Recently with a friend at work we discussed the question of which books are better to read - professional or fiction. We came to the conclusion that at a certain period of life every book is good, so I started reading Master and Margarita Bulgakov again, and the next one will be Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

My vinyl collection. Not pictured are the 7". My CD's are packed in boxes in the basement, because there's just no room in the apartment.

I have been watching it quite a bit recently.  It took a few episodes to get into the humor, but I have not seen a bad episode yet!

    Another good series: Monk.
An obsessive-compulsive detective solves improbably murders in San Francisco.  It is a comedy, but with a good sense of humor.

Hey everyone, as mentioned in my intro post, I'm a professional visual artist and illustrator as well as a fine arts professor. I do a variety of artwork - some digital illustration, some oil painting, some gouache, some charcoal and graphite drawing, each with varying themes - mostly I stick to fantastical landscapes, but I also work heavily with the figure in a very academic sense.
    Here's some of everything:

Yo, I just checked out your thread and I have to say you have some awesome work as well! I'd love to chat art and illustration with you sometime. I'll definitely try and make a thread for my stuff!
I listened to Rannoch's new album earlier this year based on the cover art alone, so kudos there
Hmm, it's ever-changing, but at the moment the main ones in rotation are Der Weg Einer Freiheit, Deafheaven, Inferi, Visigoth, Stortregn, and Cult of Luna.

Hi everyone, just joined this place as I've been seeking out a forum for metal enthusiasts for quite some time - I've found that forums these days are heavily lacking thanks to Reddit and social media, but I really only use social media to share my artwork and connect with IRL friends and professional contacts, otherwise it's much too shallow for long-form discussion. So hopefully this place can offer some of that!

In real life I'm a professor who teaches visual art. I'm a huge fan of fantasy and golden-age era illustration, as well as the academic painters and the Hudson River Valley School of artists. I'm also inspired by a ton of metal album artists as well - and have made some album artwork myself! Here's some of my artwork as well:

As for metal - I listen to essentially any genre of metal, but my favorites seem to be black metal, post-metal, and death metal. I browse AngryMetalGuy's site and forum as a 100% no-account lurker, but saw this place advertised on the forum during their migration and thought hey, what the hell, maybe try posting here and there. So yeah, excited to check this place out and hopefully contribute some activity!

thanks for the tip balor. tbh id say the same about midsommer murders. john nettles episodes are the best. that's shot in the three counties of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire where i used to work alot. Many episodes featuring lovely countryside and many pubs is my take.hard to believe so many murders happened in such picturesque locations. i take it law and order had that more gritty style, city scenes.

Make sure that it is the original series and not one of the spin-offs (SVU, Criminal Intent).  They are entertaining, but not nearly as good - at least to me.

You need to check out some good Finblack. Totally change your opinion on black metal. A few classics to get you started:
Sargeist - Let the Devil In
Baptism - Morbid Wings of Sathanas (their whole discography is fucking excellent)
    Saturnian Mist - Chaos Magick
    Ordinance - Reliquishment
    Impaled Nazarene - Latex Cult
Satanic Warmaster - Strength and Honor
    Horna - Black Metal Warfare
    Warloghe - Pestilence and Warfare
Behexen - By the Blessing of Satan
    Oath - Mustan Liekin Veljeskunta
Don't get me started on Archgoat, but definitely check them out.
And the granddaddy of all Finblack - Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon (mandatory listening)
Or if you like the more melodic stuff, Sweden is your joint:
Dawn - Slaughtersun (if you don't like this album nothing can help you)
    Dissection of course
    Armagedda - Only True Believers
    Avsky - Scorn
    Svartsyn - ...His Majesty
Or just go listen to Bathory. The Return is a good place to start. Chase that with Blood Fire Death. Quothorn basically invented black metal as we know it (yeah yeah Venom, I know...)
Plenty of other excellent black metal scenes around the world. Germany and Poland are standouts. Don't overlook the French, South America, Greece, or the US either. There is so much variety in black metal it's astonishing. Really something for everyone. I certainly wouldn't recommend basing opinions on Belphegor.

balor surely theres got to be some episodes better than others. ive put you on the spot😁 they cant all be great.      you may well be right about some episodes appealing  more to us audiences.theres always some things that get lost when different countries watch something international

will you tube it. see how i get on.

There are a ton! haha  I can't think of any particular episodes off the top of my head.  They are all good, though there may be a few that are thematically less interesting to people who are not from the US.  Most episodes are self-contained, so just pick whatever sounds interesting!

Not seen the program but ive seen the  cast list. There's some big names on there. It's prob on channel 5 in Uk so will give it a go at some point.
bergerac is sometimes a murder mystery program. so for those episodes ive included it. john nettles did brilliant job imo with this. its set on jersey in the channel Islands so theres always nice scenery. program is very exciting at times which keeps me interested. catchy thene tune too. it's probably bit of a housewife's favourite program but i still like it regardless.

balor yes understanding Heidegger. ok sounds like a challenge.  all that metaphysics stuff including im pretty sure Heidegger was mentioned in the commentary for the matrix films. ken wilbur and cornel west certainly talked up some interesting ideas. obviously ive no idea if there any good but it was interesting hearing about the philosophies of the matrix film's and i definitely appreciated the matrix revolutions film alot more after hearing the commentary.
re the divine comedy. i can recommend that if you like lots of interesting imagery. most interesting part for me was hell section.  as books go its a poem but the translation i had, read more like a novel. definitely worth reading once. definitely i should  read it again

It helped as much as anything can really be said to "help" one read Heidegger.  Heidegger translating the play in a very weird way didn't exactly make it any easier either...
I have not read Dante, but I have wanted to for a long time.  I am sort of wary of poetry just because I am not very familiar with it.  Would you say that it is worth reading?  I'm sure that greater Bible literacy would help one understand it better.
