    New Purchases/Acquisitions

Time to retire my beloved Gibson after 21 years of service. This showed up today: Schecter E-1 SLS Elite "Evil Twin". Fucking amazing so far - lighter, clearer-sounding, easier to play, stays in tune like a champ... So happy I was able to pull the trigger on this. I might even like the active pickups!

Arkanum: Kostogher First time actually giving this a proper listen. I liked it a lot - lots of interesting riffs, and the variation in the vocals was cool.

    Hi from Croatia

Thanks! You're right about Crimson Glory and Fates Warning (Parallels is one of my favorite albums, the vocals are hauntingly amazing!). I'll definitely check out the other bands you mentioned. Thank you:) Not anymore. I played the piano as a kid, unfortunately I got distracted somewhere along the way. My dad owns a fender guitar but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to play it. What about you?

There are different variations of the Cyrillic script for different languages, and some different ways of writing individual letters. Balor is correct. It was developed from Greek, and the symbol that looks like a capital "A" without the crossbar is one of the symbols equivalent to our letter "L".

    This is me!

Hi everyone, I'm Ash and I'm a musician, incredibly infatuated with metal music and I regularly write and record music. I joined the forum because none of my social circle share the same passion for metal that I do; and also I'm looking for a vocalist too. My favourite bands are Behemoth, Children of Bodom (earlier albums), Mastodon, Gojira, Avenged Sevenfold, Cannibal Corpse, Sinergy.. And a whole load more! Love me some squiggly wiggly guitar licks, and heavy af riffs too!

Does humour have a place in music?

I can't say I'd heard of either of those bands before, but Fornicator's demo was entitled "She Died on My Dick", come on if that is not intended as humour I don't know what is! The humour comes from the desire to cause maximum offence, I mean my first band was called Coathanger Abortion and we had a song called "Cot Death" and another called "No Tears for dead Queers", none of us were homophobic at all, the title was intended to piss as many people off as possible, thus amusing ourselves... I will say that was 20 years ago now so please don't judge too harshly! I'm gonna get kicked out...

    What Are You Listening To?

Paradise Lost - 'Obsidian' The first three songs are definitely the best, and I'm wondering whether there might not be a touch of filler towards the back end. More listens are required. Loving it so far though.

New Auroch - not bad but predictable New Abysmal Dawn - exactly the same as anything else they have ever done. New Thanatos - meh So far the standouts are Icelandic black metallers Helfró and the atmospheric doom of Frayle. Tomorrow will be NOW 87

    What's on your mind?

We've got a couple of rats (at least) probably lurking within the bowels of Castle Requiem. One or two of them run along the top of a fence, and occasionally we see them, the bold little fukkers. The other night I ran outside after one of them. I ran down the side of the chateau along the fence line, couldn't see it, and boom, it ran right past my head. I fair near shat myself. I've cunningly planted poison, but they still roam today, unaffected, imperious, triumphant. But I'll get them yet. They haven't seen the last of Count Requiem. You mark my words. Oh yes, their time will come.

    Spirituality through music

I know what you mean about metal helping you with a disorder. I have anxiety disorder, I get panic attacks which are so mentally exhausting and painful. I would never take meds I absolutely hate them, but metal really brings you down to earth, gives you something to concentrate on and the lyrics can be so relatable. Spiritually, I have to say for me, Metal gives me more emotion and meaning in my life then any god ever could.

Yeah it's an amazing record. I find that Forgotten Legends comes close though. I just picked up their most recent record A Few Lines in Archaic Ukrainian, I think it does black metal proud. Thanks, I'll check those out.

    Women in metal

I think the reason that women in metal are mostly associated with vocalists (despite the fact that there are women who do other things in bands) is that vocals are the only area in metal music where women would be noticeably different from men. I don't think there is any reasonably basis to determine from the sound of a guitar or drums that the musician playing it must be a man or a woman - in fact, musicians of equal skill would be indistinguishable on the basis of gender from simply the sound of their playing. For vocals, however, a woman would sound different from a man.

I don't use spotify, but I have people in my ear raving about it. One of them posts on this forum... I'm just not up to date with the latest fancy things like this. I buy CDs and consider myself a collector, although I do tend to listen to youtube if I can't be bothered going up to grab the CD out of the collection. The thought of actually having a paid thing on my phone to listen to things is anathema to me. Still, it's clearly useful, and I'm thinking about it. I'm still somewhat resentful of the concept that we can listen to nearly everything that has ever been released without actually owning it. I know this isn't just the way of the future, but the way of the present, but damn I just don't know about it.
