For whether on not I find spirituality through music, it depends on what the song is about. For example, Metallica's "Holier Than Thou" reminds me that I shouldn't judge people, because I also have flaws. I find spirituality in this song, because it represents a Bible verse: "Judge not, lest ye be judged." 

I’m starting to get into reggae a little bit. I started listening when I got the chance to play guitar in a reggae band a few weeks ago. If you like reggae, please list your favorite artists and songs. The main artists I like so far are Bob Marley (One Love/People Get Ready) and Barrington Levy (Black Roses).

Has anyone heard SFU’s new album “Nightmares of the Decomposed”? I’m listening to it now, and it’s not too bad overall. However, I never knew that Yoda sang in a death metal band until now.

I believe while musicians should take their work seriously and really focus on it, that there is a time and place for humor in music. For example, country/folk singer Johnny Cash took his songwriting and recording seriously, yet he was still able to write songs that were humorous to his audience (Cocaine Blues had the line “I thought I was her daddy, but she had five more”, and A Boy Named Sue would make people laugh), and goofy songs such as One Piece At A Time.

So I did a speech on the five main subgenres of heavy metal for my college speech class. What do you guys think about it?
 

I’ve actually just started getting into death metal recently, but my favorite bands are Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy, and Death.

Re: classical? Has anyone tried Stravisky's Rite of Spring? That's pretty awesome, raw, tribal, angry and totally, totally different !

Re: music theory this is true, rapidfire I can already tell I'm going to enjoy talking metal with you, personally I can't stand learning music theory, I'd much rather just go pick up my guitar and play as opposed to sitting there thinking ok what scale am I using now, what key am I in etc. don't get me wrong I can use the various scales quite well I just don't take that approach to my playing

Re: music theory I have briefly studied music theory back when I was in high school, I hated it, I can just sit there and read that stuff, I need to be picking up an instrument and playing for any of it to make sense
