Balor given a Damn from Natassja in What Are You Listening To?
I have been listening to a lot of music by the bands Black Magick SS, Assassination, and Edelweiss lately.  They all play an interesting mix of keyboard-heavy, psychedelic rock/doom metal with some bm vocals.  I would highly recommend all of them if you are in the mood for something a little different.

Halloween Kills is the sequel to Halloween 2018, which was written as a sequel from the very first Halloween in '78!  Halloween Ends is coming in 2021. The Witch is very good, worth your time watching.

Hey everyone! First of all, my name is Tye. I joined this forum to find some like minded individuals. I mainly listen to death metal, black metal, and Thrash but I do enjoy some Doom and Sludge every now and then. The bands that I've been alternating between lately have been, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Slayer, and Possessed. Other than metal I'm into paranormal, true crime, and other odd things along that nature.
    Chao!

Balor gave a Damn to Requiem in Various Darkthrone Related Stuff
Can't believe I haven't said anything in the Darkthrone thread.
Anyway, what prompted this engagement is the fact that I've just purchased 'The Wind of 666 Black Hearts', which is the Peaceville Records official release of the 'A Blaze in the Northern Sky' and 'Under a Funeral Moon' rehearsal tapes. They're both very full sounding and genuinely worth this official release. I was surprised at the sound quality when I first heard these versions.
It also amazes me that bands like Darkthrone and Mayhem recorded and kept so much material. There is just an unending reservoir of demos, photos, letters etc.
The release also has a very good package with an essay from Fenriz as well as the lyrics for the 'Under the Funeral Moon' material. Of course, we all have the original albums on CD (right... right??), but these versions are really good. They're a little more bass heavy and a little less frostbitten, which gives a new light and weight to the tracks. There are also some excellent photos included that I haven't seen before.
As for Darkthrone at large, I've made my views clear many times on this site, and I don't want to piss people off who are fans of the current material. Suffice to say I left Darkthrone around 1996 and haven't really been able to connect with their Celtic Frost worship/80s era, although I still keep a close eye on them.
For me, I've had some spiritual experiences listening to Darkthrone, including last year when I was in the Tasmanian wilderness listening to 'Under a Funeral Moon' and gazing at a dark sky of a million stars through the trees...
Anyway, here's a shot of my Darkthrone collection which I took today in a flurry of Darkthrone enthusiasm. It's obviously not a huge collection, or in any way complete, but I just realised that I have quite a few things that are worth gathering together for a photo. Apologies for the double-up, as I've posted it in the Collections thread in the Photography sub-thread.
Here is the nekro photo of doom:

Balor gave a Damn to MacabreEternal in The Year In Anything Besides New Releases
Hard to ignore the influence of Borknagar this year.  Might only have been a latter part of 2019 discovery but I dipped right into the discography off the back of The Olden Domain finding some real gems (the last two releases being of particular note.  However, the awkward progressiveness of the sophomore record just haunts me and I find I just keep going back to it.
Next up has to be Nokturnal Mortum Голос сталі, which is one of those records I learn more about with every listen.  Rampant pagan, blackened folk metal at its finest right here.  It is an album that deserves the time you spend with it as it flows effortlessly whilst building a great sense of storytelling at the same time.

Sticking with the folk theme, Arkona also landed on my radar this year with the super-aggressive vocal delivery of Masha in particular being a point of note.  Bouncy as it is blackened at times, Lepta is one of my most played pagan metal records of the year (released 15 years ago).

Balor given a Damn from Requiem in Albums you didn’t like at first but grew to like?
Speaking of Mayhem, it took me a while to like A Grand Declaration of War.  The first several times that I listened to the album, I was totally thrown off by how weird it is.  I listened to it without realizing that it represented a deliberate attempt to reinvent the band's sound, so I had expected it to sound like Chimera.  I have never been a fan of spoken word, and was initially really disappointed by Maniac's vocal delivery.
Now, though, I have grown to like it more than any other Mayhem release, and I think that that was because it was so different from anything they (or any other bm band) have ever done.  It is a work of genius, and such things can often only be recognized for what they are after spending a great deal of time with them.

With Varg, I think you have to be in tune with what is going on with him. He is a very interesting human.
Ulver has a great track intro off the 95 release titled Bergtatt @7:55 mark Here
All the early stuff coming out of and around Scandinavian, just blows my mind. I love the mixing of styles, and genres. The countless demo recordings that sound like some guys threw in some random metal lps in mixer and hoped for the best.

They didn't play it, it was the intro tape. They used it for years and years. But when the lights are down and those first drum beats start in the venue it was infernal ecstasy. An amazing vibe, at least back in 2001.

I agree with this. Great tone, great delivery, great sense of how to put a vocal hook together. Yeah, he's got some cheesy mannerisms, but at least he sounds like himself.
