Their classic "new world" concept album based on epic poetry of the American Midwest and Ontario, featuring fan favorite "Gray Winter Day"... timeless.

I have spent a lot of time with this LP. To Fathers Cabin...wow. The album holds up...well it stands strong.

You could find more info about this on an instrument forum, but aside from the looks, the roasted wood will be lighter and resonate differently. I don't know what (if any) tonal effect that difference would have in body wood. All the discussions of this that I've seen have focused on roasting for neck woods, where the process is valued because it apparently also increases stability. I wouldn't think that would be a concern for body woods. I guess the bottom line is, if you really like the color and lighter weight and you can afford the price difference, go for it. Swamp ash can feel a little heavy. But don't be expecting magic unicorns and fairy dust.

forgot to add that this a body for a bass.

I don't mind the weight at all- Some guys say it only matters with a single cut, some say no. idk, im lost and ordered it anyway. got my hands on a set of Thundergun pickups, a thick bridge and a spilt coil neck brick. they are pretty big.

Can't believe I haven't said anything in the Darkthrone thread.

Anyway, what prompted this engagement is the fact that I've just purchased 'The Wind of 666 Black Hearts', which is the Peaceville Records official release of the 'A Blaze in the Northern Sky' and 'Under a Funeral Moon' rehearsal tapes. They're both very full sounding and genuinely worth this official release. I was surprised at the sound quality when I first heard these versions.

It also amazes me that bands like Darkthrone and Mayhem recorded and kept so much material. There is just an unending reservoir of demos, photos, letters etc.

The release also has a very good package with an essay from Fenriz as well as the lyrics for the 'Under the Funeral Moon' material. Of course, we all have the original albums on CD (right... right??), but these versions are really good. They're a little more bass heavy and a little less frostbitten, which gives a new light and weight to the tracks. There are also some excellent photos included that I haven't seen before.

As for Darkthrone at large, I've made my views clear many times on this site, and I don't want to piss people off who are fans of the current material. Suffice to say I left Darkthrone around 1996 and haven't really been able to connect with their Celtic Frost worship/80s era, although I still keep a close eye on them.

For me, I've had some spiritual experiences listening to Darkthrone, including last year when I was in the Tasmanian wilderness listening to 'Under a Funeral Moon' and gazing at a dark sky of a million stars through the trees...

Anyway, here's a shot of my Darkthrone collection which I took today in a flurry of Darkthrone enthusiasm. It's obviously not a huge collection, or in any way complete, but I just realised that I have quite a few things that are worth gathering together for a photo. Apologies for the double-up, as I've posted it in the Collections thread in the Photography sub-thread.

Here is the nekro photo of doom:

Cool cover for sure, and I like how they've incorporated the batwing crosses into the logo. I used to read this magazine back in the day but it was so damn small - hard on the eyes.

Anything interesting in the Necrobutcher interview?

Its still hell on the eyes.

One story I have not heard before- I forgot the guys name but he was around for scene and came up with the guys. He was putting together a band to tour south amer. a remaining member of mayhem was going to be on the tour- Necro found out, told the "band" that he was alright with it BUT if Necro caught wind of any merch being cold or anything remotely related to the band and Deathcrush, he would legally end them.

I had no idea that Mayhem performed that track live.  I will have to see if there is a video of it online.

From what it sounds like, that is exactly what Varg intends to do.  Also, I thought that all of Varg's recent albums were meant to be background music.  I wouldn't say that they do not warrant any spins.  Some tracks on his most recent album were actually really good.

With Varg, I think you have to be in tune with what is going on with him. He is a very interesting human.

Ulver has a great track intro off the 95 release titled Bergtatt @7:55 mark Here

All the early stuff coming out of and around Scandinavian, just blows my mind. I love the mixing of styles, and genres. The countless demo recordings that sound like some guys threw in some random metal lps in mixer and hoped for the best.

  6. Issues #093 Nov/Dec

Wow! Necro aired out a bit more dirty laundry in this issue ! Mayhem hopes to hit the 70 mark for countries toured by the early part of 2020. Morten would like to release a record every three years vs the six year mark or so. Necro will be made into a diamond, after he has passes. The way he said it was kind of odd.  Anyone else pick this issue up ?

Why does the magazine always smell like terror attack mail ?

Varg has a new album coming out?  Where did you hear that?

    on Burzum.org

    23.10.2019
The working title for the next Burzum album is "Thulêan Mysteries" & it has - as the planned song list show - a Thulêan theme. The intention of the album is to be background music for your MYFAROG game session. It might well work for other situations too...
    1. The Sacred Well
    2. The Loss Of A Hero
    3. ForeBears
    4. A Thulêan Perspective
    5. Gathering Of Herbs
    6. Heill Auk Sæll
    7. Jötunnheimr
    8. Spell-Lake Forest
    9. The Ettin Stone Heart
    10. The Great Sleep
    11. The Land Of Thulê
    12. The Lord Of The Dwarves
    13. A Forgotten Realm
    14. Heill Óðinn, Sire
    15. The Ruins Of Dwarfmount
    16. The Road To Hel
    17. Thulêan Sorcery
    18. Descent Into Niflheimr
    19. Skin Traveller
    20. The Dream Land
    21. Thulêan Mysteries
    22. The Password
    23. The Loss Of Thulê
  8. My thoughts...you can skip them completely. When Trouble dropped Psalm 9  in 1984 and they had a demo in 83 but I have no idea how much of Psalm 9 was on it, if an...lost my train of thought, anyway better Doom albums had come out or about to come out. In the 80s- Trouble put out: Pslam 9 in 1984, The Skull in 85 and Run To The Light in 87. All three of those are in my opinion way better then anything Candlemass put out in the 80s. Who was candle with then...Peaceville or Black Dragon ?

1985 Vitus dropped The Walking Dead with SST Records. It speaks for itself.

Another from 1985 is Black Hole with Blind Men Occult something. Here its worth a click if you want to hear what Ghost was going for on that six inch release Elizabeth.

In 1986, you have Saint Vitus coming out with Born Too Late. Enough said.

now in 1987, Vitus put out an EP Thirsty and Misérables (lol) this one is awful.

Also in 1987 you have Arpia and im not spelling anything else out...De Lusioni this is an Italy thing.

Lets jump right to 1991 with Cathedral and Forest of Equilibrium. Wow ! this album has it all. Great artwork, great tone all around

Candle is good but I think it was just a matter of timing and location for them. You had all the Norway kids cooking up black metal, Peaceville was looking for anything new and heavy. Celtic Frost had just put out To Mega Therion in 85 and in 87 Into Pandemonium. Why not get the band with the singer with Germanic afro ?

Nothing to do with the topic but a fun fact LOL in 1987, in the USA a band called Cutthroat put out an lp with a track titled Hard As Nails... The best Ode to a penis.

How do you feel about more dark ambient/dungeon synth intros?

Natural sounds can really help to set the tone for an album or track, but only if used in the right way.  Samples can easily make a track seem cheap

As I think about it, another good intro is on "Dunkelheit" by Burzum.  The tone in the first few seconds of the song evoke the trumpet on the album cover.

Love the dark D&D synth stuff ! I have been enjoying this new wave of 80s synth as well. A group called Le Cassette has been on my mp3 Walkman for months. I have pinball arcade in town. I like throwing on the headphones, and do the 80s justice.

I enjoy all of Varg's ambient music. He is working on a new lp for his RPG system. Pen and paper nerd or not, I will check it out.

Man the new 80s synthwave is really and interesting movement right now. I love 80s horror, The Thing is my fav and I love that soundtrack- so all of this just hits the spot. If you need something different tonight Try " It Come From The 80s Vol 2" or Alex Emotions, in the 80s palette but more chill. <---Good stuff for sure. Light and easy, nothing deep and doesn't demand your full attention.
