  4. As I said in the intro thread of yours influence doesn't inform genre and the confusion of genre is not strictly reserved for casual fans. For example Metallum does list Venom as a heavy metal band primarily and not a black metal band primarily. Calling yourself something does not make you that thing. I.e bands calling themselves battle metal are not because it isn't a thing. Anyway this is stemming into an entirely different conversation.

  5. I think it's because those people are coming from a Facebook advertising campaign and once they create and account they think their in/ that's it. Somehow I need to figure out how to pull them into conversations after they populate their profile. That's turned off now so you should be good. Only real introduction topics will be visible. I was trialing it but he was getting a bit much... Need to rethink how we engage the new wave.

    What is Metal music?

Oh man, I love Tommy Immoi. He's great. I love it how we are getting all these posts about "what is such and such". Alright, I'll give it a shot: Metal is heavy guitar-based music of varying tempos and styles that, regardless of its sub-style, presents a relatively high impact aural experience founded in an abnormally high power-to-note quotient in relation to all or most musical components.

  7. just wondering if anyone here is interested in anime and manga, and if so which ones, bear in mind I'm not talking about the little kid crap here by the way personally I don't like most of what I've read or seen, at this point it's pretty much only Death Note and trinity Blood, also when I'm watching it I hate watching anything that has english subtitles, I prefer the dubbed versions unless the voice work sucks then I can put up with the subtitles

  8. I previously relied on the 'Unread Content' button a lot to find recent posts that I haven't read. Unfortunately it looks like every person who joins the forums now has a post - possibly the automatic template that you were talking about the other day. This is clogging up the 'Unread Content' info, as when I head there now it's just full of rockcandy79 says: 'Hi I'm new to the forum'. Is there any way I can block the posts from the Introduction forum in order to stop them appearing in my Unread Content? I had a play around and couldn't find anything. Either that, or just shut off those phony posts. 98% of people who join this forum never post, so I don't see the point of forcing a conversation. Anyway, could you please bring back my precious (authentic) Unread Posts! Furthermore, Taffy68, PaulKBCFC96, Slayergirl37, Mrtor1975, Chizer666, Chanichatty2017, kisa75, Darksoul33 have - among many others - apparently joined the forum in the last 24 hours. @MacabreEternal and @FatherAlabaster have even said hello to them. I don't think they've ever received a response. Are these real people? Surely not. Is this part of your zany mad-scientist test? Or is something more sinister at work here...?

  13. Man, I first heard the phrase "bouncing off the walls" during a church service in Houston when I was about 11 or something and it was all I could do not to issue a resonant guffaw through the sanctuary. The mental image of a toddler just rocketing about a bedroom like a squash ball turned out surprisingly evocative, something of the Calvin and Hobbes to it.

One guy on Facebook used the phrase "slugfuck pacing" which certainly gave me a chuckle. Definitely gotta integrate that one into my vocabulary.

  15. If we're going for originators then Death and Black metal lists are kind of wrong. Possessed are missing from death metal and ought to sit in place of Carcass (ps grindcore/goregrind until Heartwork just sayin'. I am a genre nazi). Also Venom, Mercyful Fate, Bathory, and Celtic Frost would be the forerunners of black metal. Now then MY area of expertise. The big 4 of doom metal would be: Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, and Trouble. At least if we want originators.

  16. I think it was from Miasma. The vocals are pure deathcore mate and the melodic approach is too. Just hammering out a couple of chords making a melody doesn't make you melodeath. Nor do influences bear any significance on your genre. Mayhem were influenced by Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, and Bathory yet their black metal sound is nothing like those bands. To me melodeath is more like

I've been playing guitar since 1991, but I don't consider myself in any way accomplished. I dabble with bass, but more as a necessity than anything (I'm a rudimentary follower of the guitar in that fashion). I growl, if the voice is to be considered an instrument (which, it is), but wish I could sing clean (I sound like a dying sea-lion).

  18. All day long the answer to this question will be Bolt Thrower. They were the first death metal band I ever heard (back in 1990, I think) and, as such, hold a special place for me.

  19. I don't think it can. In some way, I don't like the idea of boiling creativity down to a formula. That's how you end up with commercial-grade music.

  20. Haha.. This is what i am called everywhere else pretty much.. When i registered here i took the name of a 2 man project we had in the past, since i figured i am going to use it for my future personal projects too. It just felt wrong, since it used to be something more than me alone. It has kinda bothered me since registering so i figured finally to ask help sorting it.

  23. You develop a working knowledge of every music venue that plays metal between Shrewsbury and Berlin and I'll learn about some venues as distant as the Central Coast. See, this is the problem with Australia - you have a million great places between Shrewsbury and Berlin, and what do I have between Melbourne and the Central Coast? Sydney?? *shudders*.

  25. Had to check for a second to make sure I was thinking of the right band. Yes, I was, TBDM are deathcore/melodic deathcore as best I can tell. Really not much tying them to melodic death metal in my opinion. Melodeath is more like early Arch Enemy, early Dark Tranquillity, early At The Gates, Enforsaken etc. A case could be made for Anata as well at a stretch. I do apologise if it seems like I'm coming down hard on a band you dig. No issue with you liking them or anything I'm just kind of venting.

  36. I couldn't bring myself to write up tasting notes for all of these interesting, fresh, subtle, unique, well-made beers, especially since I was up until 4AM drinking them. Train ride through a rainy New England autumn day with Opeth's "Orchid" on headphones was a great way to recuperate this afternoon.

  38. The King Is Blind - "We Are The Parasite, We Are The Cancer" - yes there's a review of this in the blog section for anyone who hasn't yet seen it TKIB so I won't go on here. Needless to say I am loving this and am very excited for future releases from these boys. Ozzy Osbourne - "The Ultimate Sin" - the streaming subscription I have picked up recently has helped me to explore some quite obvious albums that have either never had the chance to pick up or simply ones that I wanted to rediscover. This is in the latter category having been a CD I once had (long lost) and it represents the pinnacle of Jake E Lee's contribution to the Osbourne discography. Some turkeys on here yes but in the main still very entertaining. Anthrax "State of Euphoria" - never heard this until last weekend and although it isn't on a par with say "Spreading The Disease" or "Among The Living" it made for great train journey music. Definitely changed my opinion on Anthrax for positive ends after struggling for years to get on with Belladonna's vocals I am now a fan.

Try a solo project! You'll always find someone to collaborate. How I used to do it with guys in Poland was You get your allocated time do whatever, it's your time no distractions and you do it your way Send the stems, or if you share the same DAW, send the project file, named, versions all that - clean it 1st before send Then it's their turn to have their allocated time to do whatever they want You get on Skype, chat, talk over the vision and then Rinse Repeat And go back to bullet 1 until you have a collaborative project Many people do that, nothing like playing with others but can get you into writing music until you find someone/people who'll dedicate their time and effort to practice! Just a thought.

Re: anime/manga I was an anime fan before I got into metal, and can still watch some of it occasionally, though not to the degree I once did. The only one I still have a large attraction to is Neon Genesis Evangelion, easily the best anime I've ever seen, and I still try to watch the series and movies every couple of years.

  46. Re: intro to prog All RIGHT! Anyhow, I think I'm just going to give you a list and elaborate only a bit...It'll take eons if I try to give you a good impression of the band or album in question. I'll try to answer your questions on these bands if you want some more in-depth description. I recommend: 'The Weight Of The World' by 7days. This features my favorite guitarist Markus Sigfridsson and famed Candlemass vocalist Thomas Vikstrom on lead vocals; one of my favorite albums. 'Final Extension' by Andromeda. This is a reissue of their first album, but with their current singer who I think is better. Brainstorm overall. I have 'Liquid Monster' but people say that's one of their weaker albums. Otherwise, a pretty crunchy approach. Don't get their latest stuff, it's somewhat bland. 'Metus Mortis' and 'Soul Temptation' get good reviews. Circle II Circle overall. They use some of Savatage's talent and have a strongly guitar-based approach and great vocals. Circus Maximus overall. They have some great material on their two albums. 'Where Stories End' by Darkwater. This album is better than their first in my opinion; its melodies are more accessible and the guitar is better. Independent Harmony by Division By Zero. Their other album is also good, but this one showcases their awesome mix of thundering technical riffs better. Dominici overall. Good prog all around. 5th Season by Dreamscape. It's got a lot of long songs, but good and VERY underrated. Definitely a band which deserves more publicity. In Search Of Truth by Evergrey. This band really got to sucking recently, but their early stuff is good. Check out the song 'Watching The Skies'. MAD riff on that sucker! 'Memoirs Of A Broken Man' by Futures End. I think it's their only album, but it's great, very aggressive stuff while retaining clean vocals. 'Pulse For A Graveheart' by Mind Key. I discovered this recently, it's very good prog with a lot of passion behind it. Myrath overall. O yes, how I love this band. It's groovy, technical Arabic prog. What more do you need to hear? Nevermore overall. I like 'This Godless Endeavor' but they have a LOT of great stuff. The guitars are awesome here. Definitely one of my favorite prog bands. Orphaned Land overall. They combine complex arrangements with Hebrew instruments and prog. Pathosray's self-titled debut. Their songs have multiple passages, strong instrumentation and an overall aggressiveness and passion. 'Scent Of Snow' ranks up there as one of the best prog songs I've ever heard. Random Eyes overall. Yeah, their new album is called 'Light Up'. No, it's not about weed. Yes, it's pink. No, it's not horrible. These guys are a mixed bag; I like their album 'Invisible' the best but their other stuff is fine too. Redmption overall. They are the BEST prog band I've ever heard. Scar Symmetry overall. They haven't got one really strong album, but a lot of good material. 'Holographic Universe' is probably their best-loved album. 'Mercy Falls' by Seventh Wonder. Great Swedish prog and one of my favorite prog albums. Imaginary Sonicscape by Sigh. This is technically black metal, but the musicianship is great. Weird stuff and great for being strange. 'Aeons Past' by Solution .45. This is good progressive death metal with clean vocals. I know some people hate this band but I think they're good. 'When Time Fades' by Suspyre. This band has strong classical influences and a wide variety in their music. Definitely check them out for something interesting. 'Iconoclast' by Symphony X. This album features their crunchiest stuff, I think. Very aggressive, but it allows the keyboards to enjoy a bit more time in the limelight, putting it a bit ahead of 'Paradise Lost'. Threshold overall. They were the first prog band I discovered and remain one of my favorites. Sadly, their vocalist Andrew MacDermott died so we won't get to hear him again...try to find the material where he sings. 'Long Way Home' remains to this day my favorite song. Tomorrow's Eve overall. This German band is pretty underrated, but they're very good, nice and crunchy with good keyboards and drums as well. 'Reality' by Wingdom. This is good prog with wonderful keyboard melodies. And two Australian bands! 'The Fourth Season' by Vanishing Point. This band has good vocals and great atmosphere. Voyager overall. Look at their more recent stuff...I don't like their old work although others do. Their vocalist is quite exceptional, one of the best. Their overall sense of melody is great. Eeesh. Well, now my back hurts. Check these bands out!
