38.. Somehow ageing doesn´t really give me any sort of anxiety whatsoever, where others really seem to struggle with the concept. It is what it is, make the best of it.. we are meaningless, irrelevant creatures here only for a tiny visit anyway. Enjoy the things you can, Do something with the things you can do something about, and stop worrying about the things you can´t effect. My motto right there.

Saying "oh yes they are" doesn't make it so. Whether you're talking about more aggressive metal/hardcore crossover acts or the pop-inflected polished stuff that people usually mean when they talk about "metalcore" this way, Behemoth doesn't fit the category. They don't have any of those influences. They don't sound like any actual metalcore band I've ever heard. It sounds like you're just using "metalcore" as a catch-all term to mean "lame and commercial"... in which case, I'd kind of agree, I find them to be pretty bland for the most part. But again, just being lame and commercial doesn't make something metalcore.
Also, being lame and argumentative about something this close to meaningless doesn't make you a welcome addition to the board. Hope you enjoy the rest of the internet.

Speaking as a female, I personally dislike most female vocals in metal, maybe because the overwhelming majority tend to front symphonic bands and that's just not my jam. But even something like Arch Enemy just doesn't sit right with me (I mean that could potentially be because I'm not much into melodeath either, but I digress). Deeper voices just sound much better to my ear in this context.
I would love to see a woman kick ass behind a drum kit in a black metal band or some other extreme subgenre, though. That's what I'd like to see.
To shed some light perhaps on the smaller hands argument - I tried to learn bass several years ago, but I have tiny little doll hands so switched to guitar fairly quickly and was amazed at how much easier the guitar was for me to handle because of the smaller frets and shorter, thinner neck. I don't think that's a reason most women in metal tend to be vocalists, but perhaps maybe why there aren't too many female bassists. That being said, even someone with tiny hands like myself could master the bass after building up lots of finger strength (was more of an issue than the width between my fingers but that was also a struggle if I'm being completely honest). I still don't think that's the main reason though. I'm very petite so theoretically anyone - even other women - who have bigger hands than I do (in other words, basically everyone except children younger than 12 or people with physical limitations) wouldn't be struggling as much with the bass as I was. Certainly if I can reach the frets on a guitar, just about anyone can.
I think many women tend to be vocalists - or some metal bands tend to recruit them - is more to do with a specific image or sound they are trying to achieve. Hence why most of them front symphonic bands. Of course there's always the possibility (and there is no doubt in my mind) that some bands want female vocalists as a sort of marketing gimmick ("come see us, we have a hot chick in a corset for you to stare at for an hour!") But symphonic metal and similar subgenres like power metal or folk metal also tend to be more accessible to women because the subject matter itself is more accessible in general - it's not really angry or aggressive and it doesn't delve into seriously deep shit like disillusionment with the world or a sense of isolation from humanity, something that most men probably don't relate to either, but for those that do, they're probably more readily able to embrace it because they won't be immediately dismissed as "crazy" if they do.
As far as women playing metal? I would say that probably comes down to social conditioning. No one is going to have an interest in metal unless they can relate to the subject matter or thematic content, and that tends to be more accessible to men. Girls are still raised to be demure and compliant and to go about our lives with a smile, to be friendly, social creatures, to never express that we're sad or pissed off about anything, to quash any feelings of aggression or rebellion, to be overly concerned with being attractive and feminine so that we can gEt MaRRieD aNd hAvE BaBiEs as the most important goal in our lives and (gasp!) what the average dude might think of us if we don't uphold the feminine ideal, and most women never really break out of that mindset. So for a woman to say "fuck this shit" and pick up a guitar or another instrument and play death metal or whatever instead of whatever their female friends listen to or what music they were taught to like requires quite a different temperament and personality from what has forever been groomed and ingrained by society since birth, as well as perhaps the rejection of any fear of alienation from other women. I can't speak for anyone else but I've always felt like I can relate to men more and I generally feel more comfortable in the company of men because pretty much all of my interests fall squarely in the realm of the traditionally "masculine", so perhaps I'm not the best person to ask about this, as I definitely don't represent the typical woman (whatever the hell that means). These are simply my observations and experiences.

This isn't a debate. You're just offering rhetoric and personal observations to back up your armchair musings and trying to bat down anyone who seems to have a different view. Can't call it a celebration either, the only thing you seem to be celebrating is your own writing.
It's hard to know where to start responding to this thread. It's essentially dishonest. It's not about "women in metal", it's about your opinions and the (limited) role you see for women in metal; and it's not about discussing "reasons" for your unsupported claim that women tend to do vocals rather than play instruments, because you seem to have it all figured out. You're just here to expound. I guess it's kind of clever to say you're interested in a "discussion" of some point, when you're actually taking it as a given and using it to support your other ideas, because it keeps the ball in your court and everyone else on their back foot. It lets you steer things towards the points you want to make. But it doesn't make for a good thread.
I'm not convinced that women in rock and metal do, in fact, statistically tend to be vocalists rather than play instruments; maybe you just think that because you notice them more? Even if that were the case, it's a pretty big jump to claim that it must be due to physical or mental differences between the genders. Of course you don't come right out and say that you think they can't hack it; you say that they "just aren't interested" in those instruments, offer a counterpoint of actual data that doesn't support what you're saying, and then brush it aside with some handwaving about "an Ed Sheeran effect". Now, the "Ed Sheeran effect" is actually about women finding red-haired men more attractive because of Ed Sheeran's popularity, but you're extending it to say it's also the reason why women are buying more guitars lately. The subtext there is that it's all down to sex appeal and marketing, not some organic uptick in female interest in playing music. In other words, women aren't really interested in music, per se, but they might manage to learn how to bang out some tunes thanks to the influence of a popular male cultural figure.
Then we get to the "small hands" bit. This is a howler. If this was true, you'd think women (and men!) with small hands wouldn't take up the bass guitar, or the cello, or the double bass... and yet they do! (On this note, I would invite you to think back about ten or fifteen years to the stereotype that "chicks always play the bass".) You'd think people with larger hands wouldn't play violin, or mandolin, or anything else comparatively tiny and finicky... and yet they do. Guitar's not that big of an instrument. Playing metal is not some massive, Herculean undertaking. And you can't use the fact that women tend to have smaller hands than men, statistically, on average, as evidence for some sharp distinction between the genders. Hand size is a spectrum. There's no bright-line discontinuity. This is a category error on your part.
You lecturing ChainsawAkimbo about "real science" being "based on observation" is extra funny when you haven't offered one bit of real-world data to support what you're saying, aside from a few anecdotes about a handful of musicians within your own sphere of knowledge. Deliberately misunderstanding his point about "cavemen" doesn't do you any favors. And the repeated worries about staying "on topic" are pretty funny too, considering that you said you wanted to "celebrate women in metal" but have yet to mention anything actually positive about any particular female musician, or women's contributions to music in general. Since we're relying on personal anecdotes here, I'd like to share that I personally know a bunch of ripping female musicians - some of whom love and play metal - and I can assure you that in my 27 years of playing music I've seen no evidence of any difference in talent or ability on any instrument that I could attribute to gender. There is no denying that women are underrepresented in rock and metal, but you're way out over your skis.
Now I'm gonna go listen to Anachronism, and maybe some Nachtlieder.

I think the reason that women in metal are mostly associated with vocalists (despite the fact that there are women who do other things in bands) is that vocals are the only area in metal music where women would be noticeably different from men.  I don't think there is any reasonably basis to determine from the sound of a guitar or drums that the musician playing it must be a man or a woman - in fact, musicians of equal skill would be indistinguishable on the basis of gender from simply the sound of their playing.  For vocals, however, a woman would sound different from a man.

ChainsawAkimbo gave a Damn to Requiem in Lords of Chaos Movie (Mayhem Band)
Alright, I bought the DVD, watched it, and here's my take.
Firstly, the actual quality of the filmmaking is really good. It looks fantastic, real, and isn't fake or corny in any way, which was one of my fears. As an actual movie, it's really well done. I'm so pleased that it turned out that way.
But I have some serious misgivings. Here they are.
Firstly, while Rory Culkin was a pretty good Euronymous, despite his googly eyes, I just hated the way that Euro was portrayed. He was weak, uncertain, doubtful and clutching at other people's achievements. There may be a truth to this, but I didn't feel that we had a sense of the massive impact that this guy had, through his letter writing, and more than anything his songwriting. Yes he was human like the rest of us, but his musical vision was squandered in this movie - it was as if he just happened to be floating through events.
This is the guy who sat down with his guitar and wrote 'Freezing Moon', 'Deathcrush' and 'Life Eternal'. The man is a musical genius, and this didn't come across at all. I think it would have been nice if they spent just a couple of minutes worth of screen time showing this side of him. That something really magical was coming out of his guitar and his vision.
Another thing that bothered me was the use of humour. Yes, black metal is funny as hell, but not in the way it was shown in the movie, with people tripping over things and generally being awkward. A movie like this definitely needs its comedic relief, otherwise it's just too heavy, but it didn't work.
Snorre Ruch was a presented as a mentally disabled clown, and maybe he actually is (doubt it), but it came off pretty bad for the guy.. Varg was ok but just lacked any real sense of danger that the actual Varg has and he was too chubby by half. And the Kristian/Varg name joke just went on and on. Maybe Varg was overly insistent that people called him by that name, but surely they wouldn't have kept forgetting this.
Metalion looked amazingly like the real Metalion, with that fat kid playing him. It looked just like the photos, quite incredible. Faust also looked like Faust. It would have been good to have a bit more dialogue with these guys though, as Faust just watched some horror movies and then stabby stabby. Why'd you do it Faust? Horror movies.
Speaking of which, I found it really hard to watch Euronymous's murder scene. Whereas the Dead suicide scene was pretty traumatic, at least he had control over the situation, and yes it was hard to watch, but also very fascinating and engaging. When Varg started stabbing Euro I started to feel really sick, and it was appalling to watch. Seeing a guy get stabbed a heap of times isn't as much fun as I thought it would be. And when Euro is pleading for his life and saying "I'm all talk", it just sucked. He wasn't all talk - he might have said it to try to save his life - but the whole movie suggested he was all talk, so his life felt so deflating and pointless.
And I'll finish with the lack of musical composition. Right now I'm listening to 'Filosofem', and it's amazing. All the music from that period was amazing. Faust playing on 'Nightside', Euro on 'De Mysteriis', the Darkthrone guys (where were they?). Where was Samoth who burnt a church with Varg? I wanted to see these guys.
Great ending though with Euro saying "What have you done lately" or whatever he says. Just a brilliant moment.
But damn, what a hard movie to watch. Not sure I'll watch it again.

And what ever happened to @jonnybagofdonuts? He signs up to the forum, loads up a profile pic, and posts a single link about an interview in a single post, never to be heard of again. What fucked up mystery is behind this I wonder.
