeleton with a scythe (grim reaper motif?) crippling under the weight of a destroyed world, whilst watching a sand timer, is symbolic: it shows humanity eventually having to deal with a scorched planet, ridden with climate change and war, they have to do something before time runs out. this is no fantasy themed death metal; its relevant, and a possibility in todays society. its a really great piece of art too, always a bonus as ive never been one for bland album covers in death metal.
i hope this album review was funky enough for you guys, and as i said in my last highly cringy ("im, like, 10 and ive just found metal!") album review, stay brutal 🤘

I love that mental dissonance on MoRT, as alien as it comes across I find my brain tracks it really well.
Have blown the credit card now as discovered a vinyl box set of the 777 trilogy on Debemur Morti, so that's on pre-order now.  Comes with splatter vinyl, a poster, a turntable slipmat and assurance that I am as kvlt at 46 as I ever was at 16!
