  1. I have a complicated relationship with dissonant metal. I had trouble getting into Destroyers. My brain wasn't ready to process the complexity or something even though I'm a pretty big DSO fan. After the Hoopla and accolades of Shrines of Paralysis , I really worked at cracking their code you know, and to be fair it was a tad more accessible. I think I get them now. TBH, they don't really sound like death metal to me but something that exists in it's own unique metals space. The new one is really good! The Ives recording I picked up based on NRP's guide to classical CD collection . The reviewer says Thomas is one of our best Ivesians in the mold of Bernstein....as a modernist neophyte, figured that's good enough for me. It's a 4 disc comp that I've just cracked open. Ives M.O. seems to be to defy convention and include a little bit of everything in his work. Disc 1 features his 1st symphony, an early work while studying music at Yale and is very much in the mold of traditional Romantic classcical and symphony 4 is a later more well known work and is extremely experimental and demanding for an ochetra. It's surprisingly acessible and has moments of beauty among the wierdness-but it all makes sense to my ears so far.
