Any one is worth your time I promise. This list is basically just Doom/Death and Death Metal but prime examples of each style.

Re: Top 10 Albums of Any Given Decade Excellent idea for a thread, but I think explanation for each album as to why a poster included it would be interesting. I suppose I'm just used to Metal-Archives where discussion is alive and well. As for myself, I won't be as quick to put a list together because it would take some serious thought. I find these things tough, especially ranking beacuse of the sheer number of albums that are released every year. And some years have a number of excellent records.

I've been going over mine for a few days now starting back from 1980 going forward. I'll eventually start working on a 1970's and up but I have a lot to listen to first. As far as the reasons for why I put the bands where they are, it's mostly based on if I think they were a great album or not. Sometimes I'm biased but over all I try to be objective.

Re: Top 10 Albums of Any Given Decade

Shouldn't the title of this thread then be "Top 10 Albums of Any Given Year"? Based on your thread title' date=' I thought this would be something like "The best 10 albums from 1980-1989", but that would be a much more difficult undertaking.[/quote'] Perhaps. Regardless you must participate!

Re: Top 10 Albums of Any Given Decade

How strange, of all the Maiden albums I just listened to No Prayer for the Dying today (Mother Russia is my favourite Maiden song 8-) ! I'll have a go at best albums of the noughties (in no particular order): 1: Iron Maiden - Brave New World 2: Leaves' Eyes - Vinland Saga 3: Leaves' Eyes - Njord 4: Epica - The Divine Conspiracy 5: Disturbed - Indestructible 6: Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake (there, I bet that surprised you! ;) ) 7: Trivium - The Crusade 8: Nightwish - Century Child 9: Slipknot - All Hope is Gone 10: Within Temptation - The Heart of Everything
Since The Metal Advisor asks our reasons, hear's my list again :D ! 1: I choose Iron Maiden's Brave New World because I love the effortless rollicking and ever so faintly whimsical journeys they take me on. Also, the solos are divine and Bruce's voice soars over the choruses. Best songs: Ghost of the Navigator and The Nomad. 2: Leaves' Eyes Vinland Saga. I don't think that there has ever been a metal album so magical, transporting me into a deep and beautiful world of Norse myth. Best songs: Farewell Proud Men, Amhran and Twilight Sun. 3. More Leaves' Eyes but comletely different with Njord, still highly Norse, but hard edged, warriors and gods tales with the old folkier song, all driving beats and cruching, snearing chords and riffs with Liv's voice soaring over the lot! Best songs: My Destiny, Scarborough Fair and Froya's Theme. 4. Epica's Divine Conspiracy for breathtaking ambition. The use of Orchestral insturments is pushed to its absolute limits, while highly philosphical lyrics and Simone Simon's fantastic and versatile voice make this a class album. The riffing on both guitars and keyboards is pretty exemplary too! Best songs: The Obsessive Devotion, Menace of Vanity and Chasing the Dragon. 5. Disturbed's Indestructible. Well, I just love this album, it's tight riffs with David Draiman's raspy yet melodic voice add real punch to this fast, aggresive scream of an album. Best songs: Indestructible, Criminal and Facade. 6. (Whew this is hard work  ) Lamb of God's Ashes of the Wake. This just simply is the most skull-crushing album I own, tightly controlled white fury that screams and growls to me over sneering riffs. Terrific! Best songs: Laid to Rest and Hourglass. 7. Trivium's Crusade. I chose this because I love the songs. They are really fast and aggressive with plenty of inventive riffs yet they also flow wonderfully. Best songs: Ignition and To the Rats. 8. Century Child by Nightwish. Man I love this album, so dark, so meaningful, so philosophical! I have to confess though that the End of All Hope inspires completely the wrong emotion in me - it gives me hope and the will to resist! Best songs: End of All Hope, Slaying the Dreamer and Forever Yours. 9. (Am I still banging on?) Slipknot's All Hope is Gone. Oh dear, this I bet is the least popular of the albums I picked but I love it for it's wild, wild playing, which somehow always seems in control. Spitting riffs, frenzied progressions and insane solos make this (for me only!) a must have album! Best songs: Gematria, Sulfur and Snuff. 10. The Heart of Everything by Within Temptation. Wow, what a range to this album - it's simply impossible to pin down but it's all so good! Sharon's range and pathos are exceptional, I bet she could out-high Mariah Carey or the late Whitney Houston! Best songs: The Howling, Hand of Sorrow and Final Destination. Wow, that took some time but I hope that it was somehow worth it!

Re: Top 10 Albums of Any Given Year I guess I'll take NTNR's lead and start in the 90's. BlutAusNerd's Top 10 Albums of 1990: Atrocity: Hallucinations - One of the first tech/death albums, killer and unique Bathory: Hammerheart - First viking metal album, huge atmosphere and entrancing mood Deicide: Deicide - Deicide's most savage and memorable, total hate filled brutality Merciless: The Awakening - Absolutely destructive Swedish death/thrash, ripping greatness Nuclear Death: Bride of Insect - Sick noisy death/grind, a monument of disgusting insanity Obituary: Cause of Death - Dark, heavy, and catchy, Obituary's best Paradise Lost: Lost Paradise - One of the first doom/death album, amazing creepy atmosphere and rough heaviness Pungent Stench: For God Your Soul... For Me Your Flesh - Morbid, sick, and fucking fun death metal classic Trouble: Trouble - Pretty much the best stoner/doom album ever, one of Trouble's best Entombed: Left Hand Path - Classic Swedish death metal, best guitar tone EVER and one of the best death metal songs ever in the title track In no particular order, I had to make some tough cuts to even get down to 10, so I won't be organizing it. Mostly a death metal year for me, I guess... EDIT: Included a brief explanation for each as suggested by The Metal Adviser, I like the idea of an explanation, especially for albums others haven't heard.

Well, why not try to go into detail about why? That would be especially useful for those that haven't heard the records because a listing thread really doesn't do much. I see a few posters have gone into some detail. I'll have to read 'em. :)

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
