At the speeds they're skating net result is they hit a lot harder than rugby, even with the paddng they're bruised all to hell. Same with US football, at the speeds these behemoths are moving they couldn't even have a 16 game season without the pads, they'd all be in the fucking hospital. Not taking anything away from rugby, as Kukey said it's just a more civilized contact sport. Seems Americans aren't happy unless they see black eyes, blood, broken bones and concussions.

It's essentially soccer on ice with fisticuffs encouraged because soccer without fisticuffs is way too fucking boring to watch. I don't watch hockey because the puck is so damn small I can't pick up where it is on TV. Going to a game is much better though, I've enjoyed the handful of Rangers games I've been to. Main problem I have is that hockey season coincides with basketball season and I couldn't possibly follow two sports at the same time especially when NY has 2 basketball teams and 3 hockey teams. So I watch basketball. The finals are happening this week, Boston vs San Francisco. Just 2 or 3 games to go and then I'll get a little break until football season starts in late August. Baseball runs from April to October but that's too fucking boring to watch 162 games of dudes spitting, striking out and scratching their balls so I just ignore baseball.

Isn't ice hockey just an excuse for 20 odd blokes to go out beat the shit out of each other? There is no game is there?

I'm sure we are all whingers at some time especially with sports, but having watched SOO for twenty odd years with no favourite team I've just witness more coming from Sydney based fans. But to be fair the forums I am talking about are not sports forums and the Sydney people do spend a lot of the time whinging about everything other states do, forum nerds probably are not a fair representation of Sydneysiders in general.

Qualification for being a good commentator probably is being able to talk with your head in a bucket of water and a mouth full of marbles, but there is a difference between talk and waffle. They all waffle from time to time but being able to keep an audience interested and talking for so long takes a good story teller. No one can send the world to sleep like Mark Taylor!! Taylor has been doing commercials for air conditioners here in OZ for decades. It could be the middle of summer, sweltering heat, the humidity is up around 100% and the floor tiles are sweating then Mark Taylor comes on TV and tries to sell an air conditioner. It should be an easy sell, but instead he's so boring you can't help but nod off during the ad. I doubt anyone gets to the end of the ad and actually knows what company he's selling for, let alone if the box he's pointing at does anything.
