Same here! Riffs are repeated too many times, Harris's basslines are not what they used to be as well as his song-writting. Only song that stands strong for me is Speed of Light.

I love repeated riffs, but yes, some of those just went on and on. And on and on. It was weird. It's a weird album.

I don't get how Somewhere in Time is regarded as their best by so many people. The first track is really killer but most of the other songs are let down by the choruses. It's an album of terrible choruses. Heaven Can Wait is a cool live song and Deja-Vu has got good energy going but this one really isn't my favorite.

I do like all the songs on Piece of Mind though. Even Sun and Steel I think is kickass.

I really enjoy No Prayer For the Dying but Mother Russia is such a drag. This album has got some really unique songwriting, especially for maiden. I haven't heard another band play like this at all.
The two last songs are really bland but everything up to that point is raunchy, punch in the face, hose-swinging confidence. The guitar solos are incredible on this record.

Then the band took a turn for the worse on the Fear of the Dark album. This one's got a lot of fillers but some people may be into the 90s sound. It's not terrible but lots of filler. Standouts would be Judas Be My Guide (wow), title track and perhaps Afraid To Shoot Strangers but I don't like this record much.

Re: IRON MAIDEN Paul or Bruce or Blaze?

1)imo bruce is there best singer. my take is such power and dramatic style with theatrical elements to his singing work super great and is great match for the music.

2)paul dianno. in some ways hes better than bruce Dickinson, its sort of grittier style of singing which imo i like bit more,. overall imo his singing doesn't suit maiden as much as Dickinson. i think paul is a really good singer. am i mad in thinking his voice would suit a classic hard rock band amazingly well. i promise not been on the 🥃🥃🥃🥃😂

3)blaze- never heard much of blaze tbh. i heard good things about his solo career but not heard it

I look at it as 2 different bands. I like both. I'm glad we have both. Most of the time I listen to the first Bruce era stuff (Number - SSOASS). I liked Brave New World too. IMO, Maiden wouldn't be as big as they are with Paul. The first 2 albums are great, but he can't do what Bruce does.

My personal list:

1) Piece of Mind

2) SSOASS

3) Number of the Beast

4) Killers

5) Powerslave

6) Iron Maiden

7) Somewhere in Time

Favorite song: The Prisoner off Number of the Beast

Best cover art: SSOASS

As I'm sure you expected once again I'm the outlier here. I hate Dickenson's theatrical vox comparatively speaking and although I tolerated them 40 years ago because my heavy metal options were so severely limited back then, the 3 albums I have that he was featured on aren't ones that I ever reach for here in the new millennium. I can do three or four songs at most then I'm off listening to something else. As Navy said I have to think of Paul's Maiden and Brucie's Maiden as two different bands and I prefer the first one hands down. I've never heard any of the albums that came after Powerslave so I can't comment on the Blaze stuff either.

I kinda think of Maiden as that plain Jane chick you hooked up with at the club late one night when you were young because you were horny and you didn't have a whole lot of other options at that point in time. And so then you proceeded to have a little fling with her for a few months because she was kinda fun and easy and had a hot little body. But then you stopped calling her after awhile when you had gone to some more places and met some new women and realized you could do a lot better.

Favorite Maiden tracks: Drifter and Wrathchild

Favorite Dickenson era tracks: Revelations and Hallowed.

Haven't they rescheduled yet?

They might be a bit a late for scheduling November if they haven't yet There is already a few international artists (nothing that interesting), here between October and December, they might struggle to get a venue.

Back in 2020 they mentioned November 2022 for rescheduled Australia date.

I checked their website and all European and America's dates are up and they go up to 27 October.  So my thinking is they will either do Asia-Pacific in November (preferable) or 2023 (not preferable).

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
