From what I've heard is you mix vocal fry with almost a exasperated exhale sound. But when I try that I just choke all sound out

Hey, so I've been playing metal for years on my guitar, over the past year or so I started getting into singing. Now for me singing clean and even with a bit of distortion I have no issue (think hard rock grit) but screaming eludes me. I've looked at a million videos and cant grasp the concept of it. I know how to do vocal fry but I cant put it to a scream. Any advice?
