    What Are You Listening To?

Every once in a while, I'll throw an entire genre from my Sonos server into a queue. It's not an accurate reflection of everything I have because Sonos takes the genre tagged from whatever music program you use. I still use iTunes which allows me to change the genre if I feel like it when I download CDs, but I usually don't bother, and typically downloads from Bandcamp or given to me from friends doesn't get a genre at all. So, there's quite a bit missing. Here's what I'm listening to now before I go kayaking with the weather in the 50's, about 12 Celsius air temps but a chilly upper 40's F in the water-so you need cold weather gear for sure. Random metal genre shuffle (band/album/one track each): Cathedral/Ethereal Mirror Corrosion of Conformity/In the Arms of God Edge of Sanity/Purgatory Afterglow-good one! The Atlas Moth/Comma Noir-meh-kind of interesting to see what comes up that I would not be inclined to listen to anymore Cirith Ungol/Forever Black Sword/Apocryphon Sinister/Cross the Styx/Diabolical Summoning (set) Autopsy/Severed Survival Holy Moses/Strength, power, Will, Passion Grave/Endless Procession of Souls Jungle Rot/Kill on Command-always enjoyed this meat and taters offering Grave/Into the Grave Bloodbath Resurrection Through Carnage Now off for some boatin'

  2. Obituary - Dying of Everything, this ain't no Cause of Death, Slowly We Rot or World Demise, but it's so much better than their last piece of crap album which imo is better off forgotten. I'd say these good ole boys from Florida have redeemed themseles with this groovy, foot-stompin', neck-snappin' slab of mainstream death. I might even consider grabbing this. Master - The Witch Hunt, 2022, Chicagoland by way of Czechia. Another legacy band, for whatever reason I just like these guys. Nothing spectacular here, just more of the same I guess, but still it's solid and enjoyable thrashy death metal as always.

    What's on your mind?

Interestingly, my 18 year old niece who is very woke (to the point of being irritating at times) was totally opposed to the edits to the Roald Dahl books.

  4. This sucks. I don't know any other more gentle, kind or empathetic way to break it to you. I don't think this hot take has anything at all to do with my personal goat filth sensiblities either, I'm certain that 99.99% of music lovers of any and all varieties would tell you this shit sucks. I hear there are guitars being 'played' (or being bashed or smashed or banged on or shat on or kicked or whatever method they use to get them to emit noise) and there's lots of feedback 'n stuff, but there's no riffs or anything musical happening here. If you like it you like it, no justification neccessary, whatever floats your boat, "you do you" as they say. But surely you boys can understand that everything with guitars isn't neccessarily metal, and clearly this is not metal. This (like Swans) would be considered experimental noise rock. So glad I could clear that misconception up for youse. And the reason you can't hear the American Doc is because they're Canadians. More specifically hailing from Montreal, a bi-lingual city a mere 5.5 hours from me by car where they speak more French than they do English. NP: Coroner - R.I.P. Switzerland 1987. Someone posted this the other day and I have been meaning to play it ever since then. Now this is metal, hear the difference?

  6. I've never heard of Big Brave before but I suppose I'll have to take a quick listen now because you boys have got me intrigued. AC/DC - If You Want Blood You´ve Got It, 1978. Doc finally managed to get the AC/DC cassette out of his Beemer's tape player with a butter knife after it'd been stuck in there for a few weeks, and now he's lent it to me. Just kidding, I know Doc wouldn't be caught dead with a cassette tape on him, much less something as pedestrian as AC/DC. I don't actually have this live album, I'm just listening on Youtube. Motörhead - No Sleep Til Hammersmith, 1981. I really don't mess with live albums very often, but there are a few 'classics' I consider pretty decent. This was the first Motörhead album I ever bought/heard when it was a new release. I had only read about the band up until this point. They quickly became my #1 favorite band and I had picked up all 4 of their previous albums (everything except On Parole) within a month or two. Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous, 1978. Might as well do this one next. You know I just now realized that more than half of the members of these 3 bands' classic lineups are all fucking dead now. Fuck me I'm old.

    What Are You Listening To?

Thanks for hipping me. I like Big/Brave, didn't know they had a new one out. You're right, not goat approved but for Swansian inspired noise/drone/post metal this is good. I just read they were following up on a collaboration with The Body which helped the band delve into Americana. I don't really hear the Americana on first listen. Robin Waitte is a unique vocalist. Some apparently think she sounds like Bjork and maybe there's a tonal similarity but she really doesn't sound like Bjork to me. She shares similarities to other female doom vocalists in that her vocals are "clean" but say compared to everyone's favorite siren Sara from Messa, Waiite's vocals, like Sara make the band but are far less smooth/soothing, Waiite is raw, edgy, urgent, warbley even like someone teetering on the edge of her emotions, barely hanging on. I don't think of B/B as metal but it's hard to classify them as anything else I suppose. They are always a compelling listen. Glad they are finding their own little niche.
