  1. Encountering a condescending person is an off-putting experience; there's no doubt about that. However, there is something to be said about the things that people consume or engage; the type of discussions they have; or the individuals with whom they keep company. There is a reason why certain people feel more familiar to you and why certain types of music, like heavy metal, make more sense than others. Personally, I find television offensive, so I don't watch it. Most of the time, when I hear a typical rock song, I hear something under-developed, fanciful, and ultimately boring. This doesn't place me above the people, who enjoy television or rock music, but it also doesn't make it any easier for me to relate to them. And, the point at which people are unable to relate often causes them to draw negative conclusions about the other person, for example, that they're condescending, elitist, or withdrawn. People conclude such things without clearly understanding the behaviors, disposition, and overall state of mind of the other person. Certain extreme metal bands created music that was complex to the point where a comparison with classical music was completely valid; why does that comparison implicitly indicate elitism to you? It seems that you believe the comparison between metal and classical is being drawn for a self-serving reason, when it's simply an observation on two forms of music, which both share the quality that they're complex.
